jsut trying to work out where to put things in the battlefield so have to apoligise for the low res and not so great quality

the squiddy ships aren't complete yet though they are abit further along that i've shown so far anyway things are progressing - figured i will go with this idea now as i dont ahve time to change my mind yet again

ok plots storys pretty simple here, got a fleet or big ships heading towards an unsuspecting galaxy ripe for conquest. and there looking out over his fleet is the supreme overlord bent on universal domination.

this was the first concept sketch (though at the time of writing i have another one and some of the work done as my scanner wasn't working for some reason earlier)

ok here sort of the basic scene setup from the concept sketch thoguh from the next sketch you'll see where i ahve desicded to change some thigns mostly the foreground room making ti looks more solid and more futuristic

ok here how i see things going abit more - haven't quite worked out hwo to produce the galaxy effect just yet but i'll think of something i'm sure

Very epic-looking. I like the ships.

Will all the ships in the fleet be the same? A massive colony ship would look nice being escorted by the others.

ok her eth destroyer - it started out as jsut afew boxes and shapes but then i figured hmmmmm why not greeble them and kinda go with that layered effect - i like it so far we'll see how it goes when its closer to being finsihed and i worked out where everything goes etc

there will be some fighters and shuttles but the biggest ships willb e these battlecrusiers its an invasion fleet not colonisation

i might add some supply vessels etc though for abit of variation all depends how much time i have to spare - should ahve been doing some payed work today but heh master of procrastination me =) and well spaceships are always more fun than houses

hm what to say about this one, well first up galaxy curtisey of the andromeda galaxy, and astronomer and a huge telescope.

on that note does anyone know if we are allowed to use photographic background plates? as wouldn't half make my job simpler =/

done alittle more to the ships - altered the upper deck to something mroe interesting

added more detail etc

threw some lights into the scene hence my pretence for calling this a lighting shot when its more jsut a play test render

anyway enjoy - as always comments and grits welcome

I really like the detail. It could show up a little better if you added a light source on the wings to focus on the detail as the light spreads across them. Maybe a cotrast color to the blue exhaust.

just source some opinions here - guns - does it need some? i'm thinking i wanna add some but then i think no this ship is supposed to be huge - your not going to see any guns on it - but what you guys think?

very nice, very star warsish, which is a good thing imo.

If the ships are supposed to be huge then I wouldn't spend time with the guns since they will barely be seen from the distance. Now, if you use a closer view then it would be a good idea. The Star Destroyer's guns in SW are not that visible from the distance but they are when close up.

I would make my own bg, you are very talented and should try to make your own if time permits, otherwise use any suitable bg image like in your render above. jusy my opinion.

ok here's the beginings of the droid - think 4 legged R2D2 with a gun to defend its master also doubles as a holo projector

as you can see only got the legs done so far

ok droid finsihed modeling - texture this then maybe a fighter or the guy in the robes - then finish up the amin ship and heh i'll be nearly done - heh and this is only the second day i've been working on it :D

Your modeling looks great , as for your battlecruiser , I think it has to have something ,most battleships have guns of some sort . Maybe have hangers for a squadron of fighters as well.
It is looking great so far.

its not that it doesn't have guns its that they aren't visable because the ships is big so they are supposedly lost in the surface detail


think stardestroyer you dont see the guns on it - hmmmm anyway i might amke some and see if i cant work a close up of them into the scene somehow

its not a combat droid - its sort of a helper droid that can protect its owner if an attempt is made on there life - as i said R2D2 with a gun.

any sort of heavy weapon will knock it out and the main body is easier to hit anyway so if a leg gets blown off then the guy shooting at you came prepared to deal with it anyway

testing some lighting setups for the veiwing galary other - gonna go with teh groid providing most of the illumination with jsut a ncie background ambient pretty much like this pic

lighting the ships is what i'm trying to work out seems a waste to model all teh detail in if you can see it yet and realistically in space ( even mroe so in intergalactic space ) there is very little light and since the source tend to be very distant its tend to work very much like a distant light

i was begining to consider throwing a local planet - sort or making the story that the race living around this lone star as it drifted through intergalactic space watched as they drifted into the proximiaty of the galaxy and over the millenia harboured dreams of conquest to let them grow since obvioulsy they have limited room in there own system

anyway the shot woudl then be of the fleet in orbit of there world with the new galaxy firmly in there sights as the fleet sets sail

anyway this would give me an excuse to have a strong(ish) secondary light source that could be bouncing light onto the ships from another angle - basically i'll try and light them to there best advantage ( to the degree with which i can lighting is by no means a speciality of mine) then work up some visual clues as to where that lighting is coming from

added some detailing to the wing leading adn trailing edges added some supports also added some detail on the engines - opinions on that if you have any please

i'm going to build a new upper deck the shape is aquward to detail nicely so thought i would jstu build high res from teh begining this time round

also kinda edging towards putting some gun turrets on the wing tips sort of a hmmmm well easier to show than tell so will hopefully be in the next version for you gusy to give you opinions on

i actaully do have an animation of the him jumping into a the air and repositioning his feet abit afterwards - nothign much but once i got him set up i desicded ot have a little play its only about 5 secs long though

