“What’s that over there?” Cried Jotham as the ship ran ashore.

A blue glint in the distance had caught his eye.

Jotham was an explorer, he had travelled far to get here. Many dismissed the rumours as myth, but Jotham was not easily swayed.

“Could this be it?” He said, dusting off the find.

“Poseidon”

A large crystal, too heavy to carry lay in the sand before him. It shone with a light brighter than the heavens themselves.

The myth of Poseidon was one long told in Jotham’s homeland. A dark tale of wealth, power, betrayal. And of death. Long considered to be Merely a cautionary tale told to scare children, Jotham always believed otherwise.

He ran back to the ship and grabbed some raggedy rope to tie around the artefact. As he began to hoist it backwards he became hesitant, the implications where troubling. But nevertheless, he felt this something he must do.

He took the crystal to the wisest men of the lands, who with careful study informed him that this object, this object of supposed myth contained the very knowledge and power of the gods themselves!

With this discovery he vowed that he would create a civilisation of nobility, of wisdom. And so the city of Atlantis was born.

Jotham gathered together the finest leaders of the land and created a chamber of elders to rule the city.

Centuries passed and the crystal provided the inhabitants of Atlantis with many blessings, eternal life, wealth, science. In time the city towered larger than any other and rested upon the ocean itself.

But Jotham was not happy. The inhabitants of Atlantis had changed, greed and power had begun to corrupt them. Soon the other elders decided that with there power they could conquer the world itself.

Fearful of what he had created, Jotham journeyed to the highest tower of Atlantis and thrust his dagger into the crystal, destroying its power and the technology it fueled.

As the city gently sank into the ocean, the elders gathered around the crystal to see what could be done, but it was hopeless.

Many escaped to the stars to begin anew. But the elders, remorseful of what they had become remained in the chamber, and accepted their fate.

Still very rough at the moment, working on it!

Thanks for the welcome Fahad. :)

hey, nice concept you got going on ... though, maybe it needs to be in space? you can just change the setting and it'll stay just as good (even better, since this is what the challenge asks for)

back to the concept:

i think it's great, i can see lots of rubble falling from the ceiling, and we wittness this from inside the chambre (and perhaps looking out into space?)

maybe people trying to escape (except for the elders)?

like the mantle/table and crystal, though maybe even exaggerate the size of the crystal compared to the people, make it huge! it is symbolically, might as well illustrate that symbolism physically (artistic license)?

anyways, keep up the good work!

Should make water inside the room, slowly filling the chamber up.

Thanks for your comments!

though, maybe it needs to be in space? you can just change the setting and it'll stay just as good (even better, since this is what the challenge asks for) I think you're right, I've adjusted the story so that alot of them escape to the stars which would mean that this marked the beginning of a galactic civilisation. So I could show a bunch of ships escaping through the large window.

Honestly I prefer it where they all die but I should really stick with the contest theme. :D

hey man, you're very good. those are really nice models you've got there ...

one area to work on:

the ears, specifically the area nearest to the face, it looks like the ear has been glued on rather than blended into the head. (i.e. it looks like the ear is a forign object) hope that makes sence. also the top part of the nostril, looks a bit like it's been pinched from the inside of the head, though perhaps it'll look ok when it's finally textured.

keep it up.

cheers

Hey guys, haven’t updated for a while. I’m back to work now. :)

Made a start on the body, I’ve modelled him straight into his pose to make the wrinkles easier to model. Not entirely happy with him at the moment, any suggestions for improvement? :)

I've put together a very rough render to get an idea of how it's all fitting together. I'm redesigning the exterior at the moment, please ignore the horrible buildings I put in the concept. :)

Fahad

hey eagle, i'm glad you updated, was getting worried that you might have forgotten ;)

the model of the old man looks great, my only crit would be that the shoulder doesn't look natural (maybe a little too rounded and/or large).

and since he's old, i wouldn't give hime the stance you've given him now.

meaning: the back of the man should have a long curve, instead of a sharp curve at the bottom of his back (now his stance looks like that of a young and healthy man in his 20s or 30s) and even if they had superior medical technology, his age would still show in his stance.

hope this makes sence.

keep it up.

cheers

Some nice work here Jason....................I agree on the shoulder,it's pretty minor.I think the scene should still be opened up a touch at least.Widen up the room a bit,and then make the window/opening even wider, opening up the skies and BG even more so........Jut some thoughts for you........All in all you are doing some nice work here,I like it.......Keep it up.........

