View Full Version : PA Challenge - Character / Landscape - KOryH

Well here is my first post.
Hopefully I will actually finish this one. I am looking forward to this particular challenge because it is so different than my normal stuff.
The concept is..."NUCLEAR Winter Olympics 2102"
Cheesy, yes. Could be interesting and fun, We will see.
I am going to attempt a Mike Mignola kind of style for the character and a retro-future look for the environments.

so on with the pics...

Finally... hehehe... I've been waiting for a bit to see some mignola infulenced 3D stuff that was worth looking at! Like the drawings a lot, hope you'll pull it off for the 3D! I also like the graplin idea... And, of course, the snowboards style venicule. Would be very interresting to see guys surfing on rubble... hehehe... Good luck.

Here is what I did during lunch.
It looks alittle slick right now, but the textures will make it look VERY used. At least, that is what I am planning on.

Here is a glamour shot of my PA Dude.
I still need to clean up and refine some of my ideas on the helmet, but I think this will give you a pretty good feel of the direction I am going in.

Cool design, i like the proportions, Yeah Mike Mignola has a great style... I like the glamour shot... but is he going to have a mask???

Great stuff, keep goin m8

I like the cell shading on the board....just make the outline a little less obvious....+ add some sort of foot straps if you can:) :)

KOryH
02-08-2002, 06:48 AM
Yeah, he will have some sort of mask thing. But he never puts it on all the way. He will also have some ear phones.
I have added some more stuff to the board.
Take a look...

Here is another fun update.
The modeling is going well. And I am just doing some color and layout sketches like this to see what kind of scene would work.
This one was about 15-20 mins.
I like how the style is evolving. I am shooting for the Retro look.
Any feedback would be cool.
I should be scanning in a mess load of pages from my sketchbook soon. So stay tuned!
Thanks.

Hi KOryH,

I love your sketches...

Can you provide some info on your techniques ?
*Old school acryl* or waccom+photoshop ?
Do you have a link to good tutorials or some more sketches
of this quality ?

Ah, the idea is also marvelous, btw. a bit like my
favourite Batmancomics - or the TV series.

Thanks to everyones comments and compliments so far.
I am really having a good time thinking about this guy.
He is quickly moving up my list of subjects for my next short film. All I need is a good story and the rest should come nicely.

Here are those sketches I promised.
I made them pretty in Photoshop. You can see the mask and new costume design. I am really trying to push the Deco/ Streamline look. I am a sucker for that stuff.

Tim: I did most of these in PS only. The last ones were scanned and then messed with. I come from a traditional background so that sure helps. Also, I have an unquenchible desire for all good images. My harddrive is getting full of reference and inspiration. (no not porn!)
I feel like the more I look at, the more I can see and understand. Simply put, I try to surround myself with good art and hope that it's magic finds it way into my own work.

WOW,
Thanks everyone!
Like I said before this is turning out to be very fun.
I think some of your comments have really pushed me.
So I thank you again.
As some of you noticed, this is inspired by some very specific comics and artists. I also like to look at the old Max Fleicher Superman cartoons. There is definatly some Rocketeer in ther as well. Dave Stevens more than the movie. I am definatly stuck in the 30's and 40's. Other things that inspire me are the early American Illustrators like Pyle, Wyeth, Parrish and Lyenendecker.

Well some of you asked for some 3D stuff so here is a little some thing to whet your whistle.

Hi KOryH,

flawless, but... :-)

I find the placement and detail of the boardtexture
(the éightball girl) too much or overdetailed.
the idea is cool but somehow I´d expect a more handdrawn
look (color+outline or disney/warner aka color w/shadows).
imho this would fit better to the appearance of the
character.

from your drawings, sketches and the propdesign sofar, I
would have guessed you´ll shot for a more *classic* toonlook
for texturing, lots of color with some dirt and grease to make it lively. Sort of mapping your *PA_DUDE_jump_sm.jpg* to the
props.

Kindly

Tim

BTW. The rendering looks a little pixelated...Do you have your antialiasing on?...I agree with tim; it will be better to use one of your own "mignola look" drawings for the board art.

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the comments again.
As for the low quality of the renders, You are exactly right...I have no antialising on. These renders took about 20-25 seconds max. I like to do this so I can see changes right away. It is just a working method of mine.
And for the textures and stuff. I am hopeing that I can have a fairly detailed character and environment and use lighting to go in and out of details. I am going to try to light it Noir style, but with neat colors. A stretch, maybe, but I will try anyway.

