View Full Version : share your texturing brushes
Garma 11-12-2004, 11:03 AM hi all,
what brushes do you use for texturing your objects after you have drawn them? I mean things like trees, grass, rusted metal, etc. Do you use hand made brushes or any pre-existing brushes from the painter library? In case of the latter please tell me where I can find them.
please share them with us, it's bothering me for a while now. I didn't find any appropriate brushes yet. Note that I'm not looking for texturing brushes for 3d objects, just brushes to texture objects you have just drawn (in case there is a difference).
thanks!

hi all,

Hi,
In Painter, we don't have to wait until the painting is finished to add texture (though you can if you want to). We can paint with brush variants that interact with the currently selected Paper right from the beginning. We can use Papers that come with Painter or Papers we create for specific purposes.
I mean things like trees, grass, rusted metal, etc.
If you're referring to the texture of tree bark, that could be painted in a number of ways. For instance, using a Pattern Pen variant and an appropriate Pattern, or using a brush variant that interacts with an appropriate Paper texture, or by simply painting the tree bark from scratch.
Grass, could be simulated in several ways, among them:
Using an appropriate Paper texture with a brush variant that interacts with Paper texture (possibly the least effective method if you want the grass to look like grass "up close" in detail),
Painted using the Image Hose and a grass Nozzle,
Painted using a Pattern Pens variant with a grass Pattern, or
Painted with a Captured Dab custom brush variant that paints blades of grass with slightly varying angles, sizes, and color variation. For a Captured Dab variant, the brush dab shape is based on an image, in this case a blade of grass or a grouping of blades of grass.
As with the others you mentioned, rusted metal could also be simulated in a number of ways:
Painting from scratch,
Using a rusted metal Pattern to fill or paint with a Pattern Pens variant,
Painting the base colors, then adding texture using an appropriate Paper and a brush variant that interacts with Paper texture.
Do you use hand made brushes or any pre-existing brushes from the painter library? In case of the latter please tell me where I can find them.
Painter artists use brush variants that come with Painter and custom brush variants they create for special effects, often several of both kinds to complete a single image.
please share them with us,
You'll find a lot of custom brushes to download on both my PixelAlley Site (http://www.pixelalley.com/pixelalley-sections-pages.html) and at Sandman's Site (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david.gell/Pages/Sandmans_Download.html) .

Sounds like you need to spend some serious time reading the Painter User Guide or Help > Help Topics for your Painter version. Below are important chapters to read for Painter IX, Painter 8, and Painter 7:
Painter IX Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > then read the following chapters, all of which relate in one way or another to applying texture to your paintings/images and when you read them, you'll be miles ahead in other areas of using Painter as well:
• Textures, Patterns, and Weaves
• Painting
• Watercolor
• Liquid Ink
• Impasto
• Customizing Brushes
• Image Effects
• Image Hose
Painter 8 Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > then read the following chapters:
• Using Textures, Patterns, and Weaves
• Painting
• Using Water Color
• Using Liquid Ink
• Impasto
• Using the Brush Creator
• Using Image Effects
• The Image Hose
Painter 7 Help > Help Topics > Contents tab > then read the following chapters:
• Painting
• Applying Art Materials
• Using Image Effects
• Customizing Brushes
• The Image Hose
• Impasto
• Using Media Layers
Note that I'm not looking for texturing brushes for 3d objects, just brushes to texture objects you have just drawn (in case there is a difference).
thanks! Since Painter is a 2D program, it doesn't matter if you're painting on a 3D render or painting on any other image.. or doing a painting from scratch. What matters is the result you want.
To give you another boost, read this thread at Sijun Forums' Digital Discussion forum where I wrote a general overview of Paper textures in Painter and provided some demo images:
digital painting video tutorials request (http://digital%20painting%20video%20tutorials%20request%3C/a%3E%3C/b%3E%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%20%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%20Please%20do%20take%20time%20to%20read%20the%20chapters%20listed%20above.%20Then%20spend%20more%20time%20experimenting%20with%20Painter%27s%20brush%20variants%20and%20brush%20controls,%20on%20a%20large%20white%20Canvas%20opened%20just%20for%20this%20purpose.%20You%27ll%20be%20glad%20you%20did%21%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%20%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%20%3Cbr%20/%3E)
Please do take time to read the chapters listed above. Then spend more time experimenting with Painter's brush variants and brush controls, on a large white Canvas opened just for this purpose. You'll be glad you did!

no thanks I know that, but I definately did not mean the process of creating textures for models. I mean I can draw a forest in a bird view but drawing every tree is quite stupid imho, so I was looking for some artistic brushes that helped me with that.
That's a long read Jinbrown, thank you so much, i'm definately going to check out all the sources you handed to me.

Garma,
Yes, it is a long read, and it'll be worth the time you spend.
Read it again, since I was editing the message while you posted yours.
Also, if you don't want to paint your trees, check out what's available on the DigArts Site (http://www.gardenhose.com) .
Dennis has some great trees, branches, grasses, and other things available and you can see some demo's and tutorials to find out what they look like and how they work.
