INT. ARGENTIA - DINNING HALL

GIMGUR, ARAMAN, BOB, and KEN are seated at a chivalrous table dressed for a feast. Everyone is quiet at first.

ARAMAN
Gimgur, how long has it been?

GIMGUR
Three Argentian Years. But not to worry. On the morrow you shall return to the others.

ARAMAN

But three years...my Family?

GIMGUR
Time on Argentia is not the same as on your world. On Earth time waits for no man but here time is on our side. Eat my friends eat.

Only moments ago they were eating together, and then heard the sound of the Great Horn. Suddenly, they find themselves standing back on the Argentia Plateau in the Courtyard of The Great Hall.

EXT. ARGENTIAN PLATEAU - GREAT DAIS

Gimgur stands behind them. They look ahead and see The Great Dais, the Holy Place of the TQ. Vigil and the other TQ walk toward it. Above the Dais, the Sky opens revealing a beautiful and majestic Golden Light. Below the Dais, emerging from the center are three dry River Beds. They look to Gimgur for an explanation.

GIMGUR
They are three rivers that flow from the Heart of a TQ. Love, Courage, and Hope. It is time for your Accolade. Do not be afraid. Go now, the others are waiting.

Araman shakes Gimgur's hand. Gimgur grasps his forearm. Ken and Bob follow. Gimgur smiles. They turn and walk toward the Great Dais. Stepping onto the Outer Ring of the Great Dais, they are humbled. A strange stillness surrounds them. Looking across to the Center Dais they see Vigil and the others waiting for them separated by an Inner Ring of Pure Water. Bob swings his arms and then dives in. Ken and Araman smile and then follow.

They swim across to the Central Dais and get out. The Golden Light surrounds them. They remove their helmets and kneel down with the others. An ANGELIC BEING appears. Bob, Araman, and Ken are dubbed TQ.

ANGELIC BEING
Kenneth Rance. Araman Nod. Robert Snedeker. Behold the First Swords of the TQ. Take them.

The Being presents three TQ Swords.

ANGELIC BEING
I give you the Right to Bear Arms and the Power to Meet Justice. Arise and go to now. Your faith will be your path to valor.

They receive their Swords, kneeling in gratitude and amazement. The Three Rivers flow forth from the center of the Great Dais. All rise together.

FADE TO WHITE.

hm amazing story, not sure i quite understand it but it sure sounds like take from a great epic sci-fi story :)

If i understand it right Ken and Bob are from earth and have somehow passed the limit to this other galaxy or dimension where they receive these swords and gratitude from this people on the other side? Have they maybe been called upon from earth to solve som critical task?

Like in the ancient saga's where brave warriors were summoned to slay the dragon :)

Like in the ancient saga's where brave warriors were summoned to slay the dragon :)Wow, yes JohanL, you guessed it! The story is excerpted from a feature film screenplay I wrote entitled "TQ." I started creating conceptual art for the project, as well as have gathered some other talent (http://cosmicorigins.com/tq/film-tq-crew.htm) such as the "Guardians of the Earth" to create soundtrack elements, and a potential director of photography such as Daron Keet. The space opera challenge is a great opportunity to push myself into creating some 3D art. The inspiration in these forums is a force to be reckoned with! :) Thank you for the insightful post, and I will be watching you too.

Thanks for the encouragement "asela"! You see, I was lurking for a while on the CG Network forums, and all the wonderful work being done by all of you was so inspiring to me. I had written a space opera screenplay, and so the call to become a part of it became very clear. Sci-fi has always been very close to my heart, and I cannot recall a better time in history for artists to be proactive in their dream. The Judges have done an excellent job in getting us all into leveraging each other's imagination, and pushing each other a little more at a time, and this is one of the most constructive communities I have seen (and I visit a lot of them) so I'm humbled to be a new member, and will do my best to inspire you as well. :)

very epic indeed, SF meets Fantasy. it makes this project very promising.
I like the bright colours in the concept, haven't seen many bright scenes yet, people tend to stick to darker themes.

