This is my first sketch of the galactic battle. The title is: “Last day of Kallidar” and is a scene from the script I’m working on.
In this picture I’m illustrating the fall of Kallidar one of the capital planets of the human federation. The battle has epic proportions and you can see the huge alien destroyers bombing the surface of the planet. The humans don’t have any chance but they fight for their life.

Here you go. Some concepts for the ships. I used some cool grey markers and a rotring Graphic 0.1

I really like your concept work. The first sketch is very dynamic, try to translate that into the final image, but I think you should be careful to show the scale of the ships, by placing references next to them. Especially the fighter on the left needs some clear identification of size, maybe the pilot should be visible, or you could overlap ist with the destroyer below.
Bottom line: Very good start, keep going!

Nice to hear some constructive critics J.
t.fadrus: you’re right about the scale and proportions of the ships. The first image is just the base for the final artwork. I’m still playing with the composition..
Moon Dragon : you’re also right. But for the moment I’m trying to get something out from that mess. Just wait and see the colored sketch :P

Here is a two hours color concept. It’s not the final image :) this is just another sketch to see how the colors and composition work. You can see in the third image I had to enlarge a bit – Moon Dragon was right.
Hope you like it guys.

Well...this is my final concept for the artwork.. I have enough information to start the final piece.
I’ve made some big changes from the last version of the concept but I like it this way.
The destroyer is bigger so I can work on the details more, the planet’s surface is pretty ok, the colors and contrasts look ok, the composition has changed – flip horizontal – That's a HUGE change but works better for the composition.

Hi taz23,
a lot of action! > I like it
Suggestions:
Maybe it could be useful to give the planet an own characteristic color. At this moment the space and planet color are nearly the same. Regarding the composition I would think about placing one big spaceship or some little ones in section around the image.

Love your entry so far! Great feel for composition and overall balance.
One thing you could yet try: Show a direct attack of the gigantic destroyer ship. A classic approach to this would be some kind of laser beam hitting the planet, or you could do it more original. But still if you don't, the concept is already spectacular

Amazing designs and colorwork! It has a very organic feel to it somehow, i like it.
My only suggestion is to change the angle of the ship just below the large one- tilt it downward a bit maybe.

11-10-2004, 05:30 PM
Great drawing man!!
Indeed there is some kind of organic feeling about it!
Now that you flipped your image its much more impressive and epic i find.
Myabe it could be cool indeed to put some little starship-fighters coming into the screen from just behind us.
A little bit like we had a big platform just behind us with ships getting over passing over us.
Just an idea likee that.
Anyway Curious to see how you work out te colors(already great and dark!!!)
Later!!!

Now that the composition is over I have the proportions and the mood for the final work. It’s time for the real thing.
First thing: bringing more detail to the destroyer because it’s the nearest object to camera.
I used a transparent paper to copy the original shape of the ship and then I made a Xerox copy and add some shadows with grey markers.

I want the shell of the ship to have an organic feel so I used a texture made from trees. By using Transform – Distort from the Edit panel I’m arranging the texture on the surface of the shell.

Texturing complete and looking fine. With the Dodge Tool I’m highlighting the shape on the texture layer. It’s not from a light source, it’s just to see the shape of the shell better.

taz23

It's very simple Don_Barro. You take a txture on a new layer - go to the Edit button on top of the page - then you go to Transform - and press the Distort option. Now you can drag freely the the texture and deform it in eny direction. The shortcut to this operation is Ctrl+T and clik right on the mouse. Good luck on that. Tell me if you got it workin'.
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Good idea > pasting texture parts on the ship. this suits fine. The design of the ship developed really well. :)
Maybe it will be a little challenge to place the ship within your compostition because theres not very much lightning coming from upside. I´m looking forward watching your objects coming together.

I didnt read all of the thread, coz unfortunately i dont have much time (so if i repeat someone, ignore my suggestions)... I will sure follow ur process coz its very usefull to learn something from it and coz of ur great drawing/painting skills. I am just wondering, will u use ur "final concept sketch" composition or will u use the composition from ur "newconceptsketc"? Im more for the first choise coz there is just one big spaceship (a very good design btw:)) and all the others r there just to help feel the power and greatness of the main one. While at the "newcon..." there r too many big spaceships which fight for viewers intention. I think its a bit unstable and confusing... just my opinion.
Once again, ur work is amazing!

Taz -
Just wanted to say that I really love your spaceship concept. From the moment I first saw it, I just thought, "Wow, that reads as really large!" Partially, I think that's all the structure-work between the top- and bottom- hull, which almost reads like a whale's baleen mouth, which is, of course, huge! :-)
I've also really been enjoying your step-by-steps, too. Great work, keep i coming!

