View Full Version : stability of Painter 9
Hi,
How stable is Painter 9 compared to the older versions. I have severe problems with Painter 8 on Windows XP. From searching around a bit I think it's a well known problem. Painter crashing while saving a file. Can anyone tell me how version 9 is behaving? If this problem is solved it would be worth the upgrade alone. About 3 weeks ago I had to redo an image about 5 times. It took me a whole day and made me very sick. It's a bit stupid but it made me so fearful that I started using Photoshop more and more for painting stuff.
Thanks alot,
Arjo.

Arjo,
For Painter 8, go to the Sticky thread at the top of the list of forum threads and read the thread named Keeping Painter 6, Painter 7, and Painter 8 Running Smoothly.
In Painter IX the Pre-built Brush File is limited in file size to a maximum of 200 MB and the idea is that you won't have to delete it.
In either version, use File > Save As instead of File > Save and save your painting in a numbered series of files so if something goes wrong, you can return to the last saved version and not lose all of your work.
In Painter IX, use File > Save As to save the file the first time, then use File > Iterative Save and following files will be named with numbers following the filename. For example:
mypainting.rif (the first save using File > Save As)
mypainting001.rif (the second version saved using File > Iterative Save
mypainting002.rif (the third version saved using File > Iterative Save

In my experience Painter 6 was the instable version... still i preferred it over Painter 8, simply because of speed. I learned to save often :D
Painter IX seems to be extremely stable, and hasnt crashed a single time for me yet :D :D
Thanks for the replies, I did read the sticky thing about keeping painter stable. But in my case I did the iterative save trick but it didn't help as it would crash at every save attempt. My pbf wasn't that big yet. Maybe it was the size of the file about 100 x 80 cm @ 100dpi containing 3 layers. But still I think it's ridicule to have to save numbered versions because the sw isn't stable. IMO they should just fix it. Well the answers about V9 made me hopeful. I'll buy it anyway.
One other question about activation: On how many computers can you activate it? I'm asking this because I've a problem with Photoshop which can only activated on two machines. It's not that I'm working with several people I'm on my own. But I've got a clean room with my main computer, beside that I've got my laptop. This is pretty standard. But in my studio where I use real oilpaint :) I've got an older machine to do little sketches and stuff while I'm painting.

Well, interesting. I got Painter 9 a little over a week ago. Mostly, I LOVE it compared to 7. The interface is much easier to work with, and it IS much faster, etc. However, it just crashed on me. It was acting a little funny (starting brushes with white paint, even though white wasn't on the palette - the layers menu wouldn't expand vertically) then blotto. Luckily, because of it's past instability, I save a .psd file (where I lay in my flat color) and then a 1 and 2 version of my Painter file (as a .psd too). I save to both every time I save. Yes, it's a hassle, but better safe than sorry - and it's just shown me I need to continue doing that. So, better, yes - perfect, no.

I don't understand what your talking about, I've got Painter 8 from day one and it crased only once (I have Win XP Home). Painter 9 demo still hasn't crashed on me wet(I'm hoping it last).

If your brushstroke begins with white on transparent areas of a Layer, it's because the brush variant has blending and smearing characteristics. Solution:
Move the Resaturation slider (Resat slider in the Property Bar) all the way to the right, or
Paint on the Canvas or paint on existing color on a Layer, or
Use a brush variant that doesn't have blending and smearing characteristics, or
Check the Pick Up Underlying Colors box at the top of the Layers palette (know that this can be a problem if you later add other Layers below that Layer with different colors/contrasting colors below those colors that were previously picked up from underlying Layers or the Canvas, so plan ahead carefully if you decide to do this).
the layers menu wouldn't expand vertically)
<SNIP>
Tear the Layers palette off the other docked palettes, then click and drag the lower right corner of the Layers palette to expand it.

Thanks! I think you nailed some of the issues I was having.

I got these problems when I was working with files at about 350 Mb.
