i think i have reached the denity i would like for the amount of highrises on the city continent... there are roughly 1500 structures in here, all placed by hand. i think i may have lost my mind... hehe still less than 260,000 polys though. anyone think there is a need for even more buildings? there is still some empty space to fill actually... next comes the dome part which is the residential continent

and so begins my first challenge...

My attempt here is not so much to do a story, but to do a concept. I am going to do a scene in which i explore the wholeness of the universe (or at least our galaxy) In which all of the life forms of intelligence eventually lose their homeworld, due to a solar cataclysm, death of a homestar (a variant of a solar cataclysm i spose) whatever, fact is over time ALL intelligent species will be required to become "galacticly nomadic" if they wish to survive. My rendering will portray the "final destination" of all living things in our galaxy/universe (at least i hope it will) I hope it can be interpreted as either the final goal, or perhaps a return to our origins, that will be left to the viewer. Not being a particularly religious person, i think i am interested in the theological aspects of this as well, as the destination will be primarily seen as a temple by its visitors (all living cultures) again i hope by design to create a little ambiguity there as well, by having interesting architecture that may suggest either a secular or religious origin/final destination for us. a clearer idea of this and concept is coming soon...

A novel concept. I cannot, at this time, envision what the temple would look like. How will you portray this?

I suppose I'll have to wait and see. Grand scale... I look forward to the sketches. :)

this is a fairly rough sketch of the main destination place... its basic premise is it is centered between a binary neutron star. i am still working out a tethering system. the base draws its power from the stars (which scientifically emit HUGE amounts of radiation) i chose neutron stars because they basically last nearly forever, since they are the remains of dead stars. This gives the opportunity for those nomadic people to make a visit. i went for the double helix look in the center to hint that maybe our dna is a basic biological memory chip, thats how the originators of the station here were able to preserve themselves from total extinction. a more detailed drawing coming soon...

i figured it may help some of those like me, who aren't the best sketch artists, to show my process for getting to the drawing i posted earlier... it really started pretty simply huh? hehe

I really like the idea of 'everybody's a nomad'. Will your composition's focus be, then, on the assembly of these creatures? You may want to explore the idea of substructures around the main entity, much as a town sits around a castle, and the outlying village surrounds the walled town.

actualy what this is, is a gathering place, the final scene will be thousands of spacecraft (our species in the fore of course) who have been "drawn" to this place for whatever reason. the structure i have posted here is roughly planet (between mercury and earth i spose) sized and the things you see here will actually be cities that have been constructed into these huge shapes that are visible from a distance so i think i will have the notion of a population that you suggested as well... all in all i am going for really huge on this, it is afterall where we came from hehe

only just a slight bit more detail added to this, but it is all i need to get modelling (after all concept is only reference in 3d) i added some architectural detail and the stars are encased by collector panels, still working out a tethering system, which will probably not happen until i actually model them.

Ok bring this Space Opera to us christopher........It's quite a massive setting and premise you have planned,I like the ambition behind it.That usually goes far......I'll be wathing,best of luck,and all the best to you.......:thumbsup:

ok if you look at the concept i did earlier (the really basic stuff with just circles) the final step there has an area that is two straight strips attached to a curved strip... you may have also noted that i said the main shapes of the station were gonna be made of lots of small buildings. well those three strips are going to be replaced with the "urban" area of the station here are the basic shapes i am going to use in addition to the obligitory simple scaled cube. these will probably be replicated a good many times and scaled to create variety. they are not beveled on the edge yet nor are they smoothed but that is the next step, the next render you see will be with GI all pretty like with a Whole city if these little things

hehe i know i know...

I hit a slight snag in having to UV map these stupid buggers before i begin the mass copy of them... otherwise i would really regret life at that point... of all the #D things i love to do i despise unwrapping polys for somr reason...

here is the basic layout of the station... remember that all of the general shapes you see here will not be here when the final model is complete... they will have been replaced by a lot of detailed geometry the city continent is next to follow.

seven, eight, nine. Now i am going to fill in the gaps with basic cube primitives (perhaps a few select scattered cylinders and pyramids too... One thing id like to point out here is that even at this low resoltion, the small details in these tiny buildings to show up, so for folks like Lemog who are constantly told they model too much detail, well, it does show even if it is only half a shade difference in an anti-aliasing pixel, it does make a difference. After all, imagine if this was just cubes... it would be dull, dull, dull

In that case you're ok. People that have lost their mind don't know it.....I think. Anyway I think it's looking good! I can't believe you hand placed all that. I like the shape, it look like the symbol for Pi.

Hi Christopher....................Yes I see this one tiny spot about 300 rows up and 20 buildings to the right......I think you can fit a sardine can in there........;)

You got to love the dedicated hand placed pieces of work,patience will be rewarded with this type work ethic............I like your idea and execution,and will be watching for more....including lots of hand-placed goodness.................:arteest:

OK so after staring too long at this i have decided that i am going to add some smaller detail to the city. Heres why: the smallest buildings here are still on the range of 40-50 stories tall (inorder to create the scale i need) which makes this bigger than what i see here. Plus when i render at full resolution there will be visible gaps, i fear. So my obsession continues, and i will be filling in more little spaces.

Hmm... If there will be visible gaps at full res, the I guess it's a good idea to keep adding a few more. The overall look is pretty impressive though, and I really like the fact that you've placed them all manually. In cases like this, that kind of work actually pays off in a good way. The stylized Pi layout strikes me as really cool.

Thanks everyone who has stopped by (i dont have quite the traffic of michael, dimitris, laurent, or james) I am not drooping out of this, i am actually on another project this week with a hard deadline (and this job pays) so i have to finish it before i can get back to the contest. AH the life of a freelancer. Updates coming soon, and i will have to really endeavour to get back on track, but i WILL finish this by deadline.
