hello guys, i was wondering if it is possible to go back and forth from the base poly mesh to the subdivided mesh in maya. im really new to maya and im trying to use my habits from max. i know in max i can work on polies and then turn on the surface properties with nurms subdivision on to see what it looks like smoothed. from there i can either manipulate the low poly mesh with the smoothed results, or i can uncheck the tool to go back to my low poly model. I'm making a poly model in maya which i plan on subdividing later, but i can't seem to figure out how i can work between the low poly and subdivided mesh back and forth. i dont like the "polygon proxy mode" because i cant really see what the original mesh is, just the skeleton of it . if this makes any sense to anyone and if you have some answers, PLEASE, help me out.

The easiest way to do this (for me ...) is not to change back and forth between the poly and the subdiv but to use 'Show->Subdiv Surfaces; Polygons' and to switch that on and off. Map it to a hotkey and you're all set.
If you need the mel for that hotkey let me know.

Razvan, thanks for the suggestion! i know this sounds really stupid, but doesn't that just make the subd hidden? do you mean i should have an instance of the poly and subd it and switch back and forth using the "show" buttons? if so, i can't seem to be able to keep the copy as an instance once i subd it. i know this probably sounds retarded but would you mind breaking it down for me?

Yes it does only that, hides and shows the subdiv and if you work in poly proxy mode you will see the changes when you switch to subdiv, no funny instance tricks. This works for me because with one key stroke you can see either the poly or the subdiv and it seems to be the fastest/easiest way (no need to delete the subdiv node or to extract vertices or convert it back to polygons or whatever ...) I use this because converting back and forth from poly to subdiv creates some extra nodes (blind data etc ...) and you'll have to delete those too.

Hope it makes sense.

ahhhh, ok, i get it. thank you.:) yah, but i can't see the actual mesh, just the wire of the poly. i think i actually found a script that lets you toggle between the two, hopefully that will work.thank you again!

but i can't see the actual mesh, just the wire of the poly reasign the shader on the poly mesh, the connection gets deleted to see the underling subdiv surface.
