Title: Zalem City
Name: Russ Etheridge
Country: United Kingdom
Software: 3ds max, VRay
This image was inspired by the film Battle Angel Alita. It took 2 weeks to render the clouds and about 2 mins to render the city. The other way around for the production time!

thanks, i did this one quite a while ago when max 5 came out. I knew the clouds would take forever, they were rendered in max 3 using Ultrashock. I'm gonna re-do this piece with hand-painted clouds in photoshop and new and improved textures for the buildings. I really hate how the blue colour is so uniform, i think i could make it look at least 100,000 times better.

That's great. I've always wanted to make that place, but have always been sidetracked by other things. It could use some refinements but that's just me nitpicking!

Nitpick, here we go ;) Since i read all the comics anyway....
Well, the plating of the city is too big with probably a too heavy bumpmap, those grooves are way too wide and deep to give the correct sense of scale of the city.
The space elevator's mapping is a bit strange, its looks almost transparent and that swirly effect looks off. As i remember correctly from the comics, the shaft is plated like the rest of the city. I guess the transparency effect is to emulate atmospheric diffucion so the shaft disappears into the distance. It's because the diffusion turns blue too rapidly. It's got the exacts same gradient as the sky... it should first paler (ie lose colour over distance) and then finally disappear into the darness of the sky. its seems that with the current viewpoint that you have that the shaft should remain more visible since you're essentially looking down upon the city instead of looking up to it (and thus see only a relative small portion of the shaft, which stays relatively close to the camera).
The far edge of the city... i like the effect where you loose the colour on the buildings but i think they should lose some sharpness too... I'd try experimenting with a soft volume fog or light to emulate the atmospheric diffusion.
I hope this is of some help to you ;)

It was "inspired" by Gunnm not supposed to be 100% exactly the same. I didnt even know what the central shaft was for, thanks for letting me know. I very much appreciate the comments though thanks for spending the time. I'm gonna work on it more soon, i'll post the update when its done.

This was the reference, plus my memories from the film, so you must forgive me on accuracy.

ah, if you want i can scan some reference pics for you. You must envision the city like this... it's a pendulum hanging from space... what's keeping it afloat is the centrifugal forces cretaed by the spin of the earth and the counterweight of the sister city 'Jeru' on the other end of the space elevator. Those cable attached to Zalem are actually transport tubes for food and equipment. They all end in giant factories at the bases of the cables.
In the comics the existence of Jeru is only revealed at a very late stage of the series...