Great modeling. Your destroyer conveys perfectly the scale and function of the ship. I is also original in its design. Great job. And the droid looks cool also. I found your concept very appealing... You've gave the scena an ominous feeling so far. I like it. Maybe to increase the large scale feeling you might add some smaller starships, fighters and ferrys or whatever. Well... keep it up! I'll be checking it often. Bye.

ok here the scene without the dude or the ships - galaxy etc jsut the droid and the foreground set

sorry for the low quality but its radiosity and i cant be bothered to wait more than 10 mins for a simple test

ok bugun work on teh upper deck jsut got the from in place and not all of it at that - done the reactors though
progessing nicely

i think because it a complex model i'll have to try and jsut do a simple texture job on it as i dont have the skills to texture this properly anyway all that is still to come

ok dokey this is the fighter - highly unorigianl i know i jsut started off with teh idea of lets make a ship from a diamond and then realised that its a jedi starfighter cross colonial viper =/ but frankly this will probally barely be seen if at all since gonna be tiny next to the battle crusiers

anyway started to give it some grime and will texture it fully tomorrow (inbetween some payed work) just incase i need a close up of it

thats some insane detail you got there. If your texturing comes out as good as your modeling, this is going to be a very intracate piece of art. Keep the updates coming. Great job!

well was just doing abit of texture work on the fighter and the crusier and then trying to get a nice image out of them and i came up with this

the textures are still very much wip fear not ( yet ) but its enough to give you an idea anyway to the point after playing around and doing this i began to think on my concept - i think i might change it - getting a nice light setup in the dark of space isn't easy it either looks too dark and shadows everywhere flat or jsut that there are to many lightsources for it being in space

so i was wondering if i might switch of a planetary shot of some sort anyway we'll see

this is basically teh same as above with afew added extras - afew extra lights on the ship is about the only geometry difference though

altered the lighting abit to help give it abit more life - think it looks abit better

also due to Fprimes inability to render volumetrics or even lense flares the engine glows adn thrusts were rendered out seperatly and comped together afterwards - also used a shot with motion blur and one without and brough them together to give the impression of motion without loosing all the detail

i finished it up by makinga copy of all that increasing the contrast abit then blurring it and then dropping the opacity of the layer over the first one

oh also then desaurated it in parts with an ajustment layer and a layer mask

wow...those designs are just awesome...nice job mate...about your render i really dont like the blur...i think is too much blur...well maybe is ok but is hard to hide your great modeling behind that blur....maybe if your ships move slower,...hmm...lol dont listen to me ..i just think your work is great:thumbsup:

that last one is beautiful, I agree when you say the lighting looks better like this than in space, it would be a shame to waste all the details you've put on the ships and this lighting seems to pick them out very nicely

jsut trying to think up a new concept now struggling with this - here i was thinking some poor civilisation confronted by the arrival of humans intent on taking over this planet

ohhhhhh tahts gives me an idea

how about an prehistoric civilsation confronted with the arrival of a technolically advanced race have them cowering un there caves or mud huts etc

Perhaps your original premise would work? But just change the setting from deep space to planetside...

The Emperor standing upon a high balcony overlooking a metropolis, watching his invasion fleet set off. Maybe with a sea of troops in formation below...

only prob with doing as you say is that my ship already looks star warsy and has stardestroyeritis the fighter is very jedi starfighterish and if i do as you say thats the scene from the end of episode 2 =/

i had considered doing as you say but then teh whole thing would reek of starwars ( not that the reek of starwars is bad but not approriate for this challege) that said if i cant think of anything else to do.............

I like what you have done, dont change it :) Maybe having people standing ontop of a building looking up. They could be small to make the ship look massive. Maybe another mothership in the distance over some other buildings....just a thought.

