Hi folks

Please check out my latest animation and let me know what you think. It's a 30 second motion test with a lo-res character. It was inspired by a scene from Iron Giant and I'm mainly trying to show force and weight with some acting.

Awesome.
I jumped into this thread and clicked on the link without even reading what you had to say.
And as i was watching it i thought " man that reminds me of the iron giant."
Then i went back and read what you had to say and i felt better. :)
I think the iron giant was a GREAT movie and should have gotten way more credit and recognition than it actually did.
and a crit.
One thing i noticed right away is that when sally went into her slide she looked like she pushed herself along to slide that far.
was this what you were going for?
thats the only thing i have to say about this cause it is awesome otherwise.
The gag worked well at the end. I like this piece.
see you around man

Thanks SquirrelBoy

You're spot on about Sally's slide to be honest. There's so much of this sort of thing in toons that I couldn't resist putting it in. I tried the slide several different ways and it just looked better to me when I sped up the action (she slides faster than she skips as you noticed). Also the skip is cycled in the animation mixer while the rest is normal f-curve animation and I had a few problems smoothing out the transition - I'm still trying to figure out the best way to use the mixer.

Cheers

I like that a lot! Humorous ending, nice touches - like stroking the lever with her finger as she considers it... very fun!

You said you were trying for weight. I think she's a little bouncy, but not by much. Maybe there is something about a habit you've got in forming the curves on your graph when you animate? It isn't a problem, more of a style, I think.

Again, I still think it's great. The only thing I'd look at again is the sneak up to the lever. It's very demonstrative, rather than sneaky... almost like she's pretending to sneak, even though she doesn't care who sees it. What if, on the second step of the sneak, she leans into it and slides surreptitiously to the lever? It might break up the bounciness I'm feeling.

I hope these comments help. I still think it's a very humorous, fun piece. :applause:

Take care.