Well Here are the fruits of a couple hours of work this weekend,

What can I say buds, this is going to be an excellent piece when its done. I couldnt really tell cause of the noise in the renders if you have textured him up at all. If not have you thought about texturing up the clothing and material pieces to look fairly real and leaving the face as is. Besides that its really kicking ass, wicked style. Keep it up.

KOryH
02-19-2002, 10:18 PM
Yes, it is comming along. I have to add some more subtle detail to the clothing and work on thoes hands.
I agree with all comments and suggestions. And I am working on it, when I have the chance. I will be busy here at work for a couple of days, but I will try to do something.
In the mean time, I have done a quick little animation of the Dude on his board. The board is just a stand in. I have got into the habit of having a very low, low res stand in for every thing that moves, especially characters that I animate. As cool as Lightwave is, it is still a little slow for character animation. I have this workaround and it seems pretty cool. I can have instant feedback and close to real time playback with out previews. I can explain my process further to anyone who uses lightwave if you want.
Anyway here is the Ani.
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a professional animator, just a big fan of making things move. You will see poor timeing and popping. I only spent about an hour on it, so be kind.
I give this to you in the name of fun, not to show off my animation skill.
That said...enjoy.

Man -moped is right, excellentanimations. Wish I had good ass results from animated sketches.

If you just got 1.5.7, you will find rigging and animtion response so quick,it'll break your wrist.

YemYam
02-20-2002, 01:56 AM
Are you a skater KOryH? I have been for 22 years and it looks like you have the motions for a fs180 olie down. Nice animation, I really like your style and concept. Can't wait to see more!

KOryH
02-20-2002, 02:01 AM
moped and Julez I was not going for false humility. I just feel that animation is not my forte, eventhough I would rather animate than anything else.

Yeah, I used Messiah on a couple of projects and it saved my ass.
Then again it was in the 5.6 days. Now, however, I have grown dependent on morph targets and weight maps. As for rigging, Automated character setup is what I use for a base on all my stuff. I can't say enough good things about this guy. his name is
Lukasz "Pazur" Pazera and he does some kick ass work. His rig is a complete l-script and you can change it anyway you like. once again cool stuff. here is a link.
http://www.pazur.3d.pl/AutoCharSetup/index.html

Back to messiah...it is absolutly amazing and I plan on using it more as time goes on, for now I have my little system going. Although, I still have linked scene kookyness. Oh well.
I should have another qick update in a couple of hours. I am sneeking in some modeling between sketches and paintings here at work.
See ya soon.

PS YAM the man... I wish! I absolutly love to watch surfing, skating and snowboarding. I have tried but don't have the skillz. So I will live vicariously through my animations. the rest of the move will be a grind and maybe a kick-flip off the end.

Cool! I'm sure living in SF you are exposed to it quite a bit. I lived there when I was young and then in Orange County. The kickflip will be the hardest, but with reference I'm sure you can pull it off.

I know you've watched a bunch of skate vids but just in case you haven't seen this one I'd get the Tony Hawk Trick Tips II dvd. It has some excellent camera shots and slow-mo's of street tricks. Because it's an instructional vid it really breaks down the mechanics of each trick and might help you more than watching a traditional skate vid.

Keep up the awesome work!

Again - I am floored by the talent floating around this world. I've seen it in music, and now I see it in art. I am convinced that the best stuff is always done by the unknown.

I am really impressed at how close your 3d models are to your drawings.

And as a snowboarder/sk8er, your FS180 movement is PERFECT. Really good job. Cant wait to see that kickflip! How about a nose grind to a kickflip?!? Tho it might be a cool idea to go totally nuts with a crazy trick. Something completely unbelieveable, or something ultra-hard ... Ever hear of a "darkslide"? Imagine doing half of a kickflip so that your board lands grip-tape down, and then railsliding, and half-kickflip out.... You have to see it to believe it!!!

anyway - just an idea....

