Rui Padinha has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=5193)

Latest Update: Modeling: Head_Detailing_Neck
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/5193/5193_1104638250_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/5193/5193_1104638250_large.jpg)

Just another WIP with detail added to the chin and neck areas...

I am thinking of making a closeup of a character in the foreground which is the main reason behind all the detail work... er... ok, ok! Really, I'm just
having too much fun with it!!!

Thanks for your encouragement and feedback evryone, hope to have the complete model soon!

Hi Everyone

Glad to be here!

I have been keeping up with the great stuff you've been posting. Seems the creative juices are really flowing on this one. Let's see what I can fetch out of my bag of tricks :)

Ok,so here we go...

This thing I'm planning to do is based on an image I started to do a while ago just for fun, but never got to finish.

I'm a huuuge fan of H.P.Lovecraft and his view on the whole sci-fi terror genre. Tales like "the lurker on the treshold" still send shivers down my spine...

I also love the way his descriptions of the "cosmic gulfs" get my imagination going on the look of the actual stuff that might lurk behind the stars...

So here it goes... my first attempt, which I called "Cosmic Gaze".

Rui_Padinha

http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/5193/5193_1100256867_medium.jpg (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/5193/5193_1100256867_large.jpg)

Now, this "Cosmic Gaze" kept bothering me because I wasn't truly satisfied with it and wanted to do something with more depth...

It's no coincidence that I'm also an avid "Hellboy" fan, and personally think that Mik Mignola's artful renders of jellyfish-like entities roaming trough the blackness of space really nails the Lovecraftian feel.

So when I saw the "Space Opera" challenge I tought that I could somehow revisit the Cosmic Gaze motif and throw some jellies in the middle just for fun!

But the image had to be both Iconic and representative of some conflict or civilazational turning point... so, this is what came up.

I'm also working on the story... be with you soon!

Very cool idea. I like your concepts, they have a very "grand" feeling to them. What's the story? :)

Rui_Padinha
11-14-2004, 08:34 PM
Thanks guys!

As for the story, I've been giving it some tought for a while now...

I always loved the stories that leave enough space open for you to fill in the blanks yourself. These were always the most gratifying for me... just enough information to get my imagination going.

Ok, so trying to live up to that tradition, here it goes:

From the void came the end
descending trough cosmic gulfs
of unfathomable madness
dark seed of Chaos, world ender
to put out creation's flame

But as the dying flame bytes
at the hand that puts it out
so did the Elder race rise up
defiantly from the deeps

Courage forged from despair
held up by the strenght of faith
one heart, one will ascending
riding great leviathans of light

Praised be the fallen Lords of old
for the blossoms of their valour
bloom now troughout the spheres
and the echoes of their might
resonate in us still

And that, as they say, is that. The rest is up to you to figure out for yourselves...

Airborn, just checked out your thread... your sketches are truly vibrant and full of colour!
And Joana, you're mushrooms look so good I could eat them :)

This is the design I'm currently working on for the characters on this piece.

I went amphibian because these are widely referred to in Lovecraft's work, and I kind of think they'll go along pretty good with the jellies
motif ...

I've been working on this jellyfish model based on real life references...

Nothing really special about the modelling techniques. Just poly modelling, a lot of hard work and fine tuning and, of course... meshsmooth.

This is a non meshsmoothed version of the model...

I decided to start the 3D endeavour by tackling the jellyfish model right away, mainly because I tought it to be the most challenging part of the piece.

Actually it was a lot easier than I had expected, thanks to Max's great set of modelling tools and the simmetry modifier...

For the foldings on the legs I actually modelled them separatelly and then used the "bridge" function to connect them to the leg geometry.

Of course this implies some planning, but it's really a time saver in the end...

Hi Paulo!

Thanks for your words man! I'm really having a lot of fun with this :bounce:

I'm currently handling the jellyfish shaders and will be posting some test renders pretty soon...
These challenges are truly awesome to participate in, and checking other people's work is always a great inspiration!

As for the Software... 3DSMax! I've been using it for a while now and I'm at a point where I'm getting pretty confortable with it...

Fica bem! Depois quer ver essas texturas... :)

Rui_Padinha
11-23-2004, 03:37 PM
Thanks everyone for your feedback and motivation!

