I'd say the biggest difference is that Darktree is an external app that you use to build procedurals that are than hosted inside the 3D software via the Symbiont plugin. To change the procedural you have to launch Darktree which means going back and forht between two apps. With visual Textures you are working completely within Lightwave, you get instant feedback. Seems to work well with Fprime which is a great asset for building procedurals interactively. It's also more affordable than Darktree.

Beside what said bloontz, one other big difference is the integration with Lightwave:

- You can use Lightwave textures as VisualTexture components
- When you change a texture, LW is immediately updated and for example, if you have the VIPER window open of FPrime, you will see in real time the changes.
- VisualTexture can be uses not only as a texture, and a shader but also as a pixel filter, therefore you can make post effects.
- You can use Lightwave graph editor with/without expressions to control VisualTexture

VisualTexture have also feature Darktree do not have, for example a "Variations" window which allows to browse the effect of choosen parameters.

What about blending between surfaces, through the help of a weightmaps perhaps? Does this plugin provide some alternative to LWs ability to do that?

Used as a procedural texture we have unfortunately not directly access to weightmaps. But you can use LW gradients for that.

Beside that, you can mix textures without problem with any other component, even time based. If you want I can setup an example for you.

Can you use both VisualTexture and LW's built-in layer-based texture editor on the same surface? Or is it an either/or situation?

You can use both without troubles. Normaly VisualTexture is seen as any other LW procedural texture, that means you add a procedural layer in LW and then open the VisualTexture editor. So already here you could mix LW layers and have only VisualTexture somewhere in the stack. But if you want you can also add, inside VisualTexture, a component called "LW Texture" which basicaly open another LW texture editor, and allows to incorporate LW textures WITHIN VisualTexture.
