I have read every word of the referance guide. I wouldn't post unless I did. just looking for some reference on settings, and some proven workflows. maybe some time savers and simple tips.

Try the "new features tutorials" that ship with the software, they're pretty good at giving you an idea of how to get a scene up and running with the new lighting and rendering features of Max R5.
I really don't see how you could be having troubles though if you read the manuals thoroughly though, its all in there as clear as night and day.

the last three chapters in the tutorial section cover all the new features in max5 - quite straight forward ?!?

I may sound really stupid but I dont get how to change the values of reflectance and transmitance for the materials in radiosity solutions...... I already pressed f1 .....

dont you have to add an 'advanced material override' material over the top (leaving your existing material as a sub-material) AFAIH thats where those settings are. Dont expect the readouts of your materials reflectance & transmittance percentages to work at the top of the material etidor - apparently it isnt hooked up yet.
