View Full Version : Vehicle: Transforming Robot - Macross2 VF-2SS
T0BER 08-24-2002, 11:39 AM Transferred from the 'Work in Progress' section.
This is a VF-2SS fron the Japanese series 'Macross 2'.
Maya 4.0 NURBS model. Photoshop 6.0 for texturing.
I'm going to do a small animation of the transformation as well, but for now I would like any critiques or comments on these.

Very very nice! I'm no expert on the Macross series, but they look very good and as if they could move around and transform as they should. Looking forward to the animations!

Kudos to you Tober.
Great to see another Macross fan down under! The story to Macross II sucked, but the mecha design are awesome. When do you expect to have the animation done?

Really like the work you've done ! one thing I noticed is that possibly the elbo joints are off scale they look slightly thin to me but everything looks great. Awesome job! So are thinking about doing some more? What would the animation entail, just the transformation? Well Done!!

WOW! Thanks everyone :)
There is a transformation animation sequence for all three modes.
urgaffel - Thanks. That is the most twisted avatar I've ever seen! Well done.
wille - Yeah, I don't like allot of the green myself, might have to go for a darker grey. I'll try for a composited render of a small animation.
organic, vizion, Bjolletts - Thanks, much appreciated.
Trevor - Thanks. Yeah, the story was pretty underdeveloped, but the VFs were awesome. Animation in at least two weeks. I have some freelance work starting tomorrow to keep me busy (and fed).
WillJohn - Thanks. The look I wanted for the model involved corrosion and atmospheric re-entry burning. In that mode those shiny black sections are concealed, but you're right, I'll cut down on the shininess there.
derwolpertinger - Thanks, I'll post some screen pictures soon for reference.
meloncully - Thanks. Maya isn't that great for toon shading, but I have pulled it off before, but not on such a complex model, so... maybe... Wireframe tomorrow, but it's a NURBS model.
boxcrash - Thanks. Robotech is what got me into Macross and my start as a traditional animator. So many memories...
aesthitic - Thanks. Go for it dude! Let me know if you want any reference pictures. The file will go public as a LW file in the not too distant future.
KirkBjerk - Thanks. Haven't thought much about it really. I'm not looking to model another mech any time soon though. Animation might be a practice strike from above upon dummy targets of something. (There's a sequence like that in 'Macross Plus').
Deepray - Thanks, vivid imagination.
hhmaya - Thanks, maybe in about 3 weeks.
say-g - Thanks. You mean a slider set-up? Not yet. Otherwise yes, the transformations are smooth.

is this for a game?

hmm.. i'd say turn on cel ink lines..
your texturing is good for cel work.. but you don't
have cel edges.
Add the cel edges.. and then take a look at your work. you'll be amazed how well it translates into actual cel. just don't make your ink lines too heavy.
also if you'd like to see some lw animations of this mecha.
check out
rich mortons stuff that he did a couple years back.

It should still be on his demo reel.

I'm not a fan of the Macross-universe but, this model pretty amazing! :buttrock:
How long did you work on that?

meloncully - Thanks again. I actually used a technique very similar to that just recently for a job. I'm glad to see I did it the right way after all. Toon shading through Maya is an absolute pain. It usually requires three passes at varying resolutions to get a result which then needs post-processing. :(
bi0hazard - Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
peterpro - Thanks. It is not for a game (... yet ;) ). I will look into achieving a toon look in a few weeks. I saw that reel a while ago on MacrossWorld.com, funny stuff.
Fabian - Thanks. The modeling was about 8 to 12 days of work; the texturing took way more time than I'm currently prepared to admit to. This started about a year ago to learn NURBS modeling in Maya and has been very much on and off since between holidays, work and other pet projects. I really have no accurate time frames for this.

Jak Outbreak wanted me to ask you if you'r plannig on buying the robotech game that comes out in november ? :)

I don't own a current generation console. When I see 'Robotech: Battlecry' running I might buy one. The screenshots and movies I've seen are looking very promising though; great use of cell shading.

Cool. I like that kit. I had a few of the small ones when I was growing up.
I also had the Alpha Veritech fighter, the Invid Suit(the purple suit with claws), Two Scott Bernards with the motorcycle(mospeeda??), and many more.
But one thing, because I could not find the Veritech fighters around at the age I was, I think 5th grade, I bought Jetfire, who was actualy a Robotech Veritech instead of the Jetfire who was on the show, which rocked and I was vey happy then, for 27$.
:)
It would transform into all the modes including Gerwalk and even had the little dimples in his Turbine intakes on the hip/leg area for that spring loaded ball joint thingy...ah yes the memories here as well. :scream: :)

The model is great the texture so far is really good...
You need to add more detail..If you put the no step. danger,caution...etc....Stuff like that on the mech would make it more real... If you buy a model kit for Macross you can see all the extra stuff they put on there plane's...I think that would make it really sweet..

Thanks. You're right, it needs a bit more color detail like that.
