As far as character animation goes, I've found Keith Lango's tutorials - http://www.keithlango.com/ - pretty invaluable. Start with his pose-to-pose one, and go from there.
In checking the url, I see that he has several new ones up - Can't wait to check them out!
Also, Jeff Lew has an animation dvd - http://www.jefflew.com/ - that's well worth the money.
These are good starting points, but the real key is practice, practice, practice...
Oh, and the Animator's Workbook - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0823002292/qid=1100461615/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/002-8106122-3504851?v=glance&s=books&n=507846 - is also a necessity. It's at my side constantly, referred to for timing, walk cycles, etc...
