View Full Version : Creature: Dragon (WIP)
Two-Headed Coin 11-06-2004, 08:02 AM Hi everyone,
This is my first thread on CGTalk! I'm working on a dragon but I want to give it feathered wings. I am wondering if anyone knows of a tutorial on how to make the wings with the intent of animating them. I have a vague idea of creating a series of nurb planes and then mapping them with colour and transparency maps. A tutorial on this would really help me to get started, or if anyone can explain it to me really clearly? :)
Below, are some pictures of the current geometry. I have a lot of cleanup to do as well as to add front feet... I'd love to get some feedback. Thanks!

Hey, I fixed the link. It figures that I'd screw up the first post!
Looks really good (from this distance); maybe you could post a little close up from the face :)
Not much comments now, just one thing (that really isn't a big deal): maybe you could make the back of the dragon a bit 'bigger' (heavier) becouse now it looks like the dragon is going to fall over. Maybe this will look a lot different when you finish the the front legs, or maybe it's becouse of the perspective (you really should post more pictures :D), an other thing you can do to make the back of the dragon look more 'stabel' is make the tail bigger/longer
(animals always had tails to be more stabel, look at hunting dogs and cats for example; a cheeta has a verry long tail, but a rather small back body, so it can walk real fast, and make sharp turns without falling. Some big animals (e.g. a rothweiller (you know, those big dogs with their sharp theet)) have (due evolution) almost no tail left, becouse there's no more need fore them - an other example is the human)

Cool looking dragon, i espescially like the head. l0de's comments are very valid... The overal shape is good but it needs to be more refiner to give it it a more plausible, natural look.
The tail should be considerably longer to be functional for balancing and steering and also to keep the dragon in proportion with the wings(perhaps consider some sort of tail feather or fin at the very tip that can be spread or retracted)
Also, make the wing bones a lot thinner, they're way to big and heavy... Take some references from a bat's wings, they need to be as light as possible because the entire wing structure will have to be carried and moved by the shoulder muscles and right now thgey're just too heavy and clumsy looking.
Is it just me, or do the front legs also look a bit too short and stout maybe?
Keep at it, i'm curious to see this progressing

Thanks l0de and MadMeph! I'm working on the dragon and will post some pics tomorrow.
l0de: Thanks for all the comments! I will have more pics tomorrow that'll be closer up.
MadMeph: Yeah, the front legs are a little stout in the image. I need to fix them and add feet to them. I will make the tail longer also. I will shrink down the wing bones too. Do you know about any tutorials on feathers? I know that bat-type wings would be easier... but I want to experiment! :)
More soon!

The model looks fine. But more views & closeups are needed to do any serious comments.
Oh, I alsow googled for a feather tutorial for you, and found one, but forget to post it yesterday :wip:
Anyways, it was still standing open on my browser, so I'll give it now (better late than never as they say) ;)
click (http://www.lmvstudio.com/featherstut/hair_tut.htm)
It uses shag/fur.
I don't think the endresult is that great, but maybe with some tweaking you can make it look better.
Anyways, good luck, and still waiting for those close-ups/test renders :)

Here're some closer shots of the dragon so far. I tried to thicken up the tail and the area between the dragon's back legs to give it more stability. The dragon is a D&D dragon and has smaller hind legs than front legs. I think that the front legs are meant to be pretty muscular to hold him up. I need to improve the feet on the back legs and add claws... I also need to add feet on the front legs. I'll get to it soon! Also, I'm going to delete the frill around his cheeks and remodel it, I don't like how it looks right now...

Here's some progress that I've made so far. I removed the fringe around the dragon's face and went for spikes instead. I will dabble with those some more still. I also worked on the front feet... back feet need help still. I need to work on overall muscle definition too. It may end up with membranes for wings after all DAZZAN. :)
Thanks for the tutorial l0de, I'm looking into it... I'm using Maya though. Has anyone done wings with feathers before?

Yeah, looks really great, the wire looks really clean to.
If I were modelling it (in my dreams :D ) I'll ad some more edge(loop)s in the face to make it look a lit sharper, especially round the horns and the cheeks.
The overall structure of the body looks perfect now ('though it seems hard to me such a huge beast can stand on his front toes ;)), another things about the toes: the 'height-difference' (sorry, don't know how I put it in English - hope you 'll understand it though ;)) seems a bit to big I think.
Ceep it up!
THC- Great dragon, simply awesome. I think feathers might work, but you might want to accent them with a head plume or something. If you do go with feathers I'd recommend paintFX, there are many hair tutorial out there that should work for this too. Also 3DBuzz.com had a good tutorial on rigging wings awhile back. Used it on a test rig myself and was happy with the motion and folding I got (I used membranes though).
Can't wait to see the final.
