Title: Riddick Matte Painting
Name: Dylan Cole
Country: United States
Software: Photoshop

Here is a matte painting I did of the planet Crematoria for the Chronicles of Riddick. This shot started in real tight just below the main spire and then pulled back to reveal the landscape. It was a challenge to paint a volcano made out of obsidian. The reason the plume curves around in a weird way is that in the next shot we see them running in falling ash.
Here is a detail of this painting-

The art/CG/design team did a great job on Cronicles of Riddick, exspecially Crematoria looked great.
Does anyone happen to know if it was the same team that did Pitch Black?

*mumbels* if only the story and the acting of the movie was as good as the art :( *mumbels*

Clouds/smoke are really cool. Are they painted or rendered or used from some photography?

I'm very impressed with the amount of detail in objects like your smoke clouds. Although I personally didn't enjoy Riddick as much as I thought I would ... The CG in it was very impressive. (M still more a Pitch black fan) :( Your light attention to color details and depth impresses me a lot. I hope to get better at this kinda stuff T_T

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the kind welcome.

J.K.Makowka-There were 3 major effects houses on the film and the main one, Double Negative, was the same as Pitch Black. It had the same vfx supervisor, Peter Chiang, as well.

Artie-The smoke plumes are a bit of photography and a bit of painting. I tried to start with photos to have the nice realism and texture and then I did a lot of paiting over it to make it work for the shot.

Thanks again.

I have to say that Riddick was a so lala movie story wise but what really REALLY impressed me and was awesome to watch were the concept and the settings.

At least I know now why they did look great. They sure had amazing artist working on the matte and concept art.

Amazing work :)

Amazing work! Allways a joy watching your matte paintings because of all the detail and realism you put in them. I'm a great fan of your, cause you real know how to paint these huge epic scenes.
I also liked your volcano matte in return of the king very much.

I'm very interested in knowing the stats to these pieces.

For example: how much time is given to you for one bg image in the movie?

Second: What is the dpi size for these files?

Third: What is the average pixel size of the canvas?

Nomad

Same as danimation2001 I will be interested by those details, also maybe you can post a small "making of" of this great image?

Awesome work

Just amazing! Have to say that real star of Riddik is You!
Without these mattings the movie would never have reached the limit for me to watch it. Sure, story doopy, actor was ok, animations was quite good... but the scenery was excellent!

Are you doing work for the sequels? That will really decide if I'll see it on the screen or rent on DVD.

Thanks again, everyone. Very kind.
For those asking about the particulars-
This image was 8192 pixels wide. It was this wide because we start very tight on the image and pull out. I did it in about a week. The working PSD file had over 100 layers, not so much that it is impressive, just that I am that obsessive.

Nomad- Sorry, I can't do a making of, I don't have the time or the rights.

CreativeTNT- Thanks a lot, I think the sequels depend on how well the dvd's do. If they make enough moneu then the sequels will happen. I think it would be fun to work on, but it is a long ways away.

Best,

Dylan

Those running pullback shots were incredible, best parts of the film together with 3d work on invasion sequence imho.

Great job on all paintings, each environment is interesting in its own way and very well done,

Is exsanguinatus (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=103453) THE Dylan Cole? If you are, dude, I am your biggest fan, you're a celebrity in my book. I've been out of the whole illustration scene for so long after starting a career building web pages about 10 years ago, real booorrinng compared to what everyones doing here.

I just ordered the Matte Painting Landscape dvd. Chronicles of Riddick is one of my favorite movies of all time, don't know if it was for the plot or the unimaginable landscape scenaries. Either way, your art has completely made me want to make a 90 degree turn in my career and give matte painting a try. If not for a career doing so, just to create illustrations for myself.

I've always been a traditional oil painter doing portraits and landscapes as well as 3d modeling and some animation, so hopefully this is a natural progression.

INKY2 put it best for me too, how pity it is that I just discovered matte painting only just yesterday. I went out and bought and Wacom Intuous2 tablet lastnight and can't wait to get started this weekend.

I still can't believe the scenaries from my two favorite movies were paintings.

You've definately pushed this medium to the limits my friend.