Will you keep the black lines of the original sketch ? Maybe we could see it less ...

Hello everyone.
NinjaASSN: The composition will always change in the process of creation. It’s just the balancing of elements that you use in your artwork: colors, concepts, perspective etc. to make it work.
Hi Atmospheria, watching your thread I’ve seen what you mean. You don’t have to change the subject of your composition just because I’m doing a similar theme. This just came in my mind when I first read the title of this challenge. This is one of those things that that you first think when doin’ a galactic battle. J I like what you’re doin’ so far. Keep it up!

Very nice pict. You succeed to put a large scale action in a "little rectangle".
I find the planet too clean, however : your ships are not realistic ( and I like it ), but the planet is ! The impression - it's personnal- is that ships are pasted on the background, breaking the homogeneity of the whole. Maybe you could redraw a little bit the planet ...
Anyway nice colors and great textures !

10x again guys for all the crits.
Arctis: The work is still in progress. I’m adding all the elements in the picture and compare them to the original sketch so I can get the same feeling I had when I made that first drawing. Stay close, still more to come.
project_god: What is LEXX? Is it a movie?
Kraull: 10x dude.
Amida: Yeah. That’s the feeling I want to get from this composition: huge ships moving slowly to the planet, destroying it as they go.
Speaky: Yes this method seems a bit technical. But this is just the way a want to do it. I didn’t want just another painted job. There are so many wais you can create an artwork. This is just one of them. And I hope this can help other guys out there to get their own style by combining different techniques.

hi Mihai..
undoubtly great work mate!
but i have few thoughts about your work.. maybe you can find something useful in them..
1. i think you may try to make your image wider.. something like wide screen movie.. around 2.4 aspect ratio should work fine i think..
2. move the planet closer and up.. this will reduce black area of the space which now is a bit large i think.. less rounded planet also will look better in my opinion.. this also gives you possibility to use planet's atmosphere to play with perspective.. and your destroyer will get more contrast on the planet reddish background instead of black background of the empty space..
3. engines are catching too much unneccessery attention because of high brightness.. again keeping them over planet they'll look not so bright..
well.. thats all what i had in mind.. :)
keep great work up and cheers!
P.S. about planet i'm pretty sure.. less rounded will look much better.. as well as you may add a lot of details on the planet if you move it closer..

wow is that dark. I loved your beautiful ship design, now all the detail is gone :hmm:
Maybe you can blow a ship up next to your main design (to illuminate it) snd have a huge chunk of the ship shearing off toward the viewer , plus it would help to create some tension. But I haven't read every single thread, so that may be your intention.

Kraull: 10x dude! There will be some dramatic changes in the composition. I'm still experimenting. I'm workin’ on some new ships so stay close.
techart: merci omule. I like your stile :) .
greentek: 1. It's a good idea to make it wider. I'm still experimenting with that because I wana put so many things in this artwork.
2. You're right about the black. It's too much for this composition. My first idea was to make a contrast between the big alien ship, the space and the planet. I did some experiments with the position of the planet. Works really well when it's up...but I'll try to bring the camera closer to the planet to see how it works. I have a feeling you’re right. This way I can add more details on the ground destruction.
3. Yes, the engines are catching your attention. It's because the main focus (so far) was the big alien destroyer. The contrast between the bright color of the engine and the black of empty space make you discover the rest of the destroyer shape.
10x man, your crits are very constructive. Hope you'll take time to visit again...it's very helpful. Keep rockin' your work :buttrock: I'm watching you
V_Shane: Yes, I wana put a burning human destroyer on the right. And tons of small alien fighters all over it. Hope that will bring some action for all the action fans :) .
Thank you guys for taking time to rite me your opinions. Hope you'll keep on doin' this because it's very helpful. When you work on your stuff you get stuck on some things and miss other important stuff. That's why I'm grateful to all of you guys. 10x again!

yo man, i really dig your style. it's starting to come along quite nicely. i don't know if anyone has mentioned this already or not. i love what's going on in the lower portion w/ the planet and all, but i think that the space is just black. it would be nice if you add some nebulas in there or something that had some color. space is full of color and i think it'll add a little more "oomffff" to this already amazing piece.

I don´t agree with stormeffex, about the black space.
Ok, the space is really full of colors, but only if you are looking through a telescope or something.
With naked eye, the space is black with tiny white points (Like a night with stars).
It´s more realistic and don´t 'fight' with the others elements in the picture.
But, it´s only my personal opinion.
*after all, nothing is wrong and everything is possible.:) *

One thing I like about the new format is the explosion of the vessel you added that take place far below the main battleships. One thing I'm not sure about is the new importance of the red color in your image. I think there was more contrast in the first composition with only the reactors with saturated red. Anyway, That's just my opinion and I'm quite please to see more area of your great scene!

