Ioan Bārlădeanu has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=5160)

Latest Update: Concept Sketch: getting close

Ok, this is close to what I want to show...
Of course, the explosion needs more debris and sparks, but again, lazyness rules.
There's not much story in it.. I know, it's disappointing, it's just an image inside my head, and my desire to test some techniques that I know only in theory.
Ok, Romanians will recognise this, but for the rest of the world I will explain: the photo that I use is taken in Bucharest, capital of Romania (where I moved recently). Ideally, the final result, beside the still required by the challenge, will also be a short animated sequence (I hope to get my hands on the broadcast-quality mini-DV camera that we have at work). Some sort of "Breaking News Flash".
That's it. Wish me "Happy compositing" :)

This is the first impression that I have about a big carrier ship, wich will obviously be destroyed during the dramatic conflict that shears the galaxy. That is the exact moment that I'm planning to illustrate.
My next move will be playing around with some low-poly models in order to get a better idea about the layout (I'm fluctuating between a front-side view, with the ship breaking in half, interceptors flowing towards it, and a view taken from the middle section (living quarters), witch contains a lot of complicated metallic structure parts. Anyway, I'm sure that it will break in half :)

looks big :)

I like the design of the ship, not to complicated, but leaving room for detail modeling & texture work, very cool

If you want to illustrate the ship breaking in half, the pov depends on what you want the feeling of the pic to be.

If you go for the front side view, you'll have the impression of a huge vessel breaking, kinda like "the OMG the titanic sunk" feeling

if you go for the mid part view, you'll be able to point out the wreckage more, to keep the metaphore, the shot where they zoom in on the people hanging on the tilted part ot ship in the movie the "OMG look at all those people falling of the titanic" shot, alltho I expect the ship to be a little to big to be able to see people on it... but you get the idea

so it depends on what you want the viewer to experience, both ideas have lots of potential tho

good luck :bounce:

Thanks, man.
I'll think about details as I'll go further with the concept ( considering that the final result will be a still image, I don't think there's any purpose to model more than what's visible, unless I decide to make an animated sequence later).
As for the shape, I like most the middle ring part, I'm not very sure about the front section (hangar bays section), but .. who knows what I dream overnight :)
I like your way of describing the effect of the views (Titanic :applause: ), and, who knows, maybe you'll see some people too (actualy, people "components" ). But there's still a long way to go before that level of detail.

Guess I'll be making sketches untill the the weekend, when I'll have time for something more serious.

Nah, the first one is the best in my opinion, I really like it infact.

After making a very low poly model, to better understand the perspective (I've stopped drawing a few years ago, wich makes it hard for me to figure it out)....

This is how the ship should look like. I have to add the smaller ships attacking it, and some other ships in the background.
I prefer working on the sketches i Photoshop, as my hand drawing rather sucks. This gives me the opportunity to make adjustments, and alows a more "impressionist" approach. Usefull for atmospheric study.

I found the blue ship better , it would be cool if it have a little transparency.

Good luck.

Heh.. I see now why people like that ship better :)

It's appearance is not exactly what I had in mind. But it seems to look a bit "ethereal", that's just because the sketch was too messy, so I've inverted it while working in Photoshop.

But this gives me an idea... maybe I'll use both ships, in a confrontation (second ship with transparency). Right now I'm working on some interceptors and bombers belonging to the second ship, I'll post them a bit later.

an interceptor. rough sketch.

Notice the orientable main jets, something like the F22 or the Russian Suhoi Iforgotit'sname, that allows for extreme maneuvrability at high speeds.
Under it's belly, it carries a deadly arsenal - the 2 energised particles cannons on the sides, 2 gatling railguns, and plenty of missiles (not shown, due to lazyness :) ).

Have you thought about having "escape pods" or whatnot around the broke-in-half ship? You could show a close up of one escaping the camera frame and show the occupants (man and woman) through the "windscreen?" You could even show it taking a small glancing blow from one of the bad-guys interceptor ships... Which are the antagonists? The broke ship or the attackers? I like both ships even though I understand why people like the translucent one... They want to subconsciensly see technology never before thought of... And what's better than a transparent ship? Kinda like the super bad guys on Babaylon 5... Forgot the name of them.. They had the spider looking ships...

Your drawing is fine...

To GlassFX:

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, I thought about them.
I'm not very sure about close-ups on anything else than the ship, because I want to focus on it's "death. I want to make the viewers almost hear the enourmous mass of metal squeaking in it's last agonisyng moments.
I haven't started working on the attackers yet. But I think they will be a different human faction. Humans have a tradition in killing each other for stupid reasons
Unfortunatelly, I was never a big admirer of B5, so I don't really know what you mean. But I've seen this kind of thing before.

And my drawing it's not fine. That's why you don't see anything drawn on paper here. :)

Thanks, dude. I think it will take some time before I post again, I'm trying to learn some 3Ds MAX on this ocasion (I've been with LightWave for 7 years, but I've seen some nice features in MAX that I'd like to try. And this seems a good opportunity :) )

just started the ship... it's one day beginner's work in MAX (first day was used to figure out how it works). A lot of detail to be expected...

It right up your alley.

Have any ideas for a story????

I have some ideas for a story, and I'll post them pretty soon, too bad that I'm quite busy with work right now.
Yeah, Homeworld 2 is somewhere in that area, but I'll be on the alley next to it. The one that's darker.

Wow just found this thread and your concept seems very cool.

Just a quick question (And I dunno if you've already answered this, as I haven't read through... just skimmed it), but are you planning on using the photo in the final piece or are you gonna model the building?? Just interested as to your approach.

Woooooooooow, very nice concept sketch.
Real action, I like it.
Is it before, or after the elections?
Sa nu-mi spui ca la ultimul etaj e sediul de campanie al PSD-ului.
Keep up the good work dude!!
Great concept!! :applause: :applause:

.... are you planning on using the photo in the final piece or are you gonna model the building?? Both. As I've said, I plan to use some real video footage for the anim, and a real photo for the still. But I will have to make a low-poly version of the landscape, I'll need it to match the movement of the camera, and also for the alpha channel. The top of the building, and other damaged areas, will be modeled, for the destruction sequence (I'd love to plant some dynamite, but the mayor refused my proposal  ). Ships, flak gun, troops, these will be added by CG. Although, for the video footage, I plan to get a bunch of friends to run as the "civilians running in terror". I will also use a layered matte painting for the sky to make it more dramatic, to add smoke and flames in the distance (I hope to catch a sunny day with clear sky for the footage - that'll make masking easier). I'm not sure about many things, I'll improvise as I go through 'em.

Thanks to everyone for your appreciation.

nice concept!

I like the color contrast.
Only thing to crit for me would be, that the position of the muzzle flash is a bit unlucky... at first sight, you can't tell if the guy shoots at the building or the ship, because the line between the gun and the ship get's cut by the fire in the building (which has the same color than the muzzle flash) :(

rest is perfect!

good luck!

CYCLER

I know. As a matter of fact, I've even mentioned it before :)
It's just an idea. And, to make things worse, the actual ship is muuuch bigger. I'll adjust the final composition within the 3d space. Long way to go 'till then.