Your work is wonderfull...I love the look and the modeling. What type of modeling are you using, sub-d or poly? And what type of lighting are you using? sorry for all the questions. Now it looks like your at the hard part, the composition. Your ship has so much detail, it would be a shame to loose it in the backgroud.

ok well what to say - the transport is jsut temp till i do somethign more interesting - might have marines jumping out of it on rapelling ropes or somethign exciting

worked abit on the textures adn surfacing of the crusier should be abit dirtier than before

and fianlly threw a load more ships in - haven't done all the engine flares etc yet though

I think you could stretch out the canvas a little more. The modelling is top notch but I think the aspect of the image kills the epic feel of it. Maybe stretch it widthwise or lengthwise and see what happens. Like I said those models are fantastic.

I agree with Gollum15, you can use motion blur but I suggest you use it on the smaller ships only because the big ones you know they don't move so much (except when dropping out of hyperspace :D ).
The colors and mood are really great !

The new concept is cool too.. It's very hard to decide which idea is better..
I think you should be very selective with the colours you choose to put on your scene, I think that the kind of scene you want to make can be really improved if you choose right the colors.

been a while since i did anything for this been busy and frankly still am but some procrastication over works leads to abit more of this done

kinda exploring ideas again droid in a desert here - jsut trying to work out how to make it fit the brief ( wrong way round i know but i'm rapidly aprroaching an impass when it comes to my composition)

anyway this one i think qualifys as a render so enjoy

ok this is a break from my original idea but i was thinking it might be cool to have basically the above with a queen in a fancy outfit digging her own grave with some soliders watching over her with guns etc - what ya think?

perhaps the smoking ruin of a city in the distance and never know might get a battle curiser in the sky overhead - though i think that might spoil take away from the focal point the queen in the middle of knowwhere digging her own grave

ok been on abit of a bender and done queeny - well not done =/ arms and hands temp as is the hair and the head needs work too =/ but they dress turned out pretty sweet

smoothed out the wrinkles abit they are jstu abit over the top looks much better now but not worth posting again - if anyone has anysuggestions for a composition as i have made a laod of stuff for this i now have this character, i have a marine that was to be jumping out of the transports, the droid, 3 ships with a 4 underway ( a varition on teh battlecrusier possibly a complete replacement ) got the elements piling up but have yet to think upa great idea what to do with them

ok here a little update to queeny - the fixed dress and hair ( dont say a word - i know i cant do hair but this is the best hair i have ever produced =/ and took me all me longer than the rest of the model well maybe not quite but almost ) anyway this is a wireframe for your disection will post a nice cel chaded one in aew mins

really struggling for a idea - always finding somethign about my ideas thats making them not work ( lighting seems to be the most tricky so i'm back trying to work out a composition and no luck yet anyway slightly different shot of the crusier

The fighters coming pretty good, I've always enjoyed starship modeling myself. Try beveling the edge a little on the nose of the fighter, It will make it look a little less polygonal. Overall it's looking good.

Isn't that Obi-Wan's fighter from EPII?

If it's not it looks very similiar... I'd suggest modifying it so that the similarities and / or potential copyright issues don't derail your work.

Still... beautiful job modeling and texturing!

yup there are similaritys between it and the jedi starfighter - also some similaritys between it and the coloninal viper from battlestar galactica - and well its maybe abit clsoe for comfort but i was aiming for a diamond shaped craft and well that kinda set all the similaritys in motions and nothing can be done about it without a total redesign adn frankly i think its just different enough to get away with it

besdies i lieke my Kunai Fighter

anyway while i am working on one final composition idea thats turning out better than the rest ( actaully almsot back to my original idea ) i probally wont finish in time so if my design smacks of a jedi fighter or not wont matter to much

I like it, I like it a lot! But I would see more ships there... perhaps in the background, so that the fact that they are the same won't be noticeable.

well the start on the other guys ship wanted somethign very different from the previous ships so i thought to myself organic design then for some reason an image of a squid appeared in my mind so i present to you the early stages of the squiddy fish ship

jsut trying to work out where to put things in the battlefield so have to apoligise for the low res and not so great quality

the squiddy ships aren't complete yet though they are abit further along that i've shown so far anyway things are progressing - figured i will go with this idea now as i dont ahve time to change my mind yet again

i was planning on finishing it up this weekend but - cleint wanted some stuff done quickly over the weekend and - my choice was between enteringa compettion is have no chance of even getting anythign expcept heras a bobby prize or a couple hundred quid well the option seemed obvious to me so nope wont have time to even render out what i have to a good quality and size

shame but nevermind i'll finish up the image later for my own collectiosn fo pieces but ahtsa bout it =/
