View Full Version : Render Lighting
I always see renders were the material gets reflection and has a white light on it like the image below, my question is how are you all doing that. Is it GI with a grid as a light and the material is getting the reflection of it. is it FG with a white grid to grab that white. maybe someone can run me by it. Im just about readdy to model something now and get a render done. im using XSI

I'm using Maya, but it should be something close to this. I use Mental Ray area lights and then there is a check box that says "Make Visible" under the mental ray attributes of the actual light.
Then you just scale your area light along the X or Y axis into a long rectangle (it starts off as a square).
Render with GI (and FG if you want to) and you should get that look, as long as your object is rounded and organic looking - adjust your reflection weight to that it doesn't get overblown on the object.
Good luck

That image looks like mostly a reflection - getting the environment map and reflectivity right is 90% of what you see, and the diffuse and specular from light sources are a small secondary part of the shading - it would be good to use FG for that kind of project, though!
