View Full Version : Rotation and angled object problem.

Ok I have a steering wheel that was created in a top view, I then rotated it to an angle where it aligned with a side view shot of a vehicle. Problem is rotating it, it now rotates like a wobbling plate. I tried changing the axis order- euler, didn't fix it....probably an error on my behalf as I haven't done anything with this before. Any tips for creating proper rotations on objects that are not level to the ground plane? I should mention when I rotate it for the keyframes, it looks like it is doing what I expect, as soon as I allow it to play the animation it looks out of kilter.
Thanks for any help!

Can you rotate it locally?

Hey Dave, when I set it to local, it looks correct in the viewport as I change the rotation value or rotate the gizmo, but when I play the segment it wobbles.

Oops. Just noticed that you are using Euler. TCB rotational controller does'nt do the trick?

Also, if you change the Euler order to ZXY, it should work ok.

I am going to read up on that right now, never used this stuff before, am I on the right track with euler?

TCB did it, thanks Dave! Cheers!!!

Hey man, just for what it's worth, I'd go with Euler. TCB will do it, but you will probably find it wierd to animate for that particular usage. With Euler, you should be able to change the axis order in the drop-down box inside the euler controller paramters. It will work, and it's probably prefered.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Hey Dave, just tried euler, couldn't get it to work properly :/ TCB works, but it seems I can't copy the keyframes to another object as they(rotational keys) don't show in the track editor.

I've attached an image and a file with it working. See if they help at all.

Let me know.

Thanks man I am going to check it out right now, much appreciated!

Just some links to help you better understand rotations:

Main site: http://paulneale.com

Paul has the best tutorials for understanding rotation. Here's some direct links:

First, general rotation:

http://paulneale.com/tutorials/rotations.htm

And Quaternions(TCBs):

http://paulneale.com/tutorials/QuaternionRotations.htm

And you might want to buy one of his training DVDs, as he's an amazing rigging guy. Really top drawer stuff. You can get 'em here:

I got it....again! I had to delete the old keys as just changing from tcb to euler did not work. Once I started fresh(new keys) it was a snap thanks to your example. I am going to check out the paulneale stuff, I had a bit of a time constraint today, so the simplicity of your example was very helpful ;)

Rotating objects using coordsys local will really do nothing for you when using Euler rotations. As Dave pointed out though, changing the axis order can have an effect on how it will work. The order given may not be correct depending on the orientation of the parent object. Play with the euler axis orders until you find one that does what you expect.

Another simpler solution is to align a helper to the wheel in position and rotation, link the wheel to the helper and the helper to the car. This will give you a parent that are the correct orientation for the rotation of the wheel.

Thanks Paul, I have this sorted now, but I am going to give helpers a whirl in my off time, I appreciate the info, and thanks for taking the time to respond!

Had some free time so I experimented. I tried Pen's method with the helper-- very useful and easy to set-up indeed! Next time I need to rotate something I will have that in my arsenal, thanx!

Your welcome. Glad I could help. One of these days I will get a chance to clean up the tuts I did on rotations and transforms and add much needed knowledge.