Azazel: I'm planning on saving the "awe" part for the eye part of the piece... if everything goes along well it will have the same feeling as the pic I made earlier, and then some...
It should be scary and loathsome but at the same time retain a certain fascination about it.

KennyM: You bet! I already saw 4 or 5 threads with jellies as the main idea. Seems like it's really a popular motif. Either that or our collective subconscious is strangely connected...mmm...:curious:

linvon
11-23-2004, 04:25 PM
I love what you are doing! I was looking at jellyfish as inspiration also, so what do you think inspired all of us to go in that direction? I have always felt they had a musical quality, but you have use them in an interesting harder way, more weapon like.

I very curious about how the Jellys will look like.
Good luck.

Rui_Padinha
11-23-2004, 05:22 PM
Linvon: I think the jellyfish is a somewhat ambiguous being... it's of our world but has this truly alien and timeless feel to it. for me it embodies primeval beauty and grace... something that was lit up a long time ago when there was nothing but darkness in the deep.

Also the suggestive power of a jellyfish swimming (flying...) trough a sea of pitch black is immense! A conscience lit amidst the void, life's spark conquering the emptyness of non-existence, you name it... it speaks to us on a very personal level.

I also find them extremely musical, but like music it can switch moods eh? :)

Cláudio: Thanks mate, and likewise :)
I wish there would be even more of us (I know a few reluctant ones btw...).
let's see how this turns out for the "Portuguese Team" ehn?

I like your jelly fish creature. Is it a creature or a mechanical monster?
Because if is a mechanical monster it will be cool to see trough it's body all the machinerie.
just a thought.
looking very nice.
good luck.

Rui_Padinha
11-23-2004, 06:59 PM
Canche: It will be 100% organic. Actually I'll try to stick very close to a real jellyfish with a harness on top for the warriors to ride in...

As for the showing trough, yup, there will certainly be some... I'll try to model and shade something remotely similar to a jellyfishe's organs, hopefully I'll pull it off :)

First of all I really want to thank everyone for your feedback and words of encouragement. This is my first challenge and I do think I'll become a regular...

That said, here are some test pics of the jellyfish shader. Still a loooong way to go, but getting there one noise map at a time...

Ok people! Here is the updated version of the jellyfish shader...

I'm pretty happy with the overall look and fake translucency, altough the colors might change in the future depending on the scene pallete...

This shot has the light hitting the jellyfish head on, so I could check how the "lit" part of the shader works...

Just added some organs and filaments, which aren't final, and the jellyfish isn't posed yet, so it still has that "stiff" artificial look...

The good news is that it didn't give as much as trouble as I was expecting, and it's 100% procedural, so I can tweak it in a flash!

Quite a difference from the previous version of the shader... what do you guys think?

Hi, man!

Just stopped by to say you are still the master of all things organic and icky, both shading and modeling-wise...
And I have to admit, I like the overall feel of your jellyfish-riding-tribe-attacks-giant-planetside-looming-demonic-eye, especially because of the whole reproductive sperm-trying-to-fertilize-egg underlying image...
Just kidding ;) You know how much I appreciate all your work, man.
And this is no exception...

BTW, you should correct your Cosmix link, as you forgot the ".com" before the "/"
People might start questioning the existence of our little short movie... :)

Hello Rui, nice modeling work in that eye!
Are you sure about those textures? I think it's too much "rocky"!
I like the idea of the double iris, at least that is how I "see" it... what if it was a blind eye?!
I'm anxious for more friend.

DrFx

Olá Rui, o teu trabalho tá um espectáculo!

I just have to comment on the Shader for the eye and the wrinkled surface of the planet: First, I think the surface of the planet is a bit too shiny, which can be a bit misleading concerning the scale of the thing. Larger organic surfaces tend to be duller at some distance because of all the imperfections, even if they are shiny from a short distance( think of the Sea from satellite or aerial pictures). Also, a "planet" without an atmosphere would be pretty scarred and worn out (e.g. the Moon).

The last "octopus-style" eye you posted has pretty strong texturing, which overrides the shading of the shape, thus losing some depth. Refer to your own inicial sketch, in which the eye was darker and there was a reflective highlight which gave the eye its glossiness.

The modelling and texturing are great, keep up the good work!

Boa sorte!
Carlos

Must complete... the eye commands...

