Chih-Han Hsu has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=5155)

Latest Update: Final Image: Final Image

Iíve named the piece, ďReturning HomeĒ. Apart form the obvious meaning of a human revisiting Earth; it could also be interpreted another way. With nature being polluted by human, nature has forced man to leave the planet. And by leaving, man has returned their ďhomeĒ (Earth) back to nature. I\'m not really sure my self :) Itís really up to the viewer for some interpretation as well. I hope people will like it.

Hi I’m all new to cgtalk. I’ve finally finish my uni assessments and decided to give this competition a shot. I hope everyone could have heaps of fun in this and feel free to give a newbie like me any advices. Also thanks to those who already gave me a warm welcome.

Here’s the idea I have in mind:

Many years from now humans has left earth due to massive freezing (I watched day after tomorrow lately :)). Earth has been left in isolation in its frozen state killing almost all living forms except for some deep sea organisms, which over the years developed into a sophisticated civilization. They have learnt from the many of the things humans left behind (architecture, science etc.) and acquired great intelligence.

Years after the departure of man, human scientist has decided to revisit Earth (just like how scientists visit the Moon and Mars etc.) to discover a grand semi-organic city beneath the frozen surface.

The image that I’ll try to depict is an exploring submarine thing discovering the city under the ice for the first time.

This idea might tie in with the theme of space opera very loosely so please give me any feedback on this idea thanks.

This is a rough idea of the image that i currently have in my mind. I'm not sure if i want so many different forms of building in the background yet sice it could pull the focus away from the subject (the explorer). Feel free to give me feedback, thanks.

These are some concepts I did of the explorer. I'll try to keep the design more man made so it will stand out from the organic background. Not quite certain with the design yet, I might combine some elements from multiple concepts. I'll so play around with the color later. Feedbacks are most welcomed.

Daniel - good to hear positive feed back, I was a little iffy about the subject at first. Although it was only one person's point of view but I'm feeling better with the whole thing now.

ALL - I've done some more designs on the organic buildings and composition since last time. Hope you like it.

These are two designs i've currently done for the organic buildings. I'm considering not to have to many different forms in the background so in the end i might just use 1 or 2 designs with some alterations. I quite like the tall building but the round one still needs some refinement i think.

I thought i'll change the image to a landscape and a different arragement for the composition because i wanted to show the grand scale of the buildings. So i want a entire building somewhere in the BG and one up close and next to the explorer. The last once probably seem to cramped up.

Also I hope i'm not submitting too many scketches, sorry i'm a newbie. I guess the rate will slow down once i start modelling. :)

Great to heard positive stuff from you guys, sounds like i'm kinda heading in hte right direction. Or maybe you guys are just being nice :).

Anyway, i'm starting to playaround in 3ds max with materials and what i and what my computer can handle for the piece. Still experimenting cos i still want to maintain a sense of strength in the buildings while still being oganic in hte shape. Might be the matter of finding the right color, not quite sure yet.

Thanks for your feedback.

This is just a rough color study i did to work out the general look of the environment. The designs of the building and explorer (submarine) is still to be properly designed. I'm trying to work out a design to keep the buildings organic but still highly architectual and strong looking; currently thinking of using some elements of a lobster's shell. And thanks for the positive feedbacks.

hi! lot of cool stuff man!i think your way to work is geat! your posibility is endless ,maybe i have to sketch more befor jump to the final concept !
one thing is that your submarine seem to be too simple, or maybe it's just concept not detail yet , so keep going man!

monsitj: hey thanks for your comments. yeah the things still a color study at the moment. I've started to work on the designs of the buildings and sub in detail and is sorta half way though, i should post it up soon, just a little busy at this time.

Just a short update on the work in progress:
I want to make sure the color and design is all planned well (enough) before i start modelling. I will have to keep the piece simple but solid though since i'll need to leave the competition early to go on a overseas trip and i most likely won't have computer access . I'll try and keep some fine details in there, but focus more on the composition and design of things.

Anyway, thanks for all the feedbacks, and please come back sometime later to see more of my thread :)

This is just a bit of modelling for a bit of the buildings. The shape was inpired by a prawn shell... the geometry is kept fairly simple as other bits will be built to on to it later. Since the building is going to be big more details will be added in textureing. This is really not much of an update but here it is anyway.

This is an update to the organic building. It's still not finished but shouldn't be too far i guess. Some elements i might consider getting rid off depending on how "messy" it looks when things are textured or even if it just dosen't look right in the final image. Feel free to give me your comments.

This is a more detailed image of various parts of the building. At the moment i'm thinking of taking the wobbly tranparent bits(shown in the top image) off since there's atually some detail in the core and it's sort of a bit redundent. but i'll get some response from you guys first. I'll add more detail through displacement and bump maps cos i don't wanna slow my computer down with any more polys.

This is the complete building. I only added the little floating units around the previous building. I was going to have them hanging randomly of the base (expanded top bit) but it looked really messy so i just left them floating. Since for things to float in water without support isn't too strange anyway, i guess.

