View Full Version : NAME NAMES; Who are the top LW artists?
RobertoOrtiz 11-03-2004, 02:03 PM I been meaning to do this for a while.
Tell me, who are right now, in your opinion, the top LW artists?
For me the only requirement is that they use LW on at least one aspect
of production. And if you can, post a link to samples of their work.
Looking forward to see the names, and who knows, I might write profiles of them.

- Taron, i guess i dont need to speak much about him :D
- Todd Grimes

To me one of the best cartoon 3D modelers, if someone can take a cartoon drawing and make it a perfect 3d model with the same "feel", strenght and character as the hand drawn one, this is the man :buttrock:
Im sure im forgeting amounts of names, but this are the ones that pop right out of my mind.

Proton (William Vaughan) - http://www.spinquad.com/forums/
Along with Todd Grimes, already mentioned, these are my favorite Lightwave artists. Speaking of Todd Grimes, what has he been doing lately?

I think that this thread does a lot of people an injustice. There is many artists, that do not appear in public that often, but that do awesome stunning work with LW.
I had the honor to meet some of them in LA in summer. They work at Digital Domain, EdenFX, Area51, Zoic, CafeFX, Pixelmagic, Flash Film Works, Warner Brothers Animation and many other studios (there are to many to mention them all here, sorry).
You would not believe the passion and efforts these people put into their work every day. The downside is, that they rarely appear in public because of their work taking most of their time.

I couldn't agree more. Some of these studios are pushing out some absolutely incredible work, and yet we don't hear individual names because they're team efforts, and because most of the artists don't have time (or the inclination) to promote themselves individually.
I had the enormous pleasure of spending some time at one of those above mentioned studios last week (I won't say which one), and all I can say is that the artists there were doing absolutely amazing stuff. I felt humbled and honoured to be around them.
On a side note, I don't think Taron is using LightWave anymore.

I second that. The ripper's work are an awesome! He's my favourite LW artist and also master of LW!
And also my another favourite artists :-
Olivier van Tilborgh (The Black Tulip),
Timur Baysal (Taron),
Gerald Abraham (L akira)
Michael Blackbourn (Mike RB)
Jonny Gorden (Kretin)

Hey Leigh!
Taron now works for Project Messiah, but he is still using LW, mostly for modeling. I had the pleasure to meet him in LA (we both spent a lot of time out of the conference- center, smoking ;-) ). He also did a wonderful demonstration of LWs character- modeling- capabilities at this years Siggraph...
He is a great character and has always been a very inspiring artist for me...

I agree with Leigh and Elmar... I can't actually say this one or this one is the best because they are all at a comparable level.
If this question was asked last month, I should have given a list different from today. Because I was more sensitive to X or Y's work...
Moreover, styles are so different. We all know how quickly some people may jump from one style to any other (e.g. from cartoon to hyper realistic and so on).
Nevertheless, I have to agree with all the people giving lists. I will do the same a bit more exaustic.
Kretin (for all), proton (for all), taron (for all), tim albee (for all), policarpo (for rendering & experimentation), pisong (for his twisted mind), leigh (for textures & rendering), xtrm3D (for all), facial_deluxe (for all), julos (for all), mikeRB (for all), mike_pauza (for dynamics), fender (for all), howardM (for dynamics), remi (for modelling), T4D (for rigging), sebek27, Lukas Paszera (pfiuuu the list gets long), chagidiel, LFGabel, Randy Sharp, RPG2003, Steve Worley, Steve Hurley, JUANJGON................. Crap, I have forgotten names and nicks....... And the list keeps on...
In fact this list are names that popped to my mind... Not a ranking at all.
Elmar, Digitaldeuce, julez4001, bytehawk, aurora, sam kvaalen....
I STOP !!!

Jose Perez, hands down probably one of the best Hardware guys I know. Basically just about all the best LW models that have come out of Zoic or Foundation I, and a few outher companies, you all know his work even if you don't know his name. Hardest working man I know as well.

someone named me and I have to say I have to bow out,
when u say top artist, I tend to see those guys's work as unnapproachable yet
the standard in which we all inspire and thats definitely not me. Anyone can achieve my work and surpass it with ease.
Maybe we should say the Top Ten guys so we just not throwing names out.

As a lightwave nobody, I find this quite futile, as art is so subjective, there are far too many LW'ers to list, well beyond the well banded names seen here already. I'm not meaning to be off, just saying that there are too many to sensibly be listed ad done justice too :)
Cheers!
