View Full Version : Smooth/Unsmooth question...
Technofreak 08-24-2002, 06:15 AM ok ...ive made a hotkey to smooth in maya
that ..instead selecting the faces after ..it goes back into object mode
polyPerformAction "polySmooth -dv 1 -c 1 -kb 1 -ksb 1 -kt 1" f 0;
changeSelectMode -object;
updateSelectionModeIcons;
im not a coder or anything tho....what im looking for is a way to 'unsmooth' this and stick it on a hotkey or button..whatever
well i hope the solution is somewhat related to the smooth
part of it :)
this would help me judge my poly models much faster than using smooth button and always undoing ...like sometimes id want to keep it smoothed and select it later on and unsmooth just as easily rather than going into the attributes and doing it somewhat
manually...kind of the way xsi does it with geo. aprox.
i hope its possible hehe...
any thoughts welcome

The only way I know of to do an unsmooth at a later time would be to select the object/ look at the construction history, in the channel box/ find "polysmooth3 (ex.)"/ select it and delete it. You will not be able to unsmooth after you delete the construction history, unless you undo. If you want to have a smoothness that is easier to do and undo, start using the CPS poly tools, available at HighEnd3D.com
Hope that helps.

yes i know about the construction history..that is
what i meant by unsmoothing it manually, its kinda laborious
there must be a way to code that and make it into a hotkey
or button.....well...atleast i hope to
ive heard some bad stuff about the cps poly tools so im
leaving that alone for now

The CPS tools are a little strange to use at first, but they are just all construction history based from what I can tell. You wont be able to get the results you want right away with them probably. I also heard the stories, but they seem to work very well with v 4.0 and 4.5 now. I dont have any complaints about them anymore. It cant hurt to try.
As to the unsmooth MEL scripting, you can try the sticky MEL thread located here, maybe one of the guys here can help you.
That one is tougher than I can help you with.

yes CPS is probably the best way to switch unsmooth, smooth, and allows you to tweak the low poly cage while seeing the smoothed version at the same time.
I still like XSI for this though. all you have to do is hit the - and + to switch inbetween the levels
CPS isnt that bad, if you understand Maya well you should be able to solve any wierdness that CPS does.
Some things ive noticed. The low poly cage gets all its render checkmarks turned off so after a clear history you have to go turn those back on.
Using CPS on on more than one object messes up your layers which is mildly irritating but i can live with it

The best thing to do is never model more than one object in a scene at a time. That is of course, when you use CPS. If you keep your workflow in a correct hiearchy, this will never be a problem, as you import and export stuff into your scenes. Keeping your workflow clean and properly grouped, it will enable you to scale obj's up or down depending on the needs when you import them into new scenes.

I had no problem using CPS on multiple objects. The layers worked fine.
I'm using the 3.0 version I think, not the latest beta version. Maybe that's it?
