View Full Version : Bouncing Balls with Tails...
GrahamHRoss 11-01-2004, 04:27 PM Hey y'all. I was looking to practice my aniamtion skilss by aniamting some bouncing balls with tails...to work on secondary movement. I haven't tried building the rig yet, ut I know it's gotta be simple to do. Can anyone tell me a simple way to attach a tail to a sphere so I can get started? Is it as simple as parenting the two objects?
FYI, I'm using Maya, but I know how ta use Max...I'm sure whatever prog. u use the technique would be pretty universal for something like this...
Thanks!

if you are planning on hand animating the "tail" then you could just parent the root joint of the tail to the the ball but here is some problems you may incounter and what you could do instead:
if the ball is rotating, then a parent will not work because then your tail will be rotation along with it, you could just an point constrait for this.
if the ball is not rotating, then you run into a problem if the ball is going to be squashing and stretching because then tail will either look like it's not attached or is getting sucked into the ball if you can see what I am saying.. - A possible solution to fix the squash and stretch problem is to use a nurbs sphere and in component mode, select a cv and make a selection handle for that cv and then I think you can parent your tail to that so it will move with the squash and stretch, there may be other ways but I am very tired right now so I can' tthink all that well.. you could also make the nurbs sphere live and take the cv curve tool and then make a small line and then parent your tail to that line because that line will stick on that sphere no matter what it is doing.
like I said there are probably other ways, but this is what I can see right off the top of my sleepy head.
good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.
