Hi,

I dont have a copy of Lightwave but need to get lws/lwo files into Maya for a test. Any free third party translator or something? Im pretty sure Maya wont import them off the bat. I know .obj has worked well in the past when ive gone from Xsi to Maya. Can anyone offer any ideas as to how i might be able to do this?

Also, anyone know what the difference is between .lws and .lwo? is it scene and object respectively?

Thanks

I haven't tried to take a .lws into maya but i've been able to succesfully take an .lwo in by converting it to .obj

UV's must be assigned to a surface in order to transfer, you don't need to assign a image file just the UV to the layer.

Morphs don't come through and i have no idea about weight maps.

I think you can also split the object into parts by using point sets (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

P.S. For converting a scene you might want to have a look at the .fbx format from Kaydara, haven't tried it but it might work.

Hi Cameo,

I don't know of any free programs, sorry. There's commercial programs like 'Anything to Anything' & 'The Beaver Project', and I'm sure there's more out there.

You guessed right - .lws is the scene file and .lwo is the object file...respectively.

Try going to flay.com and doing a plugin search for "Maya"...it should yield some usable results. Though you may not need a separate plugin...if you just need the model file and no animation or anything, an .obj export from Lightwave should work fine. Just load your file up in Modeler, and go to File>Export>Export OBJ.

If you need to get animated scene data back and forth between Maya and LW, then you're likely looking at a commercial solution, such as the Beaver Project, Point Oven, or Polytrans.

One other tip...if you need to get LW endomorphs into Maya, you can load up the object in Modeler, and go to Map>Apply Morph. Apply the selected morph at 100%, and then save the file out as an .obj, which you should then be able to use as a blendshape in Maya.

*edit* didn't see the part in your original post which said you don't have a copy of LW. In that case, you might want to check out Deep Exploration (http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/). It's not free ($149), but it's a handy tool to have in the arsenal as you never know when conversion situations like this might pop up. :)
