I want to make a wall texture that looks like an egg ... texture. Program: 3DSM 6 ... How can I go about doing this? Ive tried using the speckle, dent, noise, everything that Max comes with ... with no luck. :( I want the texture to look nice for my midterm ... but alas ... I bite! So ... please help me! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif Thanks!!!

I managed to get a pretty decent egg texture with just using noise for bump mapping. I left it on the default gray diffuse color, set the specular to pure white, and increased the specular level a little bit. After that, you just need to mess with the noise. Tone down the size (I went with 1.5), and then play around with the high and low levels to lower the density of the black dots in your noise map.
Be sure to add some kind of lighting solution to the scene though. I just created an omni light with all of the defaults, and placed it close to my wall, towards the top. This makes the bumps from your noise map show up better.
As an alternative to the bump mapping. You could try using the same noise map for displacement mapping with Mental Ray. Swap the black and white colors on your noise map and set it in the displacement slot, then tone the displacement value waaay down. 1 or 2.
I got better results out of the bump mapping personally... You might have to experiment with the placement of your light to get it to look right though.
Somehow, I'm sure someone else will have a solution that completely blows mine away. ;)

Me post a pic? Uhhh ... well, there isnt anything to look at yet. I mean ... I have a room but, the teacher made it so ... I dont want to take credit for it. :) We are suppose to texture the room and add furniture. When I get furniture in it ... Ill show it tho ... without taking credit for the room modeling. :P