Well here is an update for all you art junkies.
I did a pass at the noir lighting that I talked about earlier.
I think it's working fairly well and will continue to add details to the character model. I am also changing the board a little. Mostly following some of the great suggestions given in previous posts.
I will also try to work on the cityscape some more later in the week.
On a related but not challenge note:
As I continue working on this character he seems to be creating himself and his world. It is now evident that there is quite alot of things about this guy that need exploring. So I have decided to do a short film with him in the lead role. I have some cool ideas that will suprise and delight some of you. I am pretty excited and will be working hard on keeping all of you up to date.
I will be setting up a website devoted to the process. I will be an adventure worth taking.
thank you all so much for the support so far.
See ya soon

For details...I'm not sure you are right!
Your character and your graphic style are perfect like that...
it won't be the same with more!!!

Keep it like this!
For the next challenge,i think lot of people will put less detail on there character(after they have seen your work!),and you, you will put more!!!
It's like this! We change our minds each others! Here we can see how good is this forum for all of us!

KOryH
02-21-2002, 05:52 AM
timothyD thanks I'm having fun

Totitch I totally agree with you. I will be very conservitive with the amount of detail I add. I am very concerned with the silloutte of the character, so I won't add anything that detracts form the overall feel. However, I want to create some interest in the shadows and and transitional values that flat color and simplified geometry won't allow me to get. I am not completely interested in making a 3D version of Batman or Mignola's comic work. I want to do something that feels like it, and has that sencibility in design, but has an extra layer of richness that a 3D rendering can provide.
Thanks again for you support!

I love the character, and the animation looks very good. I especially like the secondary animation on the landing. I think it would look even better if the begining of the jump had the same amount of anticipation (ie, a crouch before the jump). But hey, it's better than I could do! :P

Hey All!

No major updates, for now. I still have to scan some more drawings in. I have started developing some additional characters and I have some cool ideas for transportation and mechanical things. I just have to get it out of my head and on to the page. Beleive it or not I also have a short outline done for the script. Fun, Fun,Fun. I can't stop! I am a fool with a mission. As promised, I have started a website devoted to the process of finishing this project.

Your character is great!

One thing though, hope I don't say this incorrectly. And it is just an opinion, I don't want it to seem like a diss.

But, I really liked him with the t-shirt, really looked cool.

He looks really great in the "rocketeer" type clothes, I personally love art deco style.

But the t-shirt from your illustrations made him more "independent". Which definetly vibes good. I been snowboarding for like 8 years and when I saw your prelim sketches I loved the feel they conveyed. He seems more "establishment" now.

Also, I thought his grappling hook was awesome! That alone immediately constituted a backstory. You immediately ask the questions like: How did he lose his hand? How will he use that thing? Is he a good shot with it?

Again, no disrespect, just liked the rustic feel of the drawings. Is the guy with the grappling hook his twin? :D

El Tonio

Great ! I would be glad to have half your talent .

But sucking balls don't make things get better, so I go on the "bad point" : to me, your inspirations are great but maybe too clear . The board has this external power just like the ones in episode I, and the helmet of the guy is almost the exact replica of the cops'one in the fifth element .
If you haven't seen those movies, I apologize . But if you did, that's bad, man :D
No, seriously, it's one of the most difficult challenge in arts : remembering all what you've seen and make the difference between your own ideas and a souvenir . I have this prob all the time !!

Once again, your skills are great ! Hope to see a tutorial soon on your site : I'm really bad with colors and it makes me sad...

Hi yall!

dingo-- Yes I have had those concerns myself. I was just looking at those early drawings yesterday and was thinking about the T-shirt. I am going to try to come up with a better compromise. ( Capt'n too) And as for the grappling hook, it is still there; I just haven’t finalized the design. It will be a Forearm piece and he still has both of his hands. Sorry. It will be kind of like a gauntlet.

El Tonio--- thanks for the advice. I see what you mean about the lightning thing from Episode I, I actually was inspired by those goofy things found in all laboratories in 50's horror films. They were always called things like "The Transponder" or " Refractulator" or some sort of psudo-medical industrial term.
And the Helmet, yikes! I will have to look at that movie again. I had no idea. Though from what I remember, both 5th Element and I are pulling from similar influences. Great minds? Maybe or maybe not. I will be sure to check it out. Thanks for the tip.

Everyone else--- thanks for the kind words and constructive comments. They all are very helpful.

Talk to ya soon.

Hey thanks for the replys!
I have been a little slow on the character modeling, but I do have an update. I have been working on real work stuff and finalizing story ideas and other characters for the short film.
I think I will have the opening sequence boarded out by the end of the week. so stay tuned.

Allllriiiight on with the little update.
http://retroactive.homestead.com/files/CHARACTERS/PA_BODY_ren_4.jpg

I think I need to tweek his porportions a little. maybe the head needs to be smaller. to give it that animated coolness feel like in my drawings. Huh? waddaya think?

thanks!

pascal_blanche
02-26-2002, 12:40 AM
yup, true, you should shrink your head a little ... for now there's still something (little thing) missing.. your drawings make him look cooler.. just a question of proportion I guess ;) push it a little bit more...

El Tonio
02-26-2002, 12:42 AM
Gosh !

Not only you got terrible 2D skills, but you also go 3D !! Nice .

Concerning the proportions, I would say head is small enough regarding the size of chest & arms . I would make the legs a little bit longer (if I really had to say something) .

Good continuation !

Totitch
02-26-2002, 01:27 AM
Great stuff...
I agree with Pascal when he says to shrink the head.
It will give him, a more "adult physic", and the look he has got on your sketches!

Very very nice...as usual! :)

KOryH
02-26-2002, 01:35 AM
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I shrunk the head slightly and lenthened the legs. It gave him more heroic porportions and I like it. Here is the quick update.
I need to re-rig some of the stuff because of the new lenths and all, but it should be easy, just no cool pose this time.
Any more suggestions would be great!

once again, thanks everyone!

That "richness and sensibility" in design is certainly coming across well. There is a good amount of detail in this character and not so much detail as to destract you a good balance I think.

El Tonio
02-26-2002, 02:50 AM
Really great !

But if you REALLY want to have suggestions, I can be really pernickety (in fact, I am) :D
So, here we go :
-maybe the chin could go to a bit more rectangular (vs trapezoid) form, to go closer to an old 50's hero-like face . In fact, like in some of your first sketches .
-his waist could be just a little bit thiner because as a sk8ter, this zone has to be really flexible, and right now, it's a little bit (very little bit ) too "tuby" .
-his right trousers leg (the long one) is strange in the knee zone . Imo, should be larger (with maybe pleats) .

That all for the moment, but still watching ! :D

Once again, really nice job .

Equinoxx
02-26-2002, 03:15 AM
still lovin it man, but imho the old proportions were much better :o it gave him this chubby "anti"-hero look which I liked very much . . . the new one imo is to heroic for his own good.
Just a thought on my behalf ;)

Julez4001
02-26-2002, 03:16 AM
Like Batman/ or JL animated series....
they tend to have the shoulders to balance or direct the action, in this last pic, he simply doesn't that Bruce Timm appeal, maybe not anatomy correct if u made some shoulders, but definitely style in-keepings (yeah i made that up).

KOryH
02-26-2002, 03:27 AM
Thanks for the suggestions.
I am leaning quickly, that you cannot make all of the people happy all of the time. Also quick ambiguous sketches are great because everyone can fill in the blanks with what they want.
No worries though. All the suggestions are valid. And I take them all to heart. There is some thing to be taken from them all. I feel like I have a pretty good vision for the end product and, of course, how the character will look in context. I hope everyone will at least appreciate the final, even if you feel that you would have had made some different decisions.

See ya soon!

hi KOryH,

as pascal put it, a little bit of tweaking.

The waist belt seems distorted, maybe due to
a prefinal skinning.

One thing i don´t like yet is his right lower leg, the
long pant doesn´t crease naturally enough and the
knee is a bit too much (?).

I does look cool on the left side though.

Gorgeous.

Thanks All!
I have been struggling with those pants for weeks. I have been avoiding them at all costs. I have found a small action figure that has some very simple yet cool pants that I have started to use as reference. I will have an update in a day or so. I will post a well lit render for those who want to see the details, or lack there of, whichever the case may be.

For now, here are some location shots. One is a sketch of the opening shot. It is a pan, or crane shot. It starts on the puddle of water and moves up to reveal the city at dusk. The next is a few shots later and is a down shot (obviously). Note: modeling and lighting are NOT final. Suggestions are more than welcome.

Thanks for all your help and support!

PS I use a big 11" Intuos at work and an old small wacom at home. the pressure settings are the most important thing to get right.

Whoa.

Your stuff is absolutely amazing. No disrespect to everyone else who is posting for the challenge, but your idea was fresh and original to start with - and the modelling is great. There are a few too many 'pipes and masks' design styles, even if the modelling is wicked, among some other posts IMHO...