anxious to see where this goes

That looks like a really large undertaking Daniel. That nightstar concept looks wicked. Is that a render or the 2D illustration? Looks really fantastic, but in all honesty I'd lose the name on the hull. I've always felt really magnificent peaces of machinery wouldn't require there name imprinted on them. They aren't cars of today. I think that it would be so well known that it would be instantly recognisable without the logos and stuff. Sort of like that space ship from douglas adams works. Wasn't it just pure black and thats it? I guess what I mean to say is that if the swords don't have names on them, then neither should the ship. Unless its mass manufactured.

Lookin' good.

Daniel, I have to say that I like your concept as it includes the major themes that are expected from this Grand Space Opera Challenge. Such as Myths, Legends and advanced civilizations. I appreciate how you've used 'pure water' as we all know water supports life and the symbolism that I've interpreted from your excerpt when they swim to the central dias is a form of 'cleansing' which could be related to a religious ritual from the ancient past.

I like the harmony that the scene displays with the natural world, the advanced accomplishments of the inhabitants in regards to the Time Ships, Great Dias and the halls to the right of shot that give a feeling of ancient wisdom and a culture that appreciates and understands the power of the natural world. Maybe I've got it all wrong, Daniel. But that's what I percieve from your 1st colourful sketch and I look forward to seeing it finished in its final splendour. Keep up the good work.

Daniel, I'm a professional writer, so I really can appreciate your story and the neatness of your screenwriting. I'll stick around to see how this progresses. How's the feature movie going?

Some time ago I sold the rights of one of my short stories. They wanted to make a animated short (right now I don't know if it will be released, it's a while that I don't have any news) and this was the real boost to my 3D addiction, watching them work I felt the desire to explore further this world and, in a few months, I left Bryce, started with Cinema4D and...

Ah ok, yep, this is your thread. Sorry for the ranting, LOL... but, when I find someone that can write and can do great 3D graphics, I always get a bit carried away.

Impressive portfolio.

Thanks for your feedback on my work, might I say that your drawing of the ship is fantastic. As a critique i would perhaps take out some of the smaller facets round the bottom of the design, but then that's just down to personal taste I suppose. It's very industrial looking at the moment, perhaps simplfiying the shape a bit would give it a more advanced feel? I'm only criticising because were supposed to though, my first impression was one of complete envy at your illustrator skills. (is it illustrator?)

This is the design for the ships depicted as parked next to the Great Dais on Argentia. This one is called "Nightstar" and they are a "Timeship" class approximately 10 stories tall. They have an incredible interior filled with mechanisms built by the ancient Argentia and Kurosian civilizations.

Excerpt from the "TQ" script...

INT. NIGHTSTAR

The interior of the Nightstar is hollow and extends upward at steep angles for fifty stories. It is Cathedral-like, a myriad of Futuristic Gothic Architecture with finely detailed columns and archways, majestically illuminated up to The Master Time Clock. They walk towards the Dais. It is like a giant ring. Looking down through the center are four giant Engines, another series of lower levels, and two landing bays. Suddenly the Dais Platform they are standing upon begins to raise up.

KEN
What's happening?

BOB
We're being lifted up towards that thing.

Bob points to the Master Time Clock above them. It seems to come to life, rotating and filling with energy. Shiny Metallic Arms extend down beneath it revealing four frozen figures wearing futuristic Armor, and one of them wearing a Forties era suit and hat. They appear like sculptures embossed in the Metallic Arms. The Dais stops. The Arms fully extend, glow intensely, and then stop.

I like the intricate, details design of the Time ship. Very majestic indeed.

I can almost imagine it has a golden, metallic color with a glowing, pulsating orb in the center as it launches into the night sky and phase out of time. I'm looking forward to seeing your completed model and your color scheme. Good job.