This is a test for the composition with the models, plainly just to see how the image would look without color and stuff. I was considering havingh te explorer smaller than seen in the image so the buildings might look more "grand" and the explorer being more vulnerable. But I thought that might be a waste to all the detail in the model :)

This is some parts of the building textured... because this building is some stange nonexistent thing i've been pulling my hairs out trying to find the color for it... i hope it looks ok. Gunilla (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=78228): Um about what i plan to do for the rest of it i'm not too sure yet. I orignally had in mind a mixure of a exotic blur lobster and some strange sea cumuber/jelly fish thing but that's too blurry to tackle so i'm sort of going very slowly fixing and rechanging etc...

ALL: I was thinking of making it full of patterns and different color patches but it looks too messy and is sort of destroying the model so i thought of keeping the thing in a general blueish color. But have enough color to standout of the backgroud while still not stealing the show away from the explorer (the focus of the image). I though if i need any extra color i would do it though self-illuminated spots on the buildings (like some glowing plant/organism thing).

Any comments are very welcomed, it might just open my minds a little.:) vbmenu_register("postmenu_1776949", true);

This is a bit more to the texturing, the majority of the textures are there but might not be final... still playing around. I plan to make some areas self-illuminated and glowing to lighten things up a bit but that's later.

I was thinking of putting some variation in the shape and textures in the "stem" bit of the building since it looks a little stiff and artificial...

And just a notice i will be going on an overseas trip in 2 days so i might have to leave the competition since i won't have a computer with me for 2.5 months. If i'm lucky i might be about to borrow a computer or buy a laptop (which i would love) then i might complete this piece. Other wise is might just have to finish it some other time :)

Oh - that would be really sad if you couldn't get to finish this - really one of my favourites. Even if you can't finish it for the challenge - do finish it later - it's just to good to become one of those thrown-aways

Yes I agree, would be a terrible waste, but I'm keeping the faith! This should get you an award!

Cheers!

Hi, I manage to get a computer oversea. I got it on Saturday so i'm gonna have to rush this piece together now. I don't have net connection at home so i haven't been submitting stuff frequently, sorry . I don't think i'll model too much more stuff but just finish off what i have already and try make the best out of that. anyway i'm gonna submit more stuff soon. Also does anyone know if the image could be in any format? Like any proportion, like really long or something?

This is the texturing of the jelly building (some what like a lamp) thing. At the moment i'm sort of just rushing to finish the image off so i don't really have time to refine stuff. anyway feel free to gimme comments, i might not have time to fix things up though sorry.

This is the 3D layout update. I change the composition a bit. The image looks a bit dodgy but you know it's just a layout.

This is the texturing of the explorer. I've decided to name the explorer "Boomerang" since it's a trip back to earth. I've tried to keep the design simple and clean for now since time is running so short. Comments are welcome.

The texture is ok, maybe it should be more worn off, older, or leaking somewhere.

Hey - good to see you back on track - here's my wishes for your completion.

Also does anyone know if the image could be in any format? Like any proportion, like really long or something?

Yes, as far as I've understood, it can - but it has to be in highresolution no matter proportions.

The ship is really cute - it will be a nice contrast to the organic shapes. Good luck

This is the last of the models for the piece. I basically referenced some images of ice bergs and tried to achive the same sorta look. I hope it looks alright.

For the lighting I fake global illumination by the old trick of spreading out many spotlights in a dome shape. I then added in one stronger spot light for a subtle directional lighting. I didnít want to have a very shape light since the ice surface should defuse the light fairly evenly in the whole scene.

Some lights not yet added in this image are the ones on the explorer (the head lights and tail lights). These Iíll add later. Atmospheric lighting Iíll also add separately.

This image isn't really a proper render, it's sorta bit and pieces that i put together to show the lighting only.

For my rendering I chose to split up my image into many layers and render them separately because my computer wouldnít be about to render the whole lot at high dpi :). But itíll gimme more flexibility in post to make adjustments.

I also render various elements with each render. The elements include: defuse, lighting, shadow, specular, and z-depth. These Iíll use in the composite to correct imperfections in my render.

I also added some particles to the scene, to give the image more depth and some bubbles to the end of the submarine to suggest some movement.

The composite is completed with lighting and shading adjustments on the original render, atmospheric effects via a z-depth render, and some depth of field was also added using the z-depth image. I rendered atmospheric lighting separately with proxy models and added it to the composite to save time, as rendering atmospheric stuff to the full model would be too expensive.

Some brightness and contrast was also adjusted selectively to some areas just to give the subject more focus and stuff like that.

I'm naming the piece "the return", just to keep it simple. I've thought of other names but it sound tacky, so i guess simple is better. To leave more room for the viewer's interpretation. I hope people will like it.

thanks for the good feedback. I just managed to get the piece done. It's a real rush though so i didn't get time to fix things up and refine the image a little. I would have liked to have a some more time to look it over and tweak it some more but i guess i should be happy that i got the final image on time. :applause:
