Looks amazing! Hats off and 4 stars to you!

Two very minor comments: I would paint over with white the far edge of the cannon hole of the cannons that are firing. It is hard to tell which one is firing from this angle and that makes it look weird to my eye. Also I see some small verticle lines in the the foreground water, if they are reflections of the ship I dont think it is coming accross, it doesnt really need it.

Nice work love the detail, the comments Jose made about the reflections are pretty much my thoughts as well, they don't read as reflections (if that's what they are), again, love the datails on the ship impressive 25 hours of work. 3.5stars

I wouldn't call this a crit, but the recoil after firing will push the cannons back from the portholes. If the ship was firing at will, then not every cannon could be seen from the outside of the ship. On the other hand, if they were being controlled strickly when to fire, then they all should be firing at once... thus none of the cannons would be pushed away. Other than that, this work is truly impressive! Your eye for detail is strong. :D

All I can say is great job. No critics from me. Lovely ships.

A strong piece! Well painted. I would love to see a character in the water hanging onto one of those pieces of wreckage. It would add a more human feel to the battle and give me something or someone to relate to.

Stahlberg

Very very good. But I think there would be lots more smoke. Now I can understand you don't want to hide that beautiful ship, but I think smoke lit from inside or behind or in front by explosions and running lights, at night, really offers a tremendous opportunity for some amazingly beautiful effects. I know there's some smoke here, and we could imagine some wind is pushing it away... but still, gun powder produces lots of smoke, and each muzzleflash would be inside a thick ball of it.
I also think there might be a small perspective problem with the back part of the ship (stern). But other than that, amazing image.

edit: (you could also add some splashes in the water from missed gunshots)

I like the look of this picture. Excellent work! The darkness in the battle area looks great. My favorite part of the picture, though, is the back of the ship with the horses. That's really awesome.

Man, this is absolutely stunning. Love the detail and the concept, the only thing that bothers me is a hard brushed smoke, I think it would be more smooth. But overall, is one of the best paintings I ever saw.

to zero-bALANce:Yes, you are right with the cannons. next ship will have guns in various positions.
to Stahlberg: I forgot the splashes in the water completely, and the smoke can be mutch more thicker, and more lighten by the shots. I am still learnig to paint.
to all: Thank you for the critics and the great replys, It helps me to paint better.

This is great!

I liked at first that distant ship off to the right, which is calmer and apparently not engaged in the fight, but the more I look at it the more it distracts, it's like an entirely different picture. Maybe that's the idea, and it doesn't necessarily spoil the overall piece, but it does distract, for me anyway.

But like I say, superb piece of work, stunning!

excellent! My only comment is that the small ship on far right in the background is perhaps slighter higher in relation to horizon than ought to be if it were to remain strictly in proportion. But that's a very minor point in comparison to the overall merits of the image

FitArtistSF
11-10-2004, 04:46 PM
Yes, I would agree with a few of the comments, especially about the fire/muzzle flashes coming from the mouths of the cannons. The fire would completely obscure the cannon mouths and the smoke would also completely obscure the detail and most of the sides of the ships. Remember, this is almost 300 years before the invention of smokeless powder. In a fleet action such as portrayed, after only a short time of sustained cannon fire by the multitude of ships, a thick fog would all but hide those ships. Many memoirs and accounts surviving write of the "fog of battle" and the sometimes mistaken firing into friendly ships thinking them the enemy. The attention to detail on the ornamentation of the Sovereign is well-done, and I know the artist may not want to hide his work on it behind cannon smoke. Here's an idea: try having the forward-most guns firing, as if she is turning starboard (to the right) firing into an off scene enemy as she turns, concentrating on adding more realistic smoke, and leave those further aft unfired, thus giving us the viewer the chance to see a little of the side of the ship details you painted. If you need references: watch the movies: Master & Commander, Damn the Defiant, Capt. Horatio Hornblower (both the 1951 Gregory Peck movie and the A & E series w/ ioan Gruffuld). These will show good, realistic firing and smoke effects.

Oi...

I've been staring at this for a full ten minutes, incapable of looking away. The large resolution image just completely blows me away. I've long had a fascination for old ships - I can't paint them worth damn but I find them so very beautiful and intriguing in their design.

Interestingly enough, my favourite part of the image is the ship in the distance, to the main ship's right. I just find it incredibly well done and with the perfect amount of details. Not to say that the rest isn't gorgeous - it is! - just that this little bit of the image has me in complete thrall.

Excellent work!

I wouldn't dare to critecise your work at all, but I think there is something wrong in the reflection paint of the ship in front, not convincing, don't you think so? I beleive in paintings sometimes reality must be changed to satisfy minds of audienc. This fact can be noticed specially on horse movements.
It is still wonderful, awaiting to see more.

Lovely image. Now i have to tell i didn't read all replies, i'm in short of time and it always takes me time, to critisize, so sorry, if i repeat everyone. Possibly someone has already noticed... So these old ships used black gunpowder in their cannons. Very dirty, it created a HUGE amount of smoke in that quantity. I don't like the muzzle flashes, they are like candlelight. But this is not a fire like that, burning peacefully, it is a bright and clear flash. BANG. I miss that feeling. I'm not sure about their size, but i think they could be larger as well. Take a look at a photo. You won't really find one from that era of course, but you can see XX. century warships firing their cannons. A battleship's cannons produce a wall of fire beside the ship. These are much bigger cannons of course, but a modern warship carries much less of the big guns than a man-of-war. That time the ships' strength was determined by the number of cannons. I find the other parts of the image perfect. :)
Well done.

This most certainly is a fine piece of work . . . what references did you use? I like the old wooden ships, and would like to produce a piece like this, but in 3DS. Unfortunately I do not know too much about the way these boats were built. Please PM me if you actually see this post among all the others . . . I'd like to know where to begin on one of these.

The oil look is exceptional. The smoke is probably the only area, artistically, that needs work. Obviously there are the technical considerations like the state of the cannons, etc. Did you use Sir Peter Lely's painting as reference?

I am glad to hear you are writing a tutorial - looking forward to reading through it and having a go myself, perhaps. I am hoping to get myself a tablet sometime after Christmas :)
