i love the new lights and the speed hit dosent seem to be that big compared to other renders iv played with im working on a sceen using splins and making them light casting neon tubes in the sceen its way kewl
but other then that there dosent seem to be that much to get excited about im not sure about the new modeling tools i like that reactor comes with max now for free but all and all it feels mor like an upgrade then a new version

but thats just how i see it

how about the new graph editor, UVW mapping, radiocity, and general speed increases in the default scanline renderer.

I think it's a great step foward!

=)

Or the new UVW and texturing tools, the integration of Meshtools stuff into the Poly modifiers, The symmetry and Weld vertex modifiers, the improved skin modifier, pressure sensative painting, spline IK, quicker way to set keyframes, and the new character animation tools?

I would say there is a lot of awesome things in R5.

LOL or there again you could say.. what about all the things they didn't address or wow..... how could they write a toon shader that made GI seem quick etc etc....:D

hehe, yeah... the toon shader is pretty slow

at least it works though :)

[edit] Nobody really mentioned all the UI enhancements. I REALLY like the transform manips now, especially rotate and scale

They didn't write it. It is InkNPaint by Blur and uses the Raytracer. So it is sort of Brazil's grand-father and thus not that fast ;)

Yep! Like they didn't write the raytrace and arealight stuff. They bought all the RayFX stuff from blur which was free for R3.
The radiosity stuff was already introduced in VIZ4.

For me it's also more a minor update.
I like the new polytools and animation enhencements very much, but I really don't need all the radiosity and GI stuff because I already bought a better plugin renderer like thousands of other users did.
It should have be there much earlier!
I also don't need reactor although it's avery powerful tool. I'd prefer to buy one package for the whole company when I need it for a job.
Discreet should offer a "small" update without the new renderstuff and reactor for half the price. I would buy then for all the seats here but right now we stay with R4.
I know a lot of users who think the same way and didn't upgrade yet. Too expensive, especially here in europe.

P.S.: Still waiting for better particles and huge OGL speedups!

Thanks for the note on that Bobo....... you'd think they could just have easily introduced it to R4, when Cartoon Reyes weren't around to show it up for what it is. It's really hard not to get a bit cynical about just what developments did they make for R5 that didn't already exist as scripts or as part of either Viz or CS. Ok..some ... but considering the .. er ..'claims' and the fact they have managed to pretty much forget about *cough* 'nurbs' and the particles since 2.5 (more or less apart from a few minor revisions)...............mmnn development heaven is here on earth. :D

Heres a neat rumour for ya... I heard that the guy who wrote Particle Studio, Oleg Bayborodin, was hired by discreet to work on the particle systems. We have a licence of PStudio here, and its a pretty damn cool toy. and would make Maxs particle stuff kick ass.

Anyway I also heard (Still in rumour mode) that he didnt quite make the deadline for the 5.0 release, so maybe we can expect a kick ass upgrade later in the year.?

Anyway there is a little substance to these claims, heres a pic of my abouts screen....

http://www.oneglasseye.co.nz/uploads/Oleg.jpg

For me the upgrade to 5 was only just justifyable as we also brought more licences of Lightwave for $200 more than the upgrade of max....but Im more than happy with it. I havent had the chance to really play with it, but its the small things that are making me happy like the new manipulators, sub-div control in sub levels, unwrapper etc.

Im happy over all

How many people read the About screens?
I started with this hobby in Autodesk 3D Studio R2 when there were only two names on the list... Nowadays, it has to scroll to show you all!
My personal favorite is last name in the 3rd line of the Technical Publications block.

Wao man, thats the name of that guy who writes all those cool plaugins for max...I've heard about him:p

BTW render History (my favorite of his plugins) dosesnt work on My Max 5.?and on Max 4 it had this habit of moving the dialog box up the screen 1 pixel each render. if you didnt catch it in time it would dissapear out of screen forever:D .

Kinda neat looking throughthe about and seeing half of the discreet support board with there name somewhere.

I wonder is this as geeky as watching movie and TV credits.?

The moving of dialogs in MAXScript was fixed in max 5. Getting and setting the position and size caused problems, but this is now history.

There will be a new TrueRenderHistory for max 5 soon (called "True" because it will monitor your test renders and snap the last rendered image to a directory of your choice behind your back with no key pressing). Stay tuned.

I got official TV credits just once (on 3 episodes of "Roughnecks") and they wrote my name wrong, still people emailed me telling me they noticed. (both my name and the typo :) ).
My stuff has been used in other TV productions, games and who knows what, but I don't have much info. That's why I put that Call For Credits on my site...
(I remember writing MorphSliders in a single night for the production of "Virtual Jay Leno" because I was promised credits on NBC, but they forgot to show any credits at the end of the show. :scream:
Some months ago, MAxTRIX was used in "Charmed" for some Piper-Freezing-Time-And-Demon effects :) )
Of course, it is a VERY cool feeling.

It isn't me, it is my big EGO writing those scripts ;)

tehe yea, tis kinda cool.

I remember some many years ago, eunning down to the local dairy to see a magazine I had contributed to the Graphic design. Seeing my name in the magazine credidts was the greatest thing. Since then Ive had it appear in quite a few local Broadcast. Problem with TV stuff is Im so buggered by the end of a project I cant sit down and bear watching stuff anyway :)

Though My mum always calls up and tells me she saw it :)

They were the creators of 3d studio, and 3dsmax, until discreet entered in the game. I am right?

Yeah you are right, but they was in all max versions credits, and no in max5. Does Discreet have finish paying them for the first work at max ?? So they could decrease the max price....

I remember when max 1.0 came out in 1996 there was a press release somewhere that the Yost Group has prolonged their contract with Autodesk until 2000.
So R3 back in 1998/99 was a sort of transition from Yost Group to Kinetix/Discreet development.
Last thing I know is that Gary Yost retired and is enjoying private life with his family in North California.

Paying 6 programmers more or less will surely not influence the price of max. Also, the credits list looks actually longer than in prior releases... ;)