11-22-2004, 03:16 PM
Hello guys. I'll talk a bit about this new format. My first idea was to create a dramatic scene where aliens destroy one of the human capital planets. In the landscape images there was this huge alien battle ship but there wasn't room for all the action that must take place here. So this was one of the solutions I had. This way I can add human and alien fighters, explosions and other stuff like that.
The big destroyer is still the main character in this composition. You have to see the original .PSD file with all the details...to know that. There are actually three frames in this composition. If you take the top the middle and the bottom of the image you'll get three frames. Most of the action takes place on the bottom so you have more types of action in one image. Well, this is the idea...I hope to accomplish everything in the final artwork. But thanks to all you guys this can be possible. 10x again for taking time to comment my work.

Wow, Taz, I didn't check on your thread for a couple of days and you've gotten so much done! The red colors in the planet below are just gorgrous! What a scene of chaos! Just teow small suggestions I have" I notice in the later images, you're pumping up the hilight on the top of the biggest ship a bit more. I'd merely suggest to keep pushing that further, as the more you have, the more it helps define that shape. Secondly, you might consider making the novas aroundd the exmplosions on the planetary surface brighter. They more than anything show the scale of the destruction of this conflict (to me, at least!) and I would hate to see them get lost among the rest of the similarly-colored planet.
Anyhow, wonderful work, great to see so much step-by-step from you!

Very very good! But I'd loose some space here. There is a bit too much dark part on the upper side of the pic. The composition would work better if u cut half of that space and resize the canvas... move those spaceships a bit lower... My thoughts and a suggestion.

The planet texture I prefer is on post n°112 (the one before the last one) : it's more precise.
One crits : the biggest ship on the right doesn't follow the perpective line - nose too low-

Great work...I love those spaceships far down below the viewer. Looking great. The only thing that bothers me is the front of the nearest spaceship aligning exactly with the planet's silhouette. It creates an unecessary focal point in my opinion. I don't know if you still have this spaceship on a separate layer, but perhaps you could shift the spaceship a bit upwards to fill some of that black space above (like you had in one of your previous posts).
Congrats on the wonderful work.

Hi Mihai,
very convincing work with great sense of detail and great colors. The explosion looks very good especially the vertikal shining light is nice.
There´s one thing that looks a bit strange to me. The angle of the ships at the bottom seem to follow different perspektive line. That´s just my impression I get by watching the image. Regarding the explosions on earth maybe you could add a thin line wich gives an indication about the flight-path of the weapon.

You've nailed everything perfectly. It goes without saying that the detail and scale are amazing, but I expecially appreciate the perspective. The ships at the bottom couldnt be at a more suited angle- most people seem to forget that theres no up or down in space, and things dont ride on a flat plane. Kudos to you on that.
And hell, I'd put that up as a poster :O

will have to agree with greentek on the roundness of the edge of the planet... also i want to expand on that the visiable (red glowing) parts of the panet seems to have little perspective looking at where your horizon is...
also a little idea i had, would we get to see any missiles/bombs being launched/dropped from the ships?

Hello everyone! Sorry for answering so late. I had a rough week on the set helping out the painters and the set decorators finish the job in time for the shooting.

The sense of epic-ness and scale definitely work towards your benefit. You can almost hear the drums of war in the background.
Personally I'd like to have a one of your main ships split apart in destruction for variation. Nothing as beautiful as destruction when it's ripped along the "seams".

this is looking impressive. I think I wouldn't submit the final version as a poster - better as a staright image (probably your intention). My only criticism is connected to teh placement of the ships, and it may be too late to try alternatives, but the composition seems odd to me. I think it'd be suited better to a landscape view. But perhaps that's just me. Otherwise, interesting mood and makes you curious what's going on.

Wow, Taz, I didn't realize that you were still working on this, I thought it was finished a month ago! Well, once you are, here are some thoughts: Overall, it's looking really nice... But then, it always has been one of my favorites. The exploding ship on the lower left: It feels relatively undetailed compared to everything else, and the red on the bottom makes it blend in with the background planet. Perhaps it could pick up some more hilights from the explosion to help pull it forward? And I find the cyan color of the fighter engines distracting: It's such a different color from everythign else int he piece that they just pull my eye away from all else. But maybe that's just me. anyhow, good luck with it, and glad you had fun working on your movie. Hope we'll get to see your art from that, too!
