Title: Built Form
Name: Ali Shakarchi
Country: Canada
Software: AutoCAD, HDR Shop, Maya, mental ray, Photoshop
This rendering is part of a work that I am doing for a client. I wasn't looking for realism here, but to create an impression of a form that is not built yet.
I've used mRay as a renderer, image based lighting, yet it is not exactly the sky in background. I hate faking it but I think it is pretty close. Critique is most welcome!

Looks fairly realistic to me. Although, this type of structure form has been built many times before. As a matter of fact, I seen quite a lot of these in Atlanta, GA. The very last two floors could have been utilized much better in my opinion. I would get rid of the partition between the windows and etc. and create a penthouse suite with floor-to-ceiling windows. A terrace that mimics the curved shape at the top of the building would be a plus for the penthouse suite.
You've done a good job with the sky except the bottom right corner. The overall mood of the picture is suggestive of a sea-side luxury apartment, just like the ones in Miami - South Beach. So why don't you create some kind of water front that is not visible to us but would reflect the light towards the structure to achieve a dramatic lighting effect. Just a suggestion!
Keep it up! It looks promising.

Thanks for the remarks. I agree with your design comments, and I wish I am the designer of this structure. It is truly remarkable how the architecture of our time has been commercialized in such a way that it's been superimposed onto society and culture as a commodity that could fit anywhere in any place, just like a piece of furniture.
This has been the CG challenge for me to produce an image of a structure that resonate the mood of the surrounding environment.
May be you are right about the suggestive sea side impression, I am a Vancouverite.
Sorry about the animation, I don't know where this came from, I am not ready to post it yet!!
