View Full Version : Procedural roots/threads
Taoizm 12-17-2001, 06:58 PM Anyone have a good recipe for procedurally growing objects. something akin to tree roots, or thick threads. It might go through several revisions and I was hoping to "grow" it rather than hand model.

Not really procedural - but for a quick fix for "roots", dl CSPolyTools and use the "loft face" option to loft the faces of a poly object along a crude spline and then meshsmooth the monkey! :D

After doing a bunch of homework I found out a good way to achieve what I wanted.
I found this nice little L-system breeder on the net. Use it to breed a shape that works, and copy the coding for it. (So glad I didn't have to learn a new code system)
L-Breeder (http://pixie.oum.ox.ac.uk/L-Breeder/)
Then go into MAX, and load up Blur's L-system plugin. Make the default shape, and then enter the edt mode. Now copy paste the coding from the L-breeder proggie into the MAX floater, and voila you're own...fractal thing. Grows and everything. Too cool. :D

Thought you guy's might enjoi this. I did this quick test (25 min from L-breeder to the quick DOF in photoshop) just to see what kind of results I could get with this technique in a short amount of time. It's really a cool thing cause you can get WAYYY more detailed. I just wasn't goin fot that (I'm gonna do that on the next one).

That was a total score with L-Breeder. I wonder why discreet or blur for that matter doesn't have anything like this already built into max.
Bet you guys cant guess where I got the layout for the scene ;)

I'm glad that someone is getting use out of L-breeder. L-systems are pretty fun once you start getting the hang of them.
