View Full Version : Simple Max 7 Normal Bump Mapping Problem

Hi all,

I tried out the normal mapping tool in Max 7 for the first time today. I created a simple shape and cloned it. I named one LP (low poly 88 faces) and HP (high poly 140 faces). I selected HP and created a number of small extrusions for normal bump mapping. I laid out the UV's for the LP and HP with the UVW unwrap modifier.

I followed the instructions in the Max tutorial on normal mapping. All seemed to go as planned but when I rendered the final image I got this,

What could I be doing wrong here? I've seen other people showing good normal mapping results so I'm sure I'm missing something silly :)

All replies are appreciated!

Search the help file for the topic Troubleshooting Normal Maps; that looks like something that's listed.

Thanks John,

The faces were overlapping (Mental Ray issue). The render of the LP looks better but it just looks like standard bump mapping has been applied. The render of the HP looks more defined. Is normal mapping just regular bump mapping if you only bake the bump? I want to make those awesome normal maps seen in Doom 3. :)

does your low poly have UVs laid out? both low poly meshes need the same UV (because its using a texture).
