my question is, "Why does it look like claymation, rather than more real?"
other than that i ma happy with it.

good question...
I think it's partly to do with the animation, it's very 'stop motioney'. The movement looks as if it's going linearly between keyframes, try and smooth out the curves, or exagerrate the curves more. Adding a bit of followthrough and anticipation can only help matters. I know it's machinery but even so it wouldn't move as cleanly as that. Also it might help if you offset the movement of the two arms, even by a few frames to give it more life.
Secondly because everything is matt it actually makes it look like it's all made out of the same material, much like might be the case with claymation, adding to the illusion.
Nice idea though, looks great!
