Andrei Fierbinteanu has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Latest Update: Lighting: better background

I realised that it's a black hole, and it shouldn't glow (silly me). I also made it "bend" light around it.

This is my first major project and I decided to enter because I love the ideea of the challenge, and because I want to learn more about CG from everybody here at CGNetwork. This first month posting will be a little slow from my part, but I hope to catch up in the winter holidays.

Here's my story:
<<Mankind has evolved a lot, developed new propulsion systems, and colonised the entire solar system, but since warpspeeds are not reachable by their technology yet, the humans weren't able to go beyond it.
One grim day, named afterwards, "First of the last days", something out of the ordinary happened. The sun's matter began to be attracted toward a point aproximately 50 million kilometers away from it. The United States Of Terra gouverment spent millions of credits on investigating this unknown phenomena. One year later the first acceptable hypothetis was formulated. Before this moment humans thought that black holes were just points of immense gravity, but they were wrong. Black holes are actually of semi-organic nature. The smallest unit of the black hole, named an "entity", is similar in function to a cell. Millions of "entities" link together to form the Black Hole, which, much lika a parasite, travels from system to system, absorbing every single molecule. The matter is then transformed into energy, which is then used for an unknown form of propulsion. Faced with this threat Mankind has only one chance: destroy this matter-eating creature to ensure our survival.>>

This is my background story. I'm awaiting critique and suggestions, and I'll post some concepts soon. Oh, and be gentle please! ;)

This is the entity concept. I went for the piramidal shape. Each face has an absorbtion hole through which it sucks up matter at a molecular level (it uses a shockwave to decompose the matter and a gravitational pull to draw it in the hole - the entity is imune to it's own gravity field). in the center we have the transformation part, where matter is transformed into energy. The energy is then pushed through the propulsion holes for movement.

Hope to hear some suggestions/critique soon! It took me some time to post the concepts (no scanner), but here they are!

This is the human fighter concept. It's unmaned since it creates immense G-force (not the video card ;) ), and no human would withstand piloting it. it has four lasers (which only stun the entities) and an anti-matter gun (which is able to destroy them but takes a lot to charge). It uses a magnetic field for movement (more on this lower), and solar panels for energy (for the weapons and propulsion system).

This is a frigate. Unlike the fighter it has a crew (I haven't decided yet how many people and I may also change the scale). It also has 10 fighters in it's launch bay in case some entities are in a position that the frigate can't fire upon. The same propulsion system, and I added a shield genrator.

The humans have developed a propulsion system based on a magnetic field (similar to the ones used by trains but a lot more advanced). The Earth and the other colonised planets have huge magnetic field generators that create a field around it. Any ship that has a navigation ball (like the ones in the center of the fighter and frigate) can go anywhere inside the field, by tuning in on the frequency (the use of a specific frequency prevents interference). Theoretically they can have an infinte acceleration, but practically they have a limit (a very high one). Super capital ships and colonisation ships also have a space fuel system (similar to the one used today), but the fuel is very compressed so it doesn't take that much space. This allows them to exit the magnetic field, for travel between the different planets. They also have their own mini-field-generator, so that an escort of magnetic ships can follow them. The field doesn't affect the emmiting ship (You can't grab yourself by the neck and pull yourself of the ground, can you? Same thing here).

Hope to hear from you soon, now that you have something to see.

Very thought-provoking concept. I'm looking forward to seeing more elaboration about the "matter eating entity" (MEE) ! Did you ever read Black Holes and Warped Spacetime by William J. Kaufmann (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-url/index=books&field-author=Kaufmann%2C%252520William%252520J./103-5841183-0470259) ? There are some elements in those theories that will open up some more doors to you about what some of the "affects" might look like surrounding this terrible beasty. Can't wait to see more. May I suggest you really focus on the "MEE" presenting it as though it were the star opera singer whom everyone has been waiting for, but when they see it - it shocks them like the "Phantom of the Opera!" Please keep going.

Sorry, haven't read it, and I don't think I'll have time to. I'm glad you like my concept! I'm going to post more concepts and more on the story soon (I hope :) )!

I modeled the entity. Here are two stages of the modeling process: the outer part and the full model.

Here is the textured entity. The camera angle is a little weird. I'll post another one from the same angle as the modeling one. I'm going for a jelly like look, but it didn't come out quite well. Any suggestions are welcome. But I want to keep it transparent and refracting.

I decided to start working on the models, but I still have some concepts to post. Also, on the story: The humans have started building a giant orbital antimatter cannon, since antimatter is the only thing that can hurt the entities. It will have to be huge to be able to destroy the mother entity (the big one that is still near the sun) from Earth orbit. The human top priority now is to protect the cannon until it's finished.
I've decided how the final image will look and I'll post a layout concept very soon.

Unfortunatelly I haven't been able to work at all. Since the semester is almost over we have a lot of tests, and I also have a drivers licence exam, so I had to forget about working for now. I hope to come back in a week with some concepts, if not models. Wish me luck!

I retextured the entity, but I still feel something's missing.

Here is the textured fighter. Please give some tips on improving it, especially the solar panels (they're the dark purple parts in case you didn't recognise them).

I worked a little bit more on the textures and I think this will be final. I also converted the polys to subdiv, and I'll use the subdiv model for close-ups and the poly model for distant ones.

I made a background in photoshop and I plan on compositing it in the final image. This is a low res version, the hi res one has 4000X3000 pixels.

This is the final image layout. Yeah, yeah, I know it looks like crap, but it's there to give you an ideea of how the final image will look. Notice the giant cannon pointing at the mother entity (the one absorbing the sun). Oh, and there will be a lot more ships (if my comp manages to render them, that is, :) )

Fine idea to vizualize a black hole:-)
