Well i started painting and it's pretty tough! i'm used to painting with a brush so it's kind of hard getting used to digital paint. I'm still having a tough time creating textures, so if anyone has any tips please feel free to share! I left the line-art in there because it helps see the image better, but when i'm done i'll definitely take it out. In the mid-ground there are going to be buildings and such, but i just created their silhouttes for now. Thanks for your time, please leave any comments!

Hey everyone! I saw this challenge a couple of weeks ago and I'm really excited about it. I've been looking at everyone's stuff and all the work is really impressive. This is my first challenge and boy oh boy it sure is a challege. Well here is my first concept idea. I'm still pondering my theme and when I develop it fully I shall post it up! I shall be posting up some other sketches along with this. Any questions, comments and nasty remarks are all welcomed! :-) thanks

Hey everyone, here's another compostion I worked on. The top is the first version, the bottom is more cleaned up. I'm thinking about changing the vanishing point if I decide to go with this one, but I'm still working on other ideas. Aight, keep it real.

nice stuff although more scale would be nice. looks nothing more then a newyork suburb 200 years in the future. :)

good job so far; looks like you're off to a great start! to make youre city look more vast, you could consider adding very tiny buildings in the background...
good luck!

Hey guys, sorry i haven't posted anything up in a week, being a college student eats up lots of time!
-Slav, i agree with ya, that my sketches seem to be just 200 yrs in the future, i'm going to work on some more compositions and see what happens.

-Hillartsympho, ya with my new compositions, hopefully i can get a more "vast" feel to my city.

-thanks jarhead for the input! and thanks yall for saying stuff, because i wasn't sure if anyone saw my thread haha! well here's a concept sketch of one of my soildiers, subject to change of course:-)

howdy! here's another concept sketch i did today. I was just doddling around and playing with the brushes in photoshop. I don't use photoshop as much as i would like so i'm hoping to just build some confidence in my ability to paint with the program. thanks for checking this out! peace

Hi, just wanted to say, I love the colors that you're using for your characters. I was wondering if you had any kind of story that went with the scene you're doing? My tip on making your city feel more dense, is having a really low horizon line and taller buildings... Lookin good so far though!

Great stuff, espessially the portrait. One word of advice about photoshop -
crank up the opacity, get to know the program`s limits and how you can fit in
them. Don`t worry about messing up, you`ve got the history panel to help you,
the smudge tool, the history brush and so on :]

Hey thanks for the comments starzchica23 and ganthu. Ganthu thanks for the tips, ill keep them in mind as i work in photoshop. Well Starzchica23, the story i'm working on goes a little something like this...

There is a same race of humans living on the same land, but they are divided into two groups, an upper and lower class. The upper class has all the technological advancements, while the lower class has the old technology, because of this the upperclass suppresses and segregates the lower class. In my image i want to portray a Space Alien group that is attacking the humans. The upperclass is running into their heavily fortified city, while the lowerclass is stuck to defend themselves in their city. I'm thinking of literally depicting the upperclass living off an elevated bridge, while the lowerclass has their little city below it.

Well that's what i've got so far, it's the first idea i thought of that intrigued me. I'll rewrite and develop it more sometime to make it more interesting to read. If anyone has any questions or comments that'd be great! thanks!

Hey this is a sketch of my environment. I'm going to extend the space on the upper left hand corner and the bottom of the pic. I'm going to have spaceships flying from the upper left hang corner attacking soildiers and pedestrians. I'm probably of going with a theme of how wars affects civilians. I'm also still working on the designs of my buildings and will hopefully have a solid design before i work on my line art.

Your last sketch of the envoronment is really good! It's clean and we van feel the perspective with the contrast of your lines. Your point of view is interesting too, with the diagonal axe. It's more dynamic. Keep up the good job!:)

i was working on cleaning this composition up but i wasn't happy with it. it wasn't galactic enough so i worked on another composition, which i shall post up after this one. And sorry for having my alien and soildier pics so big, at the timei didn't know how how to fix the pixels to decrease their sizes! :-)

This is just some characters i was working on. the left soldier would be a light infantry and the middle would be a heavy artillery unit. the last is a alien space jet, might try to make it more organic though.

Since i haven't posted anything up in a while, i figured i'd post a lot in one day:-) this is another sketch, which i'm actually kind of happy with. i think i'm going to start on the line art for it and hopefully be satisfied since we just got over a month left! i'm still moving things around, like the space jet, i might have it to the right a bit more. on the upper right hand corner i'm going to have a big ship, but i haven't designed it yet so i just drew circles:-) Thanks for viewing.

Nice composition. Could be very dramatic, especially if the ship's vapor trail was curving around behind the column.

Hey everyone this is a cleanup of my composition. Please leave any of your thoughts, questions or comments on it. Can't believe the deadline is approaching! I've got to start painting this badboy or else i'll never finish! Goodluck all!

What's up John? I glad to see your work on cg talk. I really like the composition of the landscape and the angle is really dynamic. I hope to see more soon. Good luck!!

I really like the design for the setting. The tilted angle works quite well. Is that smoke and dust down between the buildings about mid pic? nice work so far.

Great progress! I love the angel, and the everall eye movement that one would follow throughout the composition. I am interested to see what the colouring stage will look like when you start :)

Anime_J, after looking at your drawing, I have one small crit that keeps nagging at me. The ship to the upper right above the tower is looking like it's attached to it, maybe if you try moving it in and down, up and over- play with that a litttle to get rid of the tangencies and add some more depth...

Just my opinion... looks very cool though, very original structures and ship design.

Keep rockin with this one, I'm sure the final will be smokin!!

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the comments and crit, i was getting kinda worried no one noticed my stuff! haha

Well Shin, in the mid ground i'm going put some buildings and streets there, since it's far in the distance i think that when i'm painting i'll just suggest the shapes, but yes i'll prob have some smoke from little explosions and such. I'm going to paint in more "jets" attacking the whole city.

Cameron, as far as the color scheme, i'm thinking of going for the effect of... "this city was once a beautiful place, before the war started." So i'm thinking of using some warm colors, such as yellow and orange, but they will be tainted with browns and greys to show a bit of wear and tear. If you have any other colors in mind feel free to share! Your right about the ship in the upper right hand corner, i'm hoping that when i paint it, I'll be able to seperate it from the tower/column by my use of color. But i shall definitely play with the idea of moving it, so far i'm thinking i can move it either all the way to the upper right hand corner or further into the distance... i might even have more ships of it's kind, in the distance. Once again thanks guys, I really appreciate it.

Hey, John, I really like the colors you are going with. The time of the day also adds a lot to the atmosphere of the piece. I think that you should mess around with some of the filters in Photoshop for some textures there is a lot of options to play with. Keep up the good work.
