View Full Version : Experimental Scripts?
Puffin 08-24-2002, 06:48 AM There are some scripts in the max5\scripts\MAXScriptTools dir that have a read me stating that they are experimental. Anyone have any info on these such as what they do. I tried looking through the documentation but couldn't find any reference to them at all.

Why not just run them and see what happens? The worst thing that can happen is for Max to crash;)

3ds max 4 macroscripts could delete files, as far as I know. Actually, I only saw this in on a script that come with Meshtools 2.5, that deletes the older meshtools files for clean install. But I would trust it since I have never seen a malicious max sript :D

Yes, scripts can delete files. But it is doubtful that Discreet would ship Max with scripts that would do harm in such a way. Had Puffin not (basically) stated that the scripts were from the Max5 installation, I might not have suggested that crashing was the worst thing that could happen.

Here is the deal:
A large part of the UI and some features in max 5 are script-based. These scripts are located in StdPlugs/StdScripts and UI/Macroscripts.
ANY other scripts shipping with max are work in progress by beta-testers and discreet developers who have provided them as-is and with no waranty. While these scripts have been tested to work with the shipping version of max, they haven't passed full Quality Engineering tests (which means testing them in heavy usage and in combination with many other scripts and features). This means they are unsupported and discreet does not carry any responsibility should they break something. That's why the readme usually says "Use at your own risk".
This is the reason I usually don't provide that many scripts for the shipping version and prefer a "living" version on my site that can be updated anytime. There are ALWAYS bugs, and I don't want them burnt on CD for the future generations ;)

Shhhht! Quiet! :)
Don't provide ideas for the idiots...
The reason there are no malicious maxscripts is because there are too few maxscript users out there and most of them are all around nice guys ;) Not because it isn't technically possible...