:) Just my logical deduction from reading your detailed description of the time ship.
Time ship usually phase out from current time as it transition to another time period.
The round thing in the center looks like an orb. Is it the master time clock, or is it the small one near the tip? I bet It'll take time to model this intricate time ship.

[QUOTE=Daniel McMillan]Thank you Leonartdo! How on Earth did you know that it phases? :O How did you know that was the Orb? Hmmm.... very curious indeed.

haha - you mean your building looks like my ship! I designed the Nightstar in 1987 (see "What is TQ" (http://cosmicorigins.com/tq/film-tq_about.htm)) being drafted out on a very large peice of vellum. I put her in a tube all these years until an actual screenplay was written. I have a bunch of other very unique designs in a flat file that go with the TQ project. Thanks for the c&c.

Ok, a basic lighting and object layout with textures off. The flat plane will be translated into the Nightstar Timeship, and the large dark torus in the sky is the beginnings of "the sky opening up" as described in the TQ script.

Tif's work great for Image Alpha in MAX, and so using a square plane, we can get an idea of the work we need to do on the 'Nightstar" and begin to see if the scene is working.

i was very impressed by your sketch of 'Nightstar'.. but so long time there was no updates in your thread that i've missed great stuff!
your compositional layout looks great my friend! for me it's very ballanced..
but most impressive on the current stage is sky..
it looks to me that there are rounded clouds?! they look simply great! how did you make them? can you share some basic aspects of technique you're using?
i have to do something similar for my composition but i have never seen such technique of making a sky and clouds..

Hi there Daniel, very nice progress! The composition is as greentek said well balanced. I would stay with it. Maybe only I would do a test with the camera being even lower. I can see the small guy in the right side, I understand that it's a test to show the scale. How about putting the camera on the eye position? Not sure if it works, but ou can try. The very good point of your composition is the real feeling of the grand scale... with better grass(this one was made probably only for tests) and a little bit of the distance fog, it will be graeat:thumbsup: good luck, I'll be watching your progress

Hi Daniel!

Great background story... it captures the suggestive and the mythical while retaining a certain purity and simplicity that seem all but gone from today's imaginarium...

It also reminds me of alternate worlds where we all go exploring sometimes, like H.P. Lovecraft's character (and possibly alter ego...) Randolph Carter, an ordinary man on earth, but a hero in the realm of dreams...

I also appreciate the planned and methodical approach you are taking here, but it should be expected from someone with your production experience...

As for the picture, I feel it's early to tell, as it seems to me that you are still in the visualization phase, and are more concerned about concept and composition. I really like your last angle, but the foreground seems a bit empty... perhaps you could create some gardens with some interesting hedge patterns along the streams... just a thought.

Also, I have the same feeling for the background(considering your 2D concept). A faraway mountain range or other interesting but subtle terrain feature would go a long way in bringing depth to your piece imho...

And that's it! I'm eager to see the final result

Oh, btw, congrats on your portfolio and I just loved your "treasure chest"... bookmark-a-must!!!

Great idea with the clouds! very nice, clever and what is mostimportand good looking and simple. I have an idea, render it separetly with the ground(without any objects), than paint over the outer borders off this simple geometry, so that it look as the unity with the surrounding sky... than add rendered objects... I hope you getwhatI mean...

The sky is great and the point of view better than in your previous updates.
Still I think that the pyramidal object shouldn't be on the same plane as the strange circular building.

The colors and mood are very promising !

Good luck !

Someone asked me about the technique used for the clouds. It is two poly models textured with hand-painted clouds.
hi Daniel..
i asked you about technique used for clouds.. thank you very much for explanetion.. i'll try this technique in my current work.. though i can't paint good textures in photoshop i'll use procedural ones..
keep great work up and cheers..

Beautiful work! I love the ship design and the sky is coming along nicely!

I'll be interested to see how you handle the ring and how it's visual importance in the finished work weighs against the ship. It's a challenging composition but I'm looking forward to your solution! The progress is enticing so far...

Great work...