Thanks for your crits!

Cláudio: I think the skin is better now, I was getting the "rocky" feedback from a lot of people here at work, and I wasn't too proud of it myself...thanks for thr tip mate!

DrFx:I really appreciate your comments, they are really insightful and thorough. I was considering some of those things along the way, especially the wet skin issue... the thing is, if I make it too dull the image will loose some appeal... I'll keep trying to find a reasonable balance.

As for the scars, I'm still thinking about doing something along those lines. Of course, being a living organism, the tissues would regenerate to a point...

Pheew... so much to do, so little time!

Thanks again everyone, and keep them coming!

..dasssss....Tá lindo, man!

Goddamn, your eye looks fantastic now. Great improvement! Perfect. And the way the eye seems to be looking sideways as if searching for something works beautifully. I think you've got something quite original here since you are playing with textures that seem believable, but which don't really have a parallel in nature. I'm quite curious as to how the integration in the whole image will look like.

You've exceeded yourself...Keep 'em comin'!

still some tweaking to do, but since there isn't much time left I'll just get started on the body and refine it all later...

Just couldn't help myself! Here's a little test done with mental ray's fast skin shader...

It's pretty cost effective in terms of speed\results. Only setback is that I've been having somewhat of a hard time trying to get the light to spread evenly across the surface...

You may notice hard edged shadows defining the head volumes which isn't such a great thing. Hopefuly I'll come to understand how the shader works and come up with a solution for this...

Cheers everyone!

Very impressive render, I luv how smooth your model is coming along, especially with the results you have got with Mental Ray. Will you be creating any additional textures or additions for the head?

SllepingLion: Hi mate! Thanks for the comments :)

I will create some textures patterns for the whole character... Initially I was planning on painting them, but as time is drawing short I'll think I'll go procedural on it. Maybe vertex paint and dirt for color variation along the surface and noises and cellulars for the skin...
The head will also have some more features, like tiny earholes and a reworked forehead... right now I'm struggling with the torso. Who thought rib cage modelling could be so hard!!!:argh:

Shiela_G: I am sorry to disappoint you Shiela, but chances are he won't be green anymore... I'm thinking sharkskin right now, but I'm still not sure...mmmm... (truth is I have no idea whatsoever but just can't admit it...)

Oh, and a wonderful, wonderful new year to everyone! Seize the moment and live it to the fullest before it disappears!

hi again Rui,

I'm not disapointed. Well, it's just the GSO rule. But, I think "green aliens" is not a problem...it is... if it is superimposed in your final image...i don't know. Anyway very clean modeling, I wish I could do that! Sharks skin would be great...waiting for that! Keep up!

Cheers!

Olá, Rui! Tá muito fixe a cabeça!
That head is really cool! It looks a bit like a (really ugly) fish, so the guy probably has marine ancestors, like the jellyfish? I hope it comes out really slimy and disgusting! Great modelling, but the wireframe got me thinking that you could crease the inside of the wrinkles some more, they are too smooth, I think! I like the vein bumps in the cheeks, maybe add some more?
Looking really cool, you got to put out some more work more frequently!
Cheers!

Thanks for your incredible feedback and support guys!

But alas... I wasn't able to finish the picture in time, too much work in my hands right now
However, this was an unvaluable experience for me, both in terms of interacting with the community (and seeing some amazing stuff I might say) and personal technical and artistic growth.

I have to delve deeper into the realm of anatomy If I want to bring my characters up to the degree of realism I envision... This was a great experience and has taught me that reference work and in depth study of certain areas must always be taken into consideration...

Unfortunately, there was simply not time enough for me to do all of these things at this point...

But I'll keep working o this image once I get some free time, I'm planning on moving it to the WIP forum and be able to share it's development with all of you

Sorry I couldn't keep up to some of your works as well, the things that I've seen from most of you, above all, show a tremendous potential for growth and a firm dedication to your art... keep it up and best of luck for the voting! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

See you all soon

Ok, I guess you won, now I'm the only Portuguese here, dam! :)

Now, serious... I'm so sad you didn't make it, you were going so well!
It was great to share this experience with you.

I saw your "Cosmix" on "Elemental", :) and I've seen the movie too! Excellente work Rui.

Hope to see you next time! Fica bem.
