Hopefully I can contribute something for this topic -- I'm envisioning a Mario Kart kind of scene :) . I'm back from vacation and the Red Sox have won their first World Series in 86 years, so there shouldn't be as many distractions for awhile.

Still gotta change out of my Halloween costume, tho.

waah I'm telling mummy on you Cyanid! Your cowardly surprise attack has caught me at a weak moment - I don't have my PC or wacom at the moment. Is it worth trying to defend myself on a crappy mac powerbook with one of those touchpad mouse thingummys? hrm.

In conclusion, great work mate, bloody funny :D

Hey don't let that stop you...just pick some other Avatars and pick on them...like Cyanid did with Vitriolic's Avatar! :)

cLos71: Nice one. Good mood.
Cyanid: be carefull who you pic a fight with. (hint: do not pic on girls, they are very vindictive)
Elmasfeo: Great perspective. I guess we like the same perspective.
Goro: fantastic, the memories this one brings on!

So, here is mine. 1.5 - 2 hours. Wacom/ArtRage-Painter-Photopaint. Not happy with it, but i need to sleep.

:bounce: Not that is not usually like this but, Man! everyone seemed very much into this sketch.
supervlieg — Thanks. Your reply to AHMED is hysterical.
Group question: I've always used Photoshop, and was curious about trying another painting program. Which one should I consider and why?

cLos71 - I think you'll find that lots of folks use both Open Canvas and Painter 8. There is a free 1.1 version of OC that you can download. There is also a free trial you can download for Painter 8, but it is limited. I think it either won't print or won't save or something, can't remember. But that way you can try it for free.

@Supervlieg : Thanks a ton for that WPE, it was really interesting to watch (and I love the angle you choosed for your sketch :) ) !

@all : Ain't got any time to do these daily sketches for now, but I sure am learning a lot meanwhile by just staring at your creations and the WPEs some of you post regularly (chris, supervlieg and taron come to mind as regular WPE posters, hope I'm not forgetting anyone).

Last WPE I watched was from Taron (heart of mountain). Was really interesting too as I discovered that he didn't use the watercolor tool at all (except for the sky here and there), and now I see you're using it just for blocking colors and then switch to pencil to render.

Thanks to these two WPEs, I should be able to avoid posting badly blocked sketches such as my previous sketches.

Glad to hear those wpe's are helping people. More then everything though you have to work with the technique that helps you best. Some basics like making outlines and blocking out colors work the same for most people though.

Important when using OpenCanvas is that you use the watercolor brush for blending colors, and the pencil brush for more hard colors. Since the watercolor mixes easily with the background it can be a pain getting the color you want. So use the pencil brush for this.
When you make a plain colored background, always use the watercolor brush to break up the color a bit. It makes the picture that much more interesting to look at.
Also for blending obvious strokes make a final pass at things with the watercolor brush.

I think the avatar fights lend the best work from everyone, I always get a good chuckle from most of them.

Great work from all.

I always say to myself that I'm going to get in on one of the daily sketches one of these days but I fear being stoned to death

P.S. I just had a question aswell, What are the WPE's you guys keep talking about?

robinayles
11-03-2004, 09:44 PM
Just jump on in..the best way to learn is to start entering on a daily basis.
The .wpe files are work-progression recording files from OpenCanvas. I don't really use that tool, so maybe someone who does can better explain it. But basically it records an artists steps in creating a sketch so you can playback the recording later and see how they created their sketch.

I was thinking of making something looking like the wacky races, but I can't find time for it, I sketched a few racers on a sheet of paper and at the end I only liked one: The ton. It's only a quick thing but I thought I could share it with you...

http://gaitasfritas.250free.com/sketches/mototonp.JPG

If anyone has the time I lack... hey, make the wacky races!

thanks for the comments guys, great ones today...or yesterday...whenever
I hope there will be still a few more late entries... it should be fun