The material has a very "heavy" look to it which i like alot, do you know what I mean by that? The way it's rippled and stuff. Infact it reminds me of the bit in Star Wars where Hans Solo is encased in lead, or frozen or whatever.

Yes! It starts to look very impressive! I see that you changed their poses a little bit and now they look very natural! What renderer did you use? I think that the lams on the sides are too bright and they catch viewer's eyes too much.

Looking good!

You may want to throw a bit of rim light on the two figures on the left and right from the wall sconces. It's hard to guage the darkness of the piece without the BG element... so far it looks great!

nice work!

I made a start on the exterior, I decided to go with a stormy setting so I may have to relight the main scene.

I wanted to make a large Metropolis on the outside but the building these guys are in is supposed to be the tallest in the city. I was thinking of maybe just showing the tops of a few buildings poking out of the water to make it look more like it's sinking, what do you guys think? :)

Impressive my friend! impressive! But I think tha thise buildings should be more in the distance. It would be sasier to make real wave splashes on them.

I like it! Maybe some tips on the water shader?

Eagle_e7
12-15-2004, 09:06 PM
Thanks arturro. :)

I agree about the buildings being more in the distance, I was thinking of maybe having one of them falling over or something.

The water is actually just a blinn shader textured with some photographs of water in my bathtub! It's modelled using a poly plane and sculpting tools. :)

Great work so far! I just found out your thread (the competion has grown incredibly!) I like the thin balance of vast and peaceful, stormy sounds and air compared to the silence inside!
Modelling so far works pretty fair to the concept and quite clean!!

Agree with arturro and Lelantos on give some splashes to the outside buildings. Also I think adding some variation to the buildings' forms might work, on the other hand it might ruin some of the balance of the image.....

Wishing the best on your effort, and have a really really happy relaxing holidays!

PS: I don't think you've closed this page already.....I think some refinements are in your mind , consiously or unconsiously, waiting for the right time to come to surface....you still have almost a month for some tweaking....I would do...my fingers are itchy!!!

bravo! I think it's great. But why not some more tests. You always have this image to submit as final. You can play with the horizon, I think the water should dissapear in the far, far distance.

You told me how you did the water, but I still am wondering how you got so real result:)

well, what to say more... congratulations! you have my vote:)

terraarc: Thanks! haha, you're right, I'm bound to find things I need to tweak. :D

d-tox: Thanks very much! :)

yunisirees: Thanks man! :D

keetmun & arturro: Thanks very much guys! here's how I made the seawater: :)

The sea itself is just a polygon plane with a few lumps on it that I modelled with sculpting tools. The texture on the ocean is made from some pictures that I took in my bathtub, heheh :D

Here they are: (Feel free to use these if they're of any use)

http://jmaguire.co.uk/Temp/Water_Pictures.rar (http://jmaguire.co.uk/Temp/Water_Pictures.rar)

I then used some dirtmaps and put them together to look like this:

http://jmaguire.co.uk/Pictures/OceanUV.jpg

And that's pretty much it! I applied the texture to a blinn shader and used it as a spec map aswell. :)

wow.. excellent atmosphere!! is the rain 3d? if so is it difficult? I know your image is final, but the centre character is it above the floor?

great work!

hydrocell: Thanks! The rain is actually just a Photoshop brush, not sure if the character is above the floor. I'll take a look at it. :)

keetmun: Thanks! :D

Virtuoso: Thanks very much for for your kind words! :)

tzktime: Thank you!

I really like your image, but are you planning on putting in more dealing with the Space theme? By the way, your water and rain look great.

Hi, your image is very cool, i like the technique you have use. But I think the subject is not that strong to be an Space Opera. I mean that scene easily could happen in Earth. But CONGRATULATIONS, IT IS A GREAT IMAGE.

I am happy that I was selected. But I have to say that there were so many great artists that couldn't get the result they expected although they deserved it .Also it was so likely that those who got the award couldn't be successful at all;I mean it is a matter of taste and other factors. Therefore,we shouldn't take much pride in our acheivements nor be dissappointed with the result.See you all in other challenges and good luck!.
