Title: Photorealistic Scene
Name: Shane Purcell
Country: United States
Software: 3ds max, Photoshop, VRay

My attempt at a simple but realistic scene. Created in 3dsmax 6 and rendered in Vray. If you have those, head to 3dsmax section and you can download a simple example. Some minor post work in photoshop.

Nice, but Nestle is a multinational corperation with no ethics. Of course, if the recent events in the world are anything to go by, that shouldn't really bother anyone. Human rights are so passe...

what do world politics have to do with a rendering exercise? please try to comment on the work only, not the socio-political background of Nestle.

as far as photorealism, this is one of the most photoreal i have seen. however, it doesn't take a step in the direction of aesthetically pleasing. it looks real, but it looks like something i'd just walk by in real life. doesn't look like something worth taking a picture of. perhaps if you added some color to it, maybe some contrast, to add some compositional interest to it?

i actually quite like the 'normal-ness' of it all. its quite effortless to look at without visually investigating Pythagoras' divisions.

i have a crit tho. i feel the forced perspective and DOF blurs the image and the image loses some value.

Dear Wedge,

I guess Spike is quite right to criticize the content of the image, too. I wonder how anybody would feel like if this would be a forum on poetry and somebody would post a verse which is full of hatred and aggression against a certain group of the community. Anybody who would only comment on the beautiful measure of the verse would be to me absent-minded. You can't seperate the content from the visual surface of an image. And as designers we should care how we influence the world around us be creating images.

Cheers
Thomas

I disagree with spike and pancho, this is purely a cg forum, and the content is irrelevant. What is even worse is that both of you took the time to comment, yet didn't mention a single thing to do with the image. I might remind you of points 3 and 4 of the posting guidelines:

Don't dilute the forums with irrelevant and unnecessary fluff. CGTalk is a professional, moderated forum. It's a place to talk about all things related to computer graphics.
Critiques and responses to images are to be constructive and related to improving the quality of the artwork.

That aside, I definitely think the image is close to photo-real quality, if shown to someone unawares, I think this would be accepted as a photo. The dof is very well done, and I was going to say that the reflection of the upright bottle was too great, but after examining plastic bottles, I think it's just right.

My main criticism is the opaqueness of the upright bottle, just below the cap. Is it supposed to have condensation formed there? It just seems not quite transparent enough.

Wonderful render, keep up the good work

hehe, glad I could stir things up a bit. Heres a wireframe:

thanks for the replies. I tried a version (never saved it) without DOF but frankly didn't think it looked all that real. I think most camera shooting something this close would have at least a little DOF in there. The render took over 20 hours, as I was using 3d DOF and frankly accidently overdid the settings for AA.

WOW! Great work! Indeed awesomely photoreal! I know it's quite hard to simulate such 'transparant' plastic, but you've done it GREAT! Congrats with it! :) [I'll download that scene in some time :) ]

Greetz & Good luck for getting frontpage  , Gijs

this is an exercise in photorealism and rendering, not a political statement. i am fully aware that art, including computer art, can hold meaning, but i'm fairly certain that this, a rendering exercise, doesn't contain any.

this is kind of an afterthought percdydaman, but maybe add some kind of wrinkles or slight dents to the label? you don't often find perfectly cylindrical labels on bottles. perhaps you could do it with bump mapping only, since it would be very slight.

I actually did use a bump map for the paper, but I guess it was too subtle. I used a cropped version of this map:

Ill up the bump map thanks! :)
