I have a copy of Max 5, but I am wary of installing it just yet (I'm currently running 4.2). The reason is that at school we are still using 4.2 and there hasnt been any mention of upgrading in the near future. I heard a rumor that max 5 files can be opened in max4 as the app is "backwards compatible". Is this true or is it just wishful thinking?

its wishful thinking. BUT Bobo is coming to the rescue with a maxscript solution 'back from five'. Check it out at:

As Cartman would say "Dammit you guys, that is so sweet."

But shame on discreet for not adressing this issue in the commercial release. What were they thinknig!!?

They were thinking "marketing" I guess. Now everyone has to upgrade. Unless they know of Bobo's script.

They were also thinking that its bloody hard to write backwards compatable stuff.

We are luvky with apps like PShop, Freehand and Illustrator which save things backwards to whatever version you require. But even this will cull out what isnt supported.

Can you imagine saving a Max 5 file and opening it in 4 only to find that some feature youve based your scene on isnt supported.?

I think a big thanks should go out to discreet for at least making most plugins comptable for this release of max....though I cant help thinking that means that there wasnt much work done on Max ;)

but hey, Discreet have Bobo, so what do they care :D

Thanks for the flowers guys, but I have to jump in - BFF is cool, but it is just another exporter like ASE, OBJ, 3DS, FBX etc. It supports some features and doesn't support others. It is far from full MAX scene support, it gives just slightly more than other export formats. In the moment, it has no animation support at all (coming later). I made it to get mesh data from 5 to 3 and it does this nicely, but does not provide the comaptibility .MAX files would provide.

I don't blame discreet for not providing MAX scene compatibility back to 4. It is a difficult thing to keep the .MAX file format compatible in the one direction already.

Just to make it clear, nobody at discreet knew I was writing this (it was an in-house project for my daily job and helped me and some other people alot) Even if they would know, it wouldn't affect their development.

OT, please try out TMG 0.4.0 with SimbiontMax and report any bugs you find - I am not getting enough feedback, but I know there are lots of things that need fixing. Thanks in advance.

TMG would be treeMatoGraph right.?

I had a play in 4 but I havent yet tried it in Max 5.
Or with Simboint. From what I saw it was potenialy amazing.

Ill have a play in the coming weeks.

When I said discreet have Bob what do they care.....I meant I personally feel that discreet rely too much on people like you (who are our heros for this) to finish off alot of their stuff.

Before I regulary sifted through the discreet forums I didnt know of 90% of the resources avalible out there for max. The general user base of Max will never know about alot of the things you guys have done.

The people who find these out are the ones who spend time entering the CGcommunities. But there are thousands and thousands of people who dont do that, not just cause they dont want too, but because they dont know to or dont have the time too.

Anyway thats just my feeling...Im burnt out and streesed at the moment so Ill rant about anything at the moment, so just that most of what I say with a grain salt Like most people do anyway

Keep It up Bobo:thumbsup:
