I created a HDR image ( extension .hdr ), and I'm using it in Maya6.

I placed the hdr image into both the ambient color, and incandescent areas. However, the scene comes out really dark. ( The map is placed onto a sphere in the scene )

If I use a tif version of the same map, in the same spots, I get much better lighting.
Am I using the hdr file incorrectly????
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance
Peter
p.s. I'm rendering with mentalray.

What did you created the HDR image in, HDR shop? Try checking to see if the file looks what it should look like, you need a floating point image viewer, try downloading something like Cinepaint, it can read HDR files, and its free too.

Also, are you using the image on a ball in the scene? This wont be causing the error with the brightness, but its best from Maya 5.01 onwards to use the image based lighting option. Its more efficient in terms of rendering/memory, and also, with spheres, even with primary visibility turned off, in sometimes messes with alpha channels on transparent object in the scene with Maya/Mental Ray.

Cheers,
Dan.

hi

try a number like 2 or 3 for the color gain ( Ambient Color --> Color Balance --> Color Gain )

by double clicking on it and adjusting the Value, you'll see that 1 is by defalut , change it to somethin higher
