I have now worked with maya for several months. There is a few things that I can not figure out in maya.
First thing is that you can pick an object and hide that or show it again, but you can't pick some polys and hide them
Secondly you can give an object a name, but you can't pick some polys and give them a name for fast selection later on.
Third and most important one that you can see the parameter for an object in world coordinate system but you can't see the parameter for a point in world coordinate system.
Is it me or you can't really find these functions in maya?
Any ideas how these issues could be solved will be very welcome.
TIA

i think i can help maybe.
dunno about hiding and unhiding polys sorry.
But.
for poly names you can make a Quick select set.
Create/sets/quickselectset.
then to reselect them go under.
Window/relationship editors/sets.
then whatever you named the sets they will show up there.
right click on it and click select members.
do dee doo.
works awesome for texture projections and texturing. :)
and for point co-ordinates you can select a point.
where the channel box is under the shape node there is a
CV's (click to show) Click on that and you can type numbers in to move the cv.
thats what i know that might help you.
see you around mas

Rudity, dude you rock. I had the same question about naming polys for later texturing. This is a marvelous feature in Lightwave that I love but hated the fact that there was no easy way to do it in Maya that I could find.

Now if some one could explain why I have such a hard time using dual monitors with Maya like I can in Lightwave I'd be a really happy camper.

To hide and unhide individual poly's go into face selection mode and choose the faces you want visible. Then in the viewport go to show>isolate select>view selected. Only the face's selected should be visible and then u can go into vertex or edge editing from there. I had the exact same question a few weeks ago myself :p

Thank you Houkah and Rudity
for replying to my question.
It helped a lot.

Rudity the word coordinate system problem will not be solved by clicking to show the cv's. It will show a value of 0,0 which seems not to be correct.
Every point on a sphere is in a different place, but in cv it show a 0,0,0 position unless you move it

Mas, really wht it is doing is basing the 0,0 coordinates on its starting point. The numbers won't change, like you said, until you move them. Since everything has a construction history, unless you freeze transformations, it takes the average of all cvs from dead center (0,0,0 Local). I might be able to help you more if I knew what you needed the initial numbers for. There is usually four or five different ways to do something in MAYA, and I might know another way.

Hi dmcgrath

I'm working with this image, and I have a problem to move the points at the border with my mouse. I need to know the exact position of every point to align them together on world coordinate system. Have you any idea how to work this out?

well you could use the snap to grid option...just select all your edge CV's and then choose the snap to grid...but if you middle click...all CV's will snap to one point...you will want to just snap it on ONE axis...you do this by selecting the arrow...instead of the middle box...and they will all snap to that grid...just be in an ortho view...like front view...ect...it works the easiest that way...

wow...after all that...I sure hope I answered your question...

hm, not sure about the problem, and maybe I'm wrong, but why don't you use the snap to point tool? or the merge vertices tool with high settings

You could also use a cluster deformer to quickly select groups of sub-objects.

If all you want to do is select the edge cv's and align them to the x-axis, you can do that rather easily. Double click on the move tool to open the settings pop up window. Make sure you are in the World move mode. Then select the cv's you want and hold down the X key. this will snap them along an axis (when you grab the appropriate handle) x,y, or z. If you want to snap one cv to another cv's location (or a group of cv's to one point) hold down the V key, that is the point snap, You can also snap to curves. There are buttons at the top right area to turn these on and off, but I like to use the hotkeys (X_C_V). I hope that helps.
