What is happening with my Undos? I have them set to 100 and they are being cleared too soon, and sometimes out of nowhere after one action. I'll just rotate something and then want to undo and I can't! I am running Max4.26 and just upgraded to XP Professional. If you have a solution then please let me know...

Thanks!

The same happens here. I'm interested in how can we solve this.

Have you checked your memory? You mightent have enough memory to keep the undo levels. That's just a guess....

The other thing is some things cannot be undone, like delteting certain modifiers, altering items in a stack, etc. You may not see this if you have checked the "do not ask me again" radio button in the dialog box that asks you if you want to hold the state of the scene.
If so, the levels of undo may disappear after the alteration.

And finally, some custom scripts do many low-level tasks that cannot be undone.

Hope this helps!!:D

I've experienced the same problem (4.26) as well.

Max's Undo buffer bites arse. Thats all there is.

Its doesnt undo most things you do in the material editor, and if you render it will also clear the undo buffer.

On a job not so long ago I had Max freak out and undo all the way back to when I opened the file and then it crashed and corrupted the file.

It was like it was saying to me, "NO...you cant do that, try again....Dumb arse" Sorry, Im still fuming about that.

Often I've had Max undo, but get the wrong undo and and its brought back an undo that was 10 steps ago, then tradionaly crash. I hear that Max 5 also has some serious memory leaking issues with its undo buffer, though I havent experianced anything wrong with Max 5 myself yet.

Hmmm, I dunno about undo's dissapearing when you render, never bothered me.

I do know that certain operations are prone to flush the undo's, like performing booleans. That's why I always make a copy of the object before it.
Material editors can sometimes be undo-ed, but most of the time doing something in the material editor clears all you undos.

Corrupting files is a very very very VERY bad habit of Max. Nowadays I not only save an outrageous amounts files, but I also save twice in different files, so that when Max corrupts one I always have another one at the same stage. Boy, that's sad isn't it!
Maybe it's my computer causing the instability, but none of the other programs I use seem to have that kind of problems.

Thanks for all the suggestions and responses. I have about 2Gigs of RAM. So I don't think it is the memory. I have been using MAX for 3 years now and this just started when we upgraded to XP Professional. These are not normal undo limitations in MAX, or normal undo limitations with certain scripts, cause it wasn't like this before we had XP...

Thanks,

Vic

Auto Backup group
Auto Backup saves your work periodically. In the event of a power failure, if you have not saved your work, you can load in an auto backup (autoback) file from the 3dsmax/autoback directory and continue working with little lost work.

Straight from the Manual. I must say Max may be the most unstable, but theyhave a bloody good backup system. Im always using AutoBak, though I never remember needing it because I forgot to save my work before a power failure:D

Ive been using Bobos Project Manager here for the last few contracts and I must say its a wee Jem. You can set up all your paths in max to completely different folders etc. So you can have a set of Autobaks for each job your working on. This way, if your anything like me and have autobak set to 9 and every 5 minutes, you have you last hours worth of work saved on any givin project.

Thanks to the autobak and Bobos Project manager, I havent lost more than 10 minutes worth of work for many years.
