(i hope you mean this and not just the button in the render gloabals)
- hide or delete all lights
- create a spot light.
- create an intensity curve for the spotlight
- change the light type to a point light.
- parent the point light to your camera, so that it is centered in there.
- for the (keyframed values) in the light set the near and far clipping planes (directly in front and behind all objects, set this manually!)
- give all objects a white lambert
- render as IFF 16

A couple other methods to use one of the many depth shaders on highend or in the sdk. Or use env fog. Make sure you use some kind of 16 bit file format like Alexx said.