Oh yeah -you draw like a god :) Love your style. The retro influence is sooo nice, just a fresh spin on things and keeping clear of the cliches. I know we won't be voting *purely* on design alone, but I think that even the best models are diminished if they haven't been planned out first.

It's looking at stuff like this that inspires me - like looking at the beautiful new 'art of monsters inc' book - to do more work and try and improve myself.

Well done and thanks for sharing your work!

All right I gotta couple of more days than I thought.
So instead of a character update, I will give you some moving goodness. This was done as a test for the animatic process I will try to use. Basically, a proof of production methodology. I only spent about 2 hrs from concept to completion. The animation is NOT cleaned up in any way; as a matter of fact most of the keys are linear. Well, with that said. Enjoy.
Btw I changed the pants again. I will try to put up a render later today!

This may be a little late for my input but I liked that proportions of
this sketch the best

http://korysdump.homestead.com/files/FORUM/CHALLENGES/PA_DUDE_sketch_3.jpg

The things that I liked about it is
chest area
thickness of the wrist
thickness of the pants

I also see that you are trying to push the exaggerated superhero
proportions but I think the sketch has a more aestetic beauty

P.S. Any word from Pixar yet?

you working working working day and night !!!!
and no tired no tiredness at night???
you're a work machine ...get on up....
just a critique: I've seen in your animation that you don't animate the fingers and it make the character too rigid, maybe you don't "bonesed" it?

YemYam
03-01-2002, 01:35 PM
The animation is sweet. I would like to see him do a huge bomb drop after he hops on his board (follow him down the hill with the pearl harbor bomb camera style). It would be cool too it he scrapes some of the junk/buildings he's hoverboarding over down the hill ... get some of that grindage in. But then you would have to add particle systems and deflection and .... uggghhhh no sleep for you ...

Equinoxx
03-01-2002, 03:23 PM
it looks ok, but there are some points begging for attention.

1st of, it looks like you didn't bone/animate the fingers. his hand is way to rigid while swining it around.

The rain is indeed not aligned with the perspective of the shot, which makes me think its composited, which is good, but make sure it's raining down in the same perspective as the character. add some motion blur to the rain too.

He jumps awfully fast on his board to . . . give it some time to get a hovergrasp on the ground before he takes of.

and it looks as if his neck stretches when he bends it forward . . .

but keep going, see what you can do to fix these points . . .

I have found a guy that I will be working with too make sure the music is as amazing and cool as the visuals. I am very excited to work with him. He has alot of experience doing this sort of thing.
I have moved on from character modeling to story stuff. I have a few little things to fix and tweak on the main dude, but he is where I want him for now. I will put up a quick turnaround for some eyecandy. Hopefully some final renders later this week, and of course before the deadline!

skygunner---As a matter of fact I did go to Art Center, but I feel the similarities a re purely coincidental. Both of our styles were not encouraged at that time at Art Center. While I certainly learned great fundamental skills and an amazing work ethic while attending ACCD, it wasn't until years later did I realized what I enjoyed to draw and paint.
I love Michiko's work and wish I would have known her at school, I think we missed each other by about a year.

As far as books go? I can honestly say, anything that you like is a good start. I just look at something that I like and try to figure out why I like it and what makes it work.
There is one website that I look at everyday, or at least the pictures that I downloaded.
http://www.artrenewal.org
Check out the "museum." It has cataloged hi-res images from artist throughout time. An amazing resource!

For formal instruction? Art Center at night. Or, and my personal preference, check out Associate in Art
http://www.associatesinart.com/
The instructors there are incredibly talented and working industry professionals.

I think that is a pretty good start. Good luck!
Remember it is all about mileage, meaning practice.

Oh yeah check out www.goodbrush.com
Craig Mullins is another Art center Grad. He has copied a paper by John Singer Sargent that anyone interested in visual arts should memorize.

Love the character design on this, so simple but so effective. Stylisation and setting are equally cool too. Look forward to keeping tabs on your site to see where you take this.

No time to re-render, but i did tweek it a bit. i changed the sky according to Psumos good suggestion. It is a little pixelated but I will eventually fix it, so no worries. I am at video resolution not print so the quality or size isn't suited for highend moniters. I think I will start designing for DVD or HDTV that shlould help. It will also increase to render times. Oh, well.

Thanks everyone!
