View Full Version : Dual Display Question
Pretorian 11-10-2004, 02:35 AM Hi!
I'm using two monitors with two diferent video cards, one AGP and one PCI. I would like to know wich is the right or best way to use After Effects with two displays.
And, I tried to put all windows from After Effects in the second display and only use the comp in the main display, seems it doesn't work. Project window and time line doesn't go to the second display, all other windows (tools, time control, etc..) goes to the second display, project and time line doesn't. Any idea why? This thing happens with Premiere Pro too. Is this a bug from the applications or it's because I'm using two diferent video cards instead of a dual head?
With Photoshop and Combustion it's working well!
How can I fix this?
Thanks!!!

Make sure the application window is not fully maximized on the first monitor. If the floating pallets are able to be dragged over to the second monitor, then so should the application window. The only thing that would hold it back is if it were fully maximized on one monitor.
As for me, I also run a dual setup, but, my card has two outputs.

Thanks on reply!!
Yeah, now seems it has worked!! But, usually, how people use After Effects with two displays? I mean, what they have in the first display and what in the second? Or, maybe you, what you use in the main display, wich windows/options and what in the second?
Thanks!!

Excellent... glad to hear it works now. As far as what goes in monitor 2, well, that boils down to personal preference. I like to keep my timeline in the main monitor. It drives me crazy to have a "split" in the timeline. All my floating pallets go to the second monitor -- render queue, effect controls, etc. The only pallets I keep on the main monitor are the tools and time controls pallets. I like to keep these in close proximity to the comp window.
I have attached a screen shot of my setup. I had to reduce the resolution and quality of the grab just to get it under the file size limit for the forum. My second monitor starts to the right of the timeline.

Ok im having a problem as well. I have 6800gt running two monitors and I cant get AE over on monitor 2. I did what Serif has said and not maximized AE in the first window. I am able to drag the tools and Info/Audio shelves out to #2(I could do this when AE was maximized as well) but I cant drag things like color difference keyer. This is really annoying. I tried setting my displays to span and dragging the left side of AE across but it just moves completely over to #2. I tried this under dual screen mode too and it still jumps across too #2 as well. Anyone know whats going on?? Its ver. 6.0 by the way.

Do you mean, with the app "windowed", that you can not expand (by dragging) the side of the app window to another monitor? Remember, info and audio shelves can be dragged off the main app window. The effects window and a lot of other windows can not be taken off the main window. If you look at my screen grab, the only reason why I am able to drag the effects pallet and other windows to monitor two is because I have the main window stretch across both monitors. Don't try to move the entire app window, but instead, pull and resize it to fit both monitors.

Hi Serif!!
Sorry, I only could answer your reply now. Thanks a lot for the screen shot!! That makes things easier to understand.
By the way, do you know something about roto in After Effect?
Thanks!!!

Sure... I don't roto on a regular basis, but I do know a little something about it. I bought the Total Training for AE 6.0 set from Total Training... so I can always fall back on those DVD's if I get stumped. I might even fall back on them to answer your question.
Fire away...

Well, I don't have "exactly a question". it's more like... I would like to learn how roto works in After Effects. How it is made, how you make the changes in the movie, etc... Can you explain me that? :)
Thanks for all help!!

Ok I figured it out. It was the "enable window spanning across multiple displays" in nview properties, it wasnt checked. Thanks Serif for your reply.
