Don't get me wrong, MR is totaly awesome, but for the price of $1250 per CPU
( Alias pricing ) it's not realy something we can aford for our lil 40 CPU render farm.
So I've been thinking... there must be something that fakes final gathering and
image based lighting (or at least one of them )??!!
Some kind of plugin maybe... anyone?

Thanks,
you help is appreciated!

Or buy a cut of Maya interactive which will render on both processors in a dual Xeon machine for the same price as one cut of standalone. This also makes other things faster because you don't need to export .mi files anymore because the conversion is being done on the fly on each machine.

3dgraphics is a very niche market. None of those prices are ever set in stone. I know companies that have bought 5 maya unlimited licenses and have negotiated a deal. Everything is negotiable, especially 40 render nodes. Talk to a sales rep at Alias or if you have a good reseller talk to them. Softimage sells MR render nodes for $995 and over 10 for $795 each. MR node is MR node(doesn't really matter who you get it from). Talk to both sides and see if you can play off each other for a better price.

Maya interactive? What's that? I checked Alias's site and saw nothing on it. Does this allow you to use your Renderfarm within Maya's Renderview?

best,

Greg

He is just talking about rendering with the built in mental ray inside maya instead of the standalone. You get a couple render licenses with a maya license that you can access through the render command "render -r mr". This way you don't have to generate .mi files and you can render strait from maya files.

ok, thanks for clarifying. That's how I do it. For a second there I thought there was a product I wasn't aware of.

best,

Greg
