I'm looking at buying a 'PNY Quadro FX500' graphics card to install in a new system (P4 3GHZ, 2GB ram) and was wondering if anyone could recommend it or not. It's to be used with Maya, and also possibly XSI.

hi flapells,

I've wonderd the same thing, and everyone i've asked seems to recommend the Quadro FX 1100 because it's just a bit more expensive, and can handle things in Maya better than the FX 500, so it'll be a worthwile investment in the long run, say you're learning Maya now, but in a month or a few, you'll see that you'll need the extra benefits of the FX 1100.

but that's only what I gather, I could be wrong.

good luck.

I have an FX500 that I use with LW. I'm very happy with it.

I have both the FX500 and the FX 1100. FX500 is a good card but its not 'that' fast. It runs real well in maya but a bit weaker in comparison with other apps. It runs fine, just when you hit high poly counts, complex texture or lighting, it will slow down faster than a card like 1100. 1100 IS much faster though, especially in handling complex scenes.

Cheers for the tips, sounds like I'd better take a look at the 1100.

Consider the Quadro FX 700 too, because the core is full NV35GL chip. And it comes without a fan, so itīs pretty silent, but the clock rates are lower compared to a Quadro FX 3000, but the chip is the same. I donīt know how much you will have to invest on a Quadro FX 700, but if it is cheaper than a Quadro FX 1100 I would go for the 700.
