View Full Version : MotherBoard - Broken? help...please.
nervouselk 11-07-2004, 09:47 AM Ok I was using my computer the other day and it suddenly shut off on me. Now when I turn it on everything sounds like its still working (hard drives, graphics card etc) but the motherboard is very silent. It usualy beeps on boot up, but no longer. The keyboard light up sequence doesnt work also. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could test this or try and make it work? There is no bios to enter as it doesnt get that far so iam guessing it is the board else it would. The board is an ASUS p4p800 with intel p4 3ghz and 1gbram. Thanks if anyone can help.

hi,
i've heard a lot bad things about this particular mobo... many people complain about it and there seem to be lots of issues with it. anyway, i guess that BIOS is 'dead'. if that's the case, you can fix it yourself if you know someone with exactly the same motherboard, or just go to the store where you bought it and they'll deal with it.

you seems to have a serious problem... my computer did also shut down when i were working yesterday, but i just started it again and it worked fine...
about your problem, you saying that you cant even enter bios ?
Have you checked all cabels ?
One thing you could test is to reset bios by clearing the flash on the motherboard... to do that you will need to move a jumper on the motherboard... but iam not sure if that would help thou...
The thing is almost anything can cause a problem like that.

Well I have tested the graphics card and harddrive, both work fine in a different system. All the leads and power cables are in correctly and since it had been working for months i can't see that as the problem. So it "must" be the motherboard. I have no problems with this motherboard really, all the options seem great so I have no complaints, just that I wish I could narrow down the reason and resolve it. Dont have the cash to just buy another board but I REALLY need to use the computer

Thanks Dirty, thank link really helped!
Seems the heatsink fan is too tight, as undoing this meant the board booted. Although I dont understand why it has taken months for the board to complain about this.

Ok so I was wrong. It did work by doing that, and now it is broken again! even if I loosen the heatsink. Hope the processor isn't broken now! So back to the start again.
Have you tried another powersupply?
Have you tried using just one stick of ram at a time?
Have you unplugged all non vital components? (hard drive, sound card, cd, various other stuff that you dont need..) Just have psu video cpu (WITH HSF :P) ram and mobo connected.

tried the hard drive and graphics card in another machine and they worked. Will try the one ram stick and card and drive tonight, but think it may be worse than that :( it has worked a few times and seemed to be when i released the pressure of the fan from the cpu, but now it doesnt work at all. The psu is fine as its not very old and a big powerfull thing which fires everything up.

Hi, Just to update you, I have tested the CPU and mother board in a different machine, and it looks like the motherboard is Kaput! god knows how, but i think it may have something to do with the heatsink mounting bracket with excessive pressure being applied.
