View Full Version : pci-e M/B's can use old AGP?
jcbray 11-04-2004, 04:29 AM I'm just checking some advice i got before I follow through and buy a new graphics card. I was told that a pci-e motherboard would run the older AGP graphics cards - is this right or is the connection different or something?? That was all, thanks people!

No, it wont, unless its got an AGP slot on the board.. too.

Hmmm, perhaps he misunderstood me when I asked then. Thanks for the reply, I'll clarify that before long with the shop.

He probably meant what lots kinda said: it is possible (and quite a few do) for a motherboard to have both a PCI-E and AGP slot (though they cannot be used at the same time).
Here (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-135-157&depa=0) is a link for one such motherboard.
Really.. you only see the AGP slot on PCIe boards in some.. very strange cases, for the most part AGP is left off. The AGP slot on this board is actually a PCI slot with an AGP connector. Hence, ECS calling it "AGP-Express." Meaning 133MB/s at 33MHz. How'd they pull it off? They stuck the equivilent of 2 PCI slots into one, to meet the power requirements and slapped the AGP connector on top. Only a few AGP cards work in this slot. Why not use a full blown AGP slot? Simple. They can't. The chipset does not support AGP. So, ECS devised a way to convert a PCI to AGP. There is a huge performance hit, not to mention that you will not get alot of the features found in AGP. Direct access to system memory for example.
