Hello everyone...

I'm having trouble with render passes in Maya. It seems that an object can only be in one layer at a time - so, that means if I want a shadow pass AND a beauty pass, I need two separate scenes? The whole point of rendering in layers I thought was to send your scene to your farm and it comes back with whole bunch of sequences - colour, spec, shadow etc. Yet it seems Maya will only allow you to render one pass at a time.

I have around 80 scenes to render, all of which need to be split up for comping.

Sorry if I am missing something - I am new to Maya, coming from XSI...

Cheers

Check your Render Globals.

In my render globals (Mentalray)

Enable render layers - on
Enable render layer passes - on

beauty and shadow passes are set to Renderable ON and the respective channel set to ON.

Still, only one renders anything- ie my beauty pass is empty when rendered (black) but the shadow pass works fine. This I assume is because the object can only ever be in one layer at a time?

Thanks for any help on this

like you describe you want to render your complete scene in passes right`?

so in the end you want to have a color, shadow, spec pass and then later comp that?

in that case just go to the renderglobals and activate the "global passes".
then maya renders the passes you activate below (usually you check all but beauty, since the others let you create the beauty pass in comp).

hope that helps

cheers
