An experiment with food ...

I'm not so sure about the texture that we see beneath the cup. Make it less pointy and more "wavy" i think. Overall make it look smoother. I like the whip creame tho:) .

Good job

Many thanks, I'll take a look at that.

I was suprised I got a reply considering the subject isn't the usual Star Wars/Trek, naked chick, monster, blockbuster rip-off, car, military etc. :)

It's definately a good start. Like Carrier said, the layers in the glass are too pointy. The texture there should be in the inside of the glass, so you can see clear glass on the very edges. The whipped cream is modeled nicely, but the material needs a little work--it needs a little SSS (or at least a fake of some sort). Same goes for the cherry.

Although, that whole top is wonderfully stylized. Goes well with the saucer, spoon, and bottom of the glass. I would actually suggest that you actually model the contents of the glass create materials in the same style. Also, please, please model the tile texture, that low-res bump map is really distracting.

Many thanks Tahi'eN for your contructive comments. I'll deconstruct what I have and explore your suggestions. I agree about the tiles. On reflection, I think that the low-res bump map is better suited to mid/far distant shots for floors. I did a 360 degree animation and didn't like the tiles at all. Modelling is definately the way to go.

Back soon ...

Another head-scratch and another shot ...

The tiles are a big improvement. Their bump is set a little high now, though. The chocolate inside looks nice, but the ice cream is looking like Dippin Dots--it's waay too rough. What's it look like if the icea cream itself is basically just smooth?

I took a stream iron to it :)

A definate improvement. Only thing that's still bugging me about it is that the part of the glass that holds the ice cream isn't thick enough.

Yeah, I know where you're coming from. I've spent much time examining the model and as you can see from the glass only pic the material is pretty thick, so I guess the contents somehow reflect and 'bleed' into the glass, making the edges blur/disappear. Although the contents polys do not interfere with the glass polys at all. But that's why I'm here in the WIP section, looking for suggestions ino rder to improve. If it goes right first time that's great. But you don't really learn anything do you?

Any more suggestions most welcome.

Wow, that is nice and thick, isn't it? Looks like your index of refraction is a bit too high, though. That chocolate shouldn't be warping quite that much if it's just being seen through glass.

That chocolate shouldn't be warping quite that much if it's just being seen through glass.Actually I found that a lower refractive index for the glass gives the illusion that the content is not filling the cavity completely. The whole key to the problem, from much experimentation today, is that the balance of refactive indices between the glass and air portions controls the perceived thickness of the glass, rather than the actual physical thickness of the model. Seems illogical I know, but then 3D is all about illusion. It's the end result that counts. Not how you went about it. One of the principles of magic.

Each day I learn something new :) which is what makes life fun!
